Chapter 162 - Pokemon: I Transmigrated Twice [162]
["Regarding Miss Morgan's comments, I don't think Kanto needs to take it too seriously. It's normal for young people to be a bit hot-headed."
On television, the Chairwoman of the Paldea League expressed her thoughts kindly about Karen's earlier remarks that had sparked much controversy.
But calling it controversial might be an overstatement.
After all, hasn't every genius done something brash and childish at some point?
To most people, Karen's remarks were nothing more than the arrogant ramblings of a slightly talented but untested child.
"Wow, Sister Morgan is this bold?"
Hearing about the incident, Ash's mouth formed a big "O."
"Ugh, let her be smug for now. Someone will put her in her place soon enough," Gary said, clearly annoyed.
For the people of Kanto, the Indigo League was the ultimate stage to showcase their skills as Pokémon Trainers—no less revered than how football fans viewed the World Cup in Stephen's previous life.
Yet Karen had dismissed it as a low-level competition. Even though Gary appreciated Stephen for gifting him a Pokédex, as a proud Kanto native, he couldn't help but feel irritated.
What made it worse was that Gary wasn't even that familiar with Karen in the first place.
Red and Blue stayed silent.
The two of them had rewatched Karen's first-round battle several times, as well as those of a few championship favorites highlighted by the media.
And they couldn't help but feel...
It seemed like none of them could stop Karen.
Over the next four days, four rounds of matches took place.
Anyone standing in her way was swept aside by her Galarian Moltres, which was cloaked in black flames.
After every match, Karen would walk up to the cameras and leave a bold message for Aldous, urging him to hurry to the Indigo Plateau so she could expose his disguise.
This behavior piqued the curiosity of viewers who initially dismissed Karen as just a loud-mouthed girl.
Challenging the Elite Four was normal, but why was she so fixated on Aldous?
According to the rankings, shouldn't she start with Lorelei, the weakest of the Four?
Rumors spread like wildfire online.
Some speculated that Karen had been hired by Aldous's father's business rival to target him.
But such comments were quickly dismissed as overly far-fetched.
Besides, Karen was Dr. Stephen's companion—who could afford to hire her?
Another theory, however, gained more traction:
Karen was Aldous's illegitimate daughter, here to settle the score.
Even Stephen rolled his eyes when he came across this speculation.
Four rounds of qualifiers passed, leaving only the top 32 trainers to compete at the Indigo Stadium.
The 32-to-16 matches would still use the 3v3 format, but from the Round of 16 onward, it would switch to full-team, 6v6 battles.
...
The next day.
A small Mismagius stirred, struggling to wake from its slumber.
"Oh, you're awake!"
Daisy quickly walked over and gently picked up the Mismagius.
"Don't move too much—you're still weak. Let's start with some soft food. I'll soak it for you..."
The Mismagius looked around.
This was it!
This was the place where Iono had listened to that human's lectures!
"Woo! Woo-woo! Woo-woo-woo!"
The Mismagius cried out anxiously and struggled in Daisy's arms. But her body was still frail, and no amount of struggling could change that.
"In such a hurry? Don't worry, it'll be ready soon."
Daisy gently comforted the Mismagius, assuming she was just hungry.
The little Pokémon was so desperate it was nearly in tears.
["Unbelievable! Even against a championship favorite and a designated Johto gym leader-in-training, Falkner, Morgan still demonstrated overwhelming power! Despite specializing in aerial combat, Falkner's Pidgeot stood no chance against Morgan's Galarian Moltres! Wow! Although Pidgeot kept trying to dodge the attacks, it couldn't escape and was eventually struck down by Brave Bird!"]
On TV, the Galarian Moltres knocked Pidgeot out of the sky with Brave Bird.
The camera then cut to Karen, who, disguised with Zoroark's powers, stood with one hand on her hip, looking utterly unimpressed.
["Pidgeot is unable to battle! Galarian Moltres wins! Since all three of Falkner's Pokémon are unable to battle, the winner is Morgan!"]
As the referee announced the results, the Mismagius frantically pushed toward the TV.
"Woo! Woo! Woo!"
Seeing the Mismagius's excitement, Daisy sensed something unusual.
She then noticed the camera lingering on Stephen's face in the audience for two extra seconds.
"Woo!! Woo-woo!! Woo-woo-woo!!!"
The Mismagius cried even louder.
"Do you... know Dr. Stephen?" Daisy asked tentatively.
The Mismagius nodded vigorously.
"Then... you came here to see him?"
The Mismagius nodded even more frantically.
Daisy grew increasingly curious. What could this little Mismagius possibly have to do with Dr. Stephen?
After a brief moment of thought, Daisy locked up the research lab and decided to head to the Indigo Plateau herself.
Judging by how desperate the Mismagius was, this had to be something important.
...
After yet another dominant 3-0 victory, Karen once again found herself surrounded by reporters.
A closer look revealed that most of the reporters were from Galar and Paldea—regions that always relished opportunities to report on the League Headquarters' shortcomings.
And, as usual, Karen didn't disappoint.
"Today's opponent was a Johto gym leader-in-training, right? If this is the level of future gym leaders here, I don't think the Indigo League's glory days will last much longer."
The reporters' faces lit up with joy—this was exactly the kind of bold statement they wanted from her.
What they didn't realize was that Karen wasn't trying to insult Falkner.
She had just suddenly remembered how, a month ago, she had challenged Giovanni and earned five Kanto badges in one go.
Compared to those five gym leaders, Falkner wasn't much.
...
In the League Headquarters building adjacent to the stadium,
Chairman Goodshow watched Karen's interview on TV and shook his head with a wry smile.
He didn't overthink it; he simply regarded Karen as a young, exceptionally talented trainer who had yet to taste failure.
"Has Aldous arrived yet?"
Goodshow asked his assistant.
In truth, Aldous's absence from the Elite Four Challenge was nothing new for the Indigo League.
In recent years, most League winners had targeted Lorelei, as the weakest of the Four, for their challenge.
As such, there was usually no need for all four members to attend.
This year, however, Goodshow wanted to promote Lance to replace Agatha, so he summoned the entire Elite Four.
Aldous's response?
"If Lance wants the position, he can have it. I don't see the need for me to be there."
If it were in the past, considering how much tax his father paid to the League, Goodshow would have just turned a blind eye as usual.
But this time, the person Karen repeatedly named and challenged was Aldous.
If he didn't show up, wouldn't it make the Indigo League look like cowards?
"Chairman, for some reason, we can't get in touch with Mr. Aldous, and there's no response from President Caishen either," the assistant reported.
"Hmm?"
Goodshow raised his white eyebrow, sensing an inexplicable sense of foreboding.
...
Player's Dining Hall.
"Morgan, your opponent for tomorrow has been announced. Erm... it's someone named Lily. She's an elite trainer who's made it to the top 32 of the Indigo Conference twice in a row. But honestly, she's probably not as strong as Falkner."
Will stuffed a bite of stew into his mouth as he showed the basic profile of the female contestant on his phone.
"Do I have to go through three more of these boring battles? It's getting repetitive," Karen said, poking her vegetable salad with a fork, looking uninterested.
"That's because, Sister Morgan, you haven't encountered the other hot contender of this year's Conference—Dragon Master Lance's cousin, Miss Clair," Gary interjected.
"She's from the Dragon Clan of Blackthorn City. Rumor has it she has exceptional talent. After this tournament, the current Gym Leader of Blackthorn is planning to step down and pass the position on to his daughter."
"Oh?"
Karen smirked.
If Lance himself showed up, she might be a little cautious. But his cousin?
What a joke.
Just as Stephen was about to comment, his phone suddenly rang.
["Stephen, that little girl named Mary has been missing for nearly half a month. Her parents have already filed a police report,"] came Giovanni's voice over the phone.
Stephen's expression tightened.
Ever since Will mentioned on the plane that Mary and Iono hadn't been active in their group chat for a while, Stephen had asked Giovanni to investigate Mary's situation.
That little girl had once said at Professor Oak's lab that she would help clear Joker's name.
At the time, he hadn't taken it seriously.
After all, she was just a 10-year-old kid—what could she possibly uncover?
But now, it seemed he had underestimated her.
She might have discovered something, and that's why she got caught up in trouble.
Yet... he couldn't contact her either.
He had been too careless. He should've made her a Vivre Card.
"Eh? Sis, why are you here?"
At this moment, Blue noticed a familiar figure entering the dining hall—it was none other than their eldest sister, Daisy.
Before Daisy could respond, the Mismagius in her arms rushed up to Stephen, crying out anxiously, "Hoo-hoo!"
"Dr. Stephen, this Pokemon is..."
Daisy was about to explain.
But Stephen raised his hand, signaling her to wait, as Zoroark had already used telepathy to translate Mismagius's message for him.
"It seems her trainer is in danger, and she's here to ask for my help."
Stephen turned to the others.
"Huh? Doctor, you can understand her?"
Daisy was surprised.
Back at the lab earlier, it had taken her a long time to barely guess the Mismagius's intentions.
"Maybe I just have a knack for it."
Stephen stood up and signaled Will with a glance.
From Stephen's lip movements, Will immediately understood—Iono's Pokémon.
"Stephen, I..."
Karen was also about to get up.
"No, just focus on achieving your dream. Isn't this the moment you've been preparing for all this time? Don't worry, Will and I will handle this," Stephen said, giving Karen a reassuring look as he discreetly handed Zoroark to her under the table.
...
Later, above Johto's skies.
On the starry night above Indigo Plateau, Stephen, riding Latios, spoke to Will, who was riding on Galarian Articuno nearby.
"Mary and Iono snuck into the Olivine Gym's underground facility half a month ago. It seems they haven't come out since."
"What!?"
Will was startled, recalling the most dangerous mission the three of them had ever undertaken together.
Especially that Salamence of Altair, which had suddenly surged from an Elite level to a Champion level.
For a long time after that, he would wake up in cold sweats from nightmares.
"They probably uncovered Shadow's secret," Stephen continued.
Altair and his family had connections with Shadow—this was something Stephen had deduced during their battle in Ilex Forest.
At that time, Shadow executive Elina and another Shadow member with an ape-like appearance had Pokémon that experienced the same sudden surge in power as Altair's Salamence.
If there was no connection between these two groups, no one would believe it.
But Mary was incredibly bold to dare infiltrate their base.
And Iono—she was just as reckless to follow along.
"Half... half a month? Can those two still be alive?"
Will looked incredulous.
"...At the very least, we can't just stand by and do nothing."
Recalling their narrow escape from the Olivine Gym, Stephen figured that if Mary and Iono had been discovered by Altair himself, they might still have a sliver of hope.
After all, that guy wasn't as ruthless as his brother.
The reason the three of them had escaped back then was partly because Altair hadn't gone for the kill right away.
"That little girl really likes you, huh? To the point where she'd risk something this dangerous," Will said thoughtfully. "Why don't you just tell her your true identity? I feel like she's just like Karen—she wouldn't betray you, even if it cost her life."
"Let's save her first," Stephen replied, patting Latios to signal it to speed up.
...
Olivine Gym's Underground Laboratory, Johto Region.
In a corner cell, the door was slightly ajar.
A steaming bowl of food was delivered inside.
Iono quickly grabbed the bowl and placed it between herself and Mary.
"Mary-chan, hurry, eat!"
Iono scooped up a large spoonful and handed it to Mary.
"Joker-sama was framed because he found out about your secrets, wasn't he?"
Despite being locked up for more than half a month, Mary—with her once-neat twin tails now messy and emitting a faint odor—stubbornly stared at the tall figure outside the door.
It was Altair!
"Stop it, Mary-chan. He's not going to tell us anything," Iono said helplessly.
Ever since they had been imprisoned, every time someone sent them food or water, Mary would ask similar questions.
And Altair's response was always the same: silence.
"Exactly."
Just as Iono thought it would be the same as always, Altair suddenly opened his mouth and spoke.
Startled, the spoon in Iono's hand fell to the ground with a clatter.
He spoke!?
"However, we didn't deliberately set him up. His past acts of being a noble thief already made many people in the League dislike him. Given the situation, it was only natural for some people at the top of the League to go all out to smear him," Altair said calmly.
"What is your real goal?!" Mary suddenly raised her voice.
"...To conquer the world."
After a brief silence, Altair finally said the most classic and pure goal of a two-dimensional villain.
Well, at least it's better than those deranged villains who want to destroy the world for the sake of a woman.
"Hey, hey, hey!" Iono exclaimed, eyes wide like a startled Chihuahua. "You—you—you! Why are you suddenly telling us this today? D-Don't tell me you just want us to die knowing the truth?!"
C-Could this be the so-called last meal before execution!?
Altair said nothing and simply opened the prison door wide.
Mary and Iono nervously held each other's small hands.
But Altair's next words left the two girls even more stunned.
"Go."
For a moment, Mary and Iono even wondered if their ears were malfunctioning.
RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE!
A sudden and violent tremor caused both Mary and Iono to lose their balance and fall to the ground.
Even Altair staggered, barely managing to grab the iron bars of the prison door to avoid falling.
"What's going on!?" Altair shouted upwards.
"Lord Altair! It's Joker! Joker and the Psychic Fatty have broken in!" came a panicked voice over the shadow organization's intercom.
The source of this c𝐨ntent is freeweɓnovēl.coɱ.
Joker!?
Hearing this name, Mary and Iono were momentarily stunned before their faces lit up with joy.
"It's been almost two years since they last came knocking, huh?" Altair muttered as he summoned his pseudo-legendary Metagross and quickly rode it, flying off into the distance.
In the cell, the two girls supported each other as they navigated the shaking floor, walking through the dark corridors until they reached the underground laboratory.
It was already deserted.
When they were escorted here a month ago, the place had been filled with shadow members in white lab coats.
"Everyone's here!" Iono exclaimed in surprise when she spotted the Poké Balls containing her Wattrel and Bellibolt in a corner of the lab.
"I'm sorry, Smea Smea, for putting you in danger," Mary said, releasing her Smeargle and hugging it tightly.
RUMBLE! RUMBLE!
The tremors continued.
Iono turned to Mary and said, "Mary-chan, this place might collapse. Let's get out of here quickly."
"Mm!" Mary nodded firmly.
Joker-sama... is waiting up there!
...
BOOM!
At night, the Olivine City Gym.
A massive explosion broke the silence for the first time in two years, sending up a cloud of dust that obscured the moonlight.
Hearing the commotion, the citizens of Olivine City woke up from their dreams and looked out their windows toward the firelight in the Gym at the city center.
Huh?
This scene looks kind of familiar.
Amid the rising smoke and dust, Vazil, a member of the shadow organization's dark division, yelled angrily, "Everyone, attack! Don't give them a chance to catch their breath!"
"Golbat! Air Cutter!"
"Claydol! Psychic!"
"Magmortar! Flamethrower!"
Nearly a hundred Pokémon surrounded the target in a circle, launching their attacks. The scene was utterly spectacular.
Amid the booming explosions, the ground beneath half the city trembled incessantly.
When the dust cleared, what appeared before the shadow members was a massive spherical barrier.
Inside the barrier stood none other than Joker, Suicune, and Psychic Fatty.
