"Are you confident?" Pierce asked.

Tapu Fini had Pseudo-Champion-level strength, and it was a completely unfamiliar Pokémon that had never appeared before. Its ability, moves, any special skill—everything about it was unknown.

And at times like this, the unknown meant danger.

Although Julian’s Metagross was powerful, the guardian of this island was surely no weak opponent either.

And to be able to become a guardian, its strength had to be among the island's very best.

"Don’t worry."

Julian nodded. As long as Tapu Fini didn’t draw on the island’s power to break through to the Champion level, he was ninety percent confident he could defeat it.

Just in terms of base stats (570), the four guardians like Tapu Fini didn’t even reach pseudo-legendary status. What made them special was their ability to draw power from the island.

"Metagross."

"Meta~"

Metagross responded to Julian.

The battle was about to begin. Pierce and the other three naturally stepped back to give them enough space—though more importantly, to protect themselves from any collateral damage.

"Metagross, Mega Evolve."

Not daring to underestimate the opponent, Julian chose to Mega Evolve right away. At level 77, Metagross was still at a disadvantage against the level 85 Tapu Fini.

The higher a Pokémon’s level, the greater the power gap between them.

Julian’s Metagross was able to defeat Elite-level Pokémon even while still at pseudo-Elite rank. After Mega Evolution, it could even defeat peak-level Elites.

However, as opponents get stronger, its ability to battle above its level was gradually decreasing.

Any Pokémon that reached Pseudo-Champion level was undoubtedly a powerhouse. And Pokémon of that caliber could only be found in Advanced or Top-tier secret realms and ruins, and were very rare.

So even though Metagross had been meticulously trained by Julian, facing an opponent with such a level gap without Mega Evolution would’ve been too risky.

Mega Metagross appeared on the battlefield. Its level temporarily rose from 77 to 80, reaching the peak of Elite rank, just one step away from Pseudo-Champion.

The stronger the Pokémon, the smaller the boost from Mega Evolution.

If a Champion-level Pokémon were to Mega Evolve, it might only gain one level.

“Fini~”

Tapu Fini, who had been a little nonchalant at first, was startled to see Metagross’s strength suddenly rise and its appearance completely change.

Though it had never seen Mega Evolution before, it recognized the process as similar to how it could borrow the power of the island—an ability that could temporarily boost its strength.

Sensing the powerful aura radiating from Metagross, strong enough to threaten it, Tapu Fini's dormant fighting spirit began to stir bit by bit.

As the island's guardian, aside from the other three, no other Pokémon could truly be its match.

"Fini fini!"

Tapu Fini beckoned to Metagross, the gesture full of provocation.

Usually, it was Metagross who did things like that.

"Meta~"

Metagross: "Hey, that’s my move."

'Teleport + Meteor Mash.'

Metagross made the first move. In an instant, it appeared right in front of Tapu Fini. With overwhelming force, its Meteor Mash punched forward, the pressure so intense that the air beneath its fist seemed to solidify.

Boom!

A stream of shimmering blue water appeared around Tapu Fini, blocking Meteor Mash. The flowing water trembled violently—and then, to Tapu Fini’s surprise, the Aqua Ring shattered on impact.

Because of Aqua Ring, Meteor Mash had lost much of its power. Faced with the weakened blow, Tapu Fini closed its shell with a thud, it was blasted back dozens of meters, before finally coming to a stop.

"Not bad."

Julian muttered.

Aqua Ring was originally a healing move, yet Tapu Fini had used it for defense—and its healing effect was still active.

"Fini~"

Opening its shell, Tapu Fini stretched its arms forward. Water Pulse surged out, surrounded by swirling air currents. The air itself seemed to become damp and heavy.

"Psycho Cut," Julian said.

The crescent-shaped psychic blade cut through the Water Pulse, but Tapu Fini was no longer there.

The next second, a powerful Hydro Pump blasted down from above, crashing into Metagross. The tremendous impact forced Metagross lower and lower.

Boom!

With a bang, Metagross was slammed into the ground.

However, Tapu Fini’s Hydro Pump wasn't over yet—it kept pouring down with relentless force.

The impact from Hydro Pump kept driving Metagross deeper into the ground.

The earth cracked under the assault, fissures spreading rapidly. Water and large chunks of rock gushed out from the cracks.

Within a 3,000-meter radius, the ground was collapsing and shattering.

If this kept going, a small lake could actually form.

Compared to Julian’s unchanged expression, the expressions of Pierce and the other three became extremely solemn.

“This Hydro Pump... I don’t think Metagross can hold out,” Asher said.

Asher had seen Champion-level Pokémon use Hydro Pump before, and while Tapu Fini’s attack wasn’t quite at that level, it wasn’t far off either.

"If Metagross loses, we’ll just go one by one. It only said we can’t fight all at once, not that we can’t take turns," Rowan suggested.

But he was quickly shut down by Ember: "You think it didn’t think of that? Try exploiting a loophole and watch it break through to Champion level and crush all of us into the ground."

Even the dullest Pokémon, once they reached the Pseudo-Champion level, had intelligence on par with humans. Any loophole you could think of—don’t think they wouldn’t notice too.

The Hydro Pump lasted a full three minutes from start to finish, without any drop in power.

“Fini~”

Tapu Fini was slightly out of breath. Maintaining such a high-intensity, long-duration Hydro Pump was quite a burden.

At the very least, it had definitely consumed a lot of stamina.

Still, the battle should be over now.

Tapu Fini looked confidently at the area below, which had now become a small lake.

Tapu Fini: 'It couldn’t have... drowned, right?'

That thought had barely formed when—BOOM!—a massive column of water shot up from below, piercing the sky. Within the spray, a silver-white blur could be seen.

As the water column exploded outward, Metagross appeared just one meter in front of Tapu Fini, its eyes glowing with a faint blue light.

Under Psychic, Tapu Fini was instantly immobilized. It couldn’t even perform its instinctual shell-closing motion.

Still held by the psychic force, Tapu Fini was hurled downward. It crashed through trees, rocks, and everything in its path was shattered by the force of its own body.

Metagross was still guiding it in circles, as if dragging it in a spiral. From above, one could see the forest below forming a spiral pattern, with the small lake at its center.

The timing was perfect—exactly three minutes.

Metagross: 'You made me stay underground for three minutes. I’ll make you spin for three minutes.'
