Chapter 541 - 540: The Great Influence of Mismagius

After calming Phoebe, the two elders turned their gaze to Cain, nodding repeatedly.

At first glance, he seemed quite presentable.

Cain felt a bit uncomfortable, as though their gazes carried a peculiar weight.

"I just heard from Phoebe that you came here because you want your Haunter to evolve into Gengar, correct?" the old man said. Though his voice sounded aged, it was filled with vitality.

Haunter hovered beside Cain, observing the situation around them.

Haunter was well aware of Cain's purpose in bringing him here. After seeing his companions evolve one by one, Haunter felt deep envy.

Having spent so much time in Cain's shadow as his protector, Haunter had started to fall behind compared to his teammates. Even Skorupi, whom Haunter had watched grow, was now on the verge of surpassing him.

Still, Haunter had never complained, diligently fulfilling his duty to protect Cain.

Though mischievous at times during play, Haunter was always reliable when it truly mattered.

"That's correct. I wanted to ask you, esteemed elders, if you know of a place with especially abundant Ghost-type energy where Haunter could complete his evolution," Cain asked respectfully.

The elders exchanged glances, sending an odd mental wave between them.

Cain couldn't help but raise an eyebrow.

These elders were using telepathy, yet there was no psychic energy resonance in their bodies.

Could it be that their ability wasn't truly psychic power?

Still, its use didn't seem very different from psychic power.

After a few seconds, the white-haired elder stood up from his chair and said, "Young man, follow me."

Cain was taken aback.

That simple?

With cautious curiosity, Cain followed the elder into a rocky cave.

As soon as he entered, the resistance in the air grew exponentially. Cain felt as if he had returned to the space beneath the black stone pillar on the Trial Island.

Mismagius, visibly delighted, flew ahead of them, as if returning home.

"Did you find this Mismagius in a place filled with Ghost-type energy?" the elder asked.

Hearing the elder's words, Cain suddenly understood why Phoebe and her grandparents hadn't rejected his request.

Was it because of Mismagius's presence?

"Yes," Cain answered truthfully.

Given that these elders were experts in Ghost-type Pokémon and far more experienced than he was, they probably already knew where Mismagius came from. Cain saw no reason to hide the truth.

The elder nodded in satisfaction upon hearing Cain's reply.

He didn't explain further. They continued walking in silence, their steps accompanied only by the crunching of stones beneath their shoes and the soft chime of the bell on Mismagius's chest as she floated.

The atmosphere here was very similar to the dark space Cain had encountered before, but the Ghost-type energy wasn't as dense. At least, with his current level of psychic power, Cain could move around normally.

Haunter and Mismagius began naturally absorbing the Ghost-type energy surrounding them.

Soon, Cain realized that the cave wasn't as deep as he had imagined. After only three minutes, they reached the end.

The Ghost-type energy in this area was extremely dense, but Cain couldn't determine its source or why it concentrated here.

The elder pointed to a small altar at the center and said, "That's the place where the Ghost-type energy is most intense. If you want your Haunter to evolve, that would be the ideal spot."

Cain didn't send Haunter to the altar immediately. Instead, he asked cautiously, "Excuse me, sir, but what exactly is this place? And how is it different from the place where I found Mismagius?"

The elder's expression turned nostalgic.

Without hiding anything, he explained, "This is the interior of Mt. Pyre—or more precisely, an alternate dimension within it. It was once home to a very powerful Pokémon, and the spot you're standing on now was its residence. That altar was where it absorbed energy."

"A powerful Pokémon? A legendary Pokémon?" Cain asked, intrigued.

The elder nodded. "A legendary Pokémon... But it left this place long ago, leaving us this space behind. This cave is the most suitable place for Ghost-type Pokémon to evolve."

"By simply standing on that altar, all the Ghost-type energy accumulated over countless years in Mt. Pyre will begin to converge there."

"But don't worry. The amount of energy stored here is so vast that even that legendary Pokémon couldn't exhaust it. Haunter's evolution will only slightly dilute the energy, but the benefits he'll gain will be beyond your imagination."

The elder explained everything patiently.

By nature, Cain was wary of strangers, but he couldn't shake the feeling that this elder harbored no ill intent or hidden motives.

It was his intuition as a psychic.

Still, Cain asked, "Forgive me if this seems bold, but why are you helping me? Is there something you need me to do in return?"

Cain phrased his question carefully.

The elder's expression didn't change. He smiled and replied, "It's not for you—it's for that legendary Pokémon."

Looking at Mismagius, who floated and played happily in the cave, he continued, "Your Mismagius is special. It carries the presence of that legendary Pokémon. Though that presence is fading, we've lived here so long that we can still sense it."

"That's the reason behind our special ability. Outsiders call it psychic power, but after so many years intertwined with Ghost-type energy, it has transformed somewhat."

"We can still use telepathy and some common psychic techniques, but its essence has changed."

"That's why we call it 'Ghost Power'."

Ghost Power?

It was likely a variation of psychic power, but one that altered its very essence.

Psychic power intertwined with Ghost-type energy?

This stirred something in Cain. He knew his talent with psychic power was limited, with few ways to improve.

Could this Ghost Power help him overcome that limit?

Cain kept these thoughts to himself, saying nothing.

For now, his level of telepathy was more than sufficient.

Besides, Mismagius's influence turned out to be far greater than he had ever imagined.
