Pampered by My Ex's Cousin-Chapter 154 - 147: Unrequited Love is the Honey of Youth (Part Nine)
Unlike before, when she panicked at the sight of Ji Ruoqian crying, fearing punishment, now she seemed habituated or perhaps just weary.
Maybe she was tired, and she wanted to discard the burdens.
Her foot throbbed so painfully that even her breathing shuddered, sweat drenching her, every hair on her body standing on end.
Ji Ruoqian cried and ran out, leaving silence behind for a long while.
Ji Anning wanted to go downstairs to shut the door but was helpless to move.
She closed her eyes, clutched the quilt tightly with both hands, bit down on her teeth, and waited for the pain to subside.
"Anning."
Suddenly, a familiar voice came from the doorway, and though they lived under the same roof, she felt as if she hadn’t heard it in a long time.
Ji Anning opened her eyes and looked toward the door to find Ji Jingfeng, dressed casually, walking in.
His handsome face showed signs of fatigue, and his eyes were bloodshot, clearly indicating a lack of good sleep.
He wouldn’t come to her room without a purpose; she guessed what it was.
She sized up Ji Jingfeng, speculating on his purpose for visiting her room, and greeted him with a small smile, "Jingfeng."
Ji Jingfeng returned the smile faintly, his steps pausing beside her bed. Glancing at the untouched meal on the nightstand, he frowned, "Why haven’t you eaten yet?"
Ji Anning shook her head gently, "I’m not hungry."
Their relationship had never been treated, resolved, or handled in the right way from the start.
It led to their interactions feeling fake, just a facade.
So Ji Anning found Ji Jingfeng’s concern ironic; they both latched on to each other’s weaknesses, maintaining a superficial veneer.
"I heard you hurt your foot, is it serious?" Ji Jingfeng’s gaze shifted back to Ji Anning’s foot.
Looking at the injured foot, Ji Anning said with an indifferent expression, "It’s like this."
Ji Jingfeng saw Anning’s injured foot and scowled, "Why didn’t you go to the hospital with such an injury?"
In severe pain, Ji Anning didn’t want to go around in circles with Ji Jingfeng any longer and asked bluntly, "Jingfeng, what is it you’ve come to see me about?"
Her tone was certain, sure that he had something to discuss with her.
Ji Jingfeng didn’t beat around the bush any longer, "Grandpa just talked to me about our marriage."
Ji Anning nodded, unsurprised, "Oh."
She guessed that was why he’d come.
"Anning, I’m sorry, Bai Guo is pregnant, and I can’t marry you," Ji Jingfeng said regretfully, his determination evident.
Ji Anning felt a secret thrill; Ji Jingfeng was unwilling to marry her, rejecting their arranged marriage.
How... wonderful!
She didn’t know why it was good; there was no hope for her feelings, much like how someone who feels life is meaningless and keeps saying they don’t want to live, yet will still desperately cling to life when on the brink of death.
At such a time, one would feel being alive is better than death, and right now, she felt being single was at least something she could think about.
Actually, the focus should be on Bai Guo’s pregnancy, but she ignored it calmly, as if it had nothing to do with her.
After pondering for a while, Ji Anning finally looked up at Ji Jingfeng and asked softly, "Does Grandpa know too?"
Traditionally, a woman’s worth came from her children, and Grandpa was eager to hold a great-grandchild, so he likely had no reason to reject Bai Guo and the child in her womb.
