Pestilence: Rise Of The Pure Undead-Chapter 560 : Drafted Legions
"Damn it… This is going to be the end for us, won't it?"
Ushered voices sometimes rose from the tight masses, all of them arranged in groups of twenty, each directed toward the same point, creating a sea of rectangular groups all preparing to march forth.
"Silence coward, we are blessed, this is but a chance to a new beginning… And the better you perform, the better that beginning will be"
"What? You seriously believe that crap?! We are nothing but cannon fodder to be thrown at the wall until one of us sticks!"
"I should return the question, I see no reason to not trust that this most holy crusade will save our souls from this prison"
"Goddamn madman…"
"First groups, begin marching!" an authoritative voice rose from somewhere, resonating within this large open space, even the fearful instantly obeyed, giving the impression that each and every one of them were entirely loyal.
'This is madness! I don't want to die!'
"Glory…"
"May I be sanctified and rebirthed into the truth…"
"My cold flesh shall fester…"
"Glory!"
"It's time for us to prove ourselves!"
'I am surrounded by lunatics! Where are the gods when you need them?! Are you bastards afraid too?!'
No matter the amount of protestations one might come up inside of their mind, he marched alongside the rest toward the green glow, resembling some sort of sphere bubbling with energy, its light felt inviting, pure and radiant, the total opposite of what was happening in this endlessly expanding room.
'I just had to end up into one of the first groups to go…' lamenting on his fate, the unknown soldier stepped into the green, finding himself in a free fall for a mere second, nearly losing his balance upon landing.
"They were right, the entry point was enclosed" spoke one the fanatics, holding out his hand as he attempted to cast a simple fire spell to light the area.
"Energy usage is blocked off?"
"No, the energy is simply behaving differently"
"Should we wait and figure it out or try to exit this place first?"
"The impure is probably already aware of our arrival, let's find a way out"
'Listen to yourself… If they are impure, then so are you!' the reluctant soldier couldn't see anything, unlike their new rulers, he had no way of seeing through absolute darkness and due to their status as glorified flesh to be minced in the gears of the enemy before launching any type of true assault, they hadn't received much equipment or tools besides what was standard.
A spear, a shield, a dagger and what they wore, that was it.
"Mmh? I think there is a gate over here!" he called out, even if he didn't agree with the point of the operation in the least unlike the rest, he was also very much reluctant to the idea of dying.
"Huh… It has been a few minutes already and still no welcoming party, sounds like a trap to me, they are probably standing ready to riddle us with projectiles behind that gate"
"The wall of this place are made of stone, there is no other way out"
"I wonder why they just didn't completely fill up this space with solid rock… Would be better than just leave us be inside of a room"
"They probably want prisoners"
"Or they are afraid that blocking off the point of entry will shift its position or something…"
"Urgh… Let's not dilly dally around, just open these gates and we'll face what's on the other side, our job is to scout ahead, not make up theories"
And as though there was only one of them with his survival instincts intact, all agreed to just push forward in spite of the clear danger in doing so.
'Those bastards are just eager to die…' using the cover of darkness to slowly and silently step away from the group, tucking himself into one of the corners flanking the gates as the others worked together to pull open the immense gate of stone, the sound of rock grinding against rocks ripping into their ears.
It didn't take too long for them to open the way, and they were only greeted by more darkness, it would appear that the gate did not lead to the outside or a firing squad.
'Oh…Is it… A labyrinth? Did the inhabitants build a maze around the way to their realm?' it seemed plausible, although, didn't that mean that they had been expecting the eventuality of livings being used to invade them? Or was it simply a cautious approach just in case the undead enemy managed to find a way to keep themselves together after entering?
'No matter… They aren't planning on allowing passage from this way back to our world, so we are stuck here… Won't we just eventually starve? We don't even have water… No way we are finding a way out before we begin to lack energy and just fall like flies…'
Pessimistic as always, he debated with himself whether to stand perfectly still to conserve as much of his ressources and hope that his undead overlords put into place a means to travel back and forth, or follow the fanatics who were dangerously comfortable with the concept of dying.
Those fools would most certainly bitterly regret submitting so willingly when it was time to actually experience death, but until then, they would be awfully bold in an attempt to please their new masters.
The mission was simple, just go and try to establish a camp of some sort, fight until you die, and that was it.
He felt rather certain that the undead could somehow know about what they were doing or collect intel from them in some manner, as these orders seemed awfully broad and almost designed to cause as many of them to die as was possible.
'Wait…'
The sole soldier with reluctance lingering in his heart stood and quickly caught up with his fellows, if what he had just thought was the case… Then staying still and doing nothing might just be the worst option available to him.
If true, then testing his chances in the labyrinth, and then hoping that the exit wouldn't just lead to instant death, was somehow his best shot at survival.
'This is messed up… I don't even know how to beg for mercy in this realm's language…' because of course, they hadn't even been granted a single medallion that could magically translate everything.
Whether it was because it wouldn't work here or because they really didn't give a single damn about them, he could not know.
All that he knew was that he wanted to live.
