Jack had already moved on to selecting his second Pokemon. His fingers hovered over the Pokeballs, sliding past the second and third before finally stopping at the fourth. With a flick of his wrist, he released it onto the field.
A Jumpluff landed gracefully, its light body bouncing slightly as it settled. A Grass- and Flying-type—immune to Ground-type moves and resistant to Fighting-types. It was a solid choice against Hariyama.
However, from Jack's hesitation, John could tell that Jumpluff hadn't been his first choice. It was a reactionary pick, forced by the overwhelming pressure Hariyama had exerted.
"Jumpluff!" The cotton-ball Pokemon twirled excitedly, its three puffs spinning in the air.
Its Chlorophyll ability had kicked in.
John smirked. "Another Chlorophyll ability?"
Jack's ace Pokemon was Venusaur, the iconic powerhouse of the Chiba Gym. That meant most of the gym's disciples followed the same strategy—relying on Venusaur and its Chlorophyll ability.
"So, it's a sun-boosted, fast Grass-type team," John mused, his eyes glinting with understanding.
"Jumpluff, use Fairy Wind!" Jack took the initiative.
Jumpluff leaped into the air, twirling mid-spin, sending out a gust of sparkling pink wind toward Hariyama.
Psychic-type moves were Hariyama's weakness, and though Fairy Wind wasn't exactly a powerhouse move, it was a smart choice given the circumstances.
"Return!" John called, withdrawing Hariyama before the attack could land. In its place, he sent out Aggron.
The pink gust barely fazed the Steel-type Pokemon. It felt more like a soft breeze than an attack.
The crowd erupted in excitement.
"A Shiny Aggron?!"
The disciples of the Chiba Gym stared in disbelief. Two Shiny Pokemon in a row? It was unheard of.
Even Jack's family turned to Mark, expecting an explanation.
Mark opened his mouth but quickly shut it. He wanted to explain but realized he knew nothing. John had never told him about his Shiny Pokemon collection.
"Aggron, use Rock Slide!" John commanded.
With a roar, Aggron raised its mighty claws. A dark portal formed in the sky, and from it, boulders rained down upon the battlefield.
Jumpluff might be fast, but Rock Slide covered a wide area. There was no dodging this.
"Switch out!" Jack hurriedly withdrew Jumpluff and sent in Torterra.
The massive Grass/Ground-type tanked the attack, barely flinching. Smart move—Torterra resisted Rock-type moves and had a clear advantage over Aggron's secondary Steel typing.
But John had expected this.
"Use Earthquake!" Jack commanded.
John smirked. "We'll match that. Aggron, use Earthquake!"
Both Pokemon slammed the ground simultaneously, sending shockwaves across the battlefield. The two waves met in the middle, canceling each other out.
The crowd murmured in surprise. Torterra had the type advantage. Why hadn't its Earthquake overpowered Aggron's?
The answer was simple: John's Aggron had Rock Head and had been specifically trained for raw power. The extra attack boost evened out the playing field.
"Use Solar Beam!" Jack commanded. The battlefield's Sunny Day effect meant no charging time—Torterra immediately began absorbing light, the tree on its back glowing gold.
Just as the attack was about to launch, Aggron unleashed a blinding beam of energy.
"Hyper Beam! Now!" John ordered.
The two beams clashed midair, exploding on impact. Smoke engulfed the battlefield, blanketing everything in darkness.
But John knew better than to hesitate.
"Earthquake, again!" he ordered.
"Same here!" Jack countered.
Another set of shockwaves collided. But this time, something massive emerged from the smoke.
A massive burst of fire erupted, heading straight for Torterra.
Jack's eyes widened. "Wait—Fire?!"
Aggron wasn't known for Fire-type moves. How did it—?
John grinned. "Yeah, turns out TMs come in handy," he said with a cheeky smile.
