Private Marriage, Secret Love-Chapter 40: Enemies on a Narrow Road
"Ethan Lancaster!" Raina had barely eaten anything, and now she was consumed with rage. "Are you really trying to get someone killed?"
"What’s the rush? We’re on our way, aren’t we?" Ethan Lancaster was in no hurry at all. "How can you be a doctor with such a fiery temper?"
"You know I’m a doctor, yet you expect me to just stand by and let someone die?"
Ethan Lancaster scoffed. "Fine, I’ll call you a living saint, how about that? Wasn’t he only saved because I was doing you a favor?"
Raina Reddington turned and walked out of the restaurant. This time, Ethan Lancaster didn’t give her any more trouble. After the car started, it sped up, heading for the nearest hospital.
The GPS navigation guided the car forward until it pulled into the hospital and stopped in front of the outpatient building.
Raina Reddington reached to open the car door, but Ethan Lancaster yanked her back. "What are you doing?"
"Saving him."
"You’re not needed."
Seth Sinclair got out of the car first. Through the tinted window, Raina Reddington saw the men from the car behind them all get out. They clumsily hauled Miles Hawthorne out of the car and then just dumped him on the ground at the main entrance.
Raina Reddington slammed her hands against the window as she watched the men quickly get back in their car. The doors shut, the engine revved, and they sped away.
She was stunned speechless. In the brief moment she turned back to look at Ethan Lancaster, Seth Sinclair had also gotten back in the car. The driver stomped on the gas and quickly turned the wheel. Raina practically jumped up. "Why did you just dump him at the entrance? Call a doctor!"
"The one thing a hospital isn’t short on is doctors. Someone will save him."
Raina Reddington saw a crowd quickly forming around Miles Hawthorne. "But this will delay his treatment..."
"What, did you expect me to wait in line and register him? What if he tries to pull an insurance scam?"
Raina Reddington slammed her hand on the window. "Do you think Miles Hawthorne is short on cash?"
Ethan Lancaster’s expression turned cold. "It was good enough that I brought him to the hospital at all. When he wanted to bury me alive, why didn’t you go and slap him?"
Hearing this, Seth Sinclair couldn’t hold back any longer. His expression hardened as he turned around. "Fourth Master, I’ll have someone take care of him."
Raina Reddington felt goosebumps rise on her skin. Ethan Lancaster’s gaze swept lightly over Seth Sinclair’s face. "It’s not your place to speak."
Seth Sinclair pressed his lips together and ultimately said nothing, his gaze fixed straight ahead.
After returning to Stoneworth, Raina Reddington’s life got back on track. There was no news from Miles Hawthorne’s side, which probably meant he was fine.
After work, Raina Reddington made a special trip to the mall to pick out a gift. A friend from junior high had called her a few days ago to say she was getting married and insisted that Raina come to the get-together.
She bought a necklace as a gift. While not extravagant, it was certainly presentable.
Raina Reddington drove to the appointed location. After entering the hotel, she asked a server for directions. When the server heard she was a guest for one of the private rooms upstairs, he personally led her there.
Before she even reached the door, Raina Reddington could hear laughter coming from inside the private room. A small smile touched her lips, and after thanking the server, she pushed the door open and went in.
"Raina!"
The star of the evening opened her arms to Raina Reddington from across the room. "Long time no see! I’ve missed you like crazy."
Raina Reddington hugged her, patting her on the back a couple of times. "Joanna, congratulations."
"Raina, you’re terrible! I heard you got married, is that true?"
Raina Reddington pulled back and handed her the gift. "Yes. I’ll definitely treat you all to a meal another day."
Hearing this, Joanna Lloyd pretended to be angry and didn’t take the gift. "How could you do this? You get married and completely forget all about me..."
"Alright, alright, how about I down three drinks as an apology later?"
"That’s more like it." Joanna Lloyd led her to the table and pulled out a chair for her to sit. "I’ve barely kept in touch with anyone from junior high. After I moved here, I lost contact with a lot of friends. I even had to go through our old class monitor just to find you..."
"Raina Reddington, I heard you became a doctor, is that right?" another old classmate at the table asked.
"Yes."
"I’m so jealous."
Raina Reddington couldn’t quite remember the other woman’s name. ’I vaguely recall it was something with Eve...’ But Eve Fletcher remembered her quite well. "Didn’t Joanna say we could bring our significant others? Why didn’t you bring your husband?"
"Oh, he’s busy. He’s working overtime tonight." Raina Reddington and Ethan Lancaster had an agreement not to interfere in each other’s private lives.
"No matter how busy he is, he shouldn’t be completely indifferent to his wife’s affairs."
Joanna Lloyd pushed Eve Fletcher’s shoulder. "Raina’s husband is a capable man. It’s normal for him to be busy."
Raina Reddington noticed a few empty seats at the table. "Is not everyone here yet?"
"Not yet. We’re just waiting for one more friend."
Just as she spoke, there was a stir from outside, and then the door to the private room was pushed open again. ’Talk about a small world for enemies.’ Raina Reddington never would have imagined the world could be so small that she would run into Miranda Cameron here.
"Wendy!" Joanna Lloyd waved enthusiastically toward the door. "Come on over, we were just waiting for you."
When Miranda Cameron saw Raina Reddington, she, too, was taken aback. Her brows furrowed slightly as she walked over.
"Why are you so late? Hey, didn’t you say your boyfriend was coming too? Where is he?"
Hearing this, Raina Reddington felt a chill run down her spine. ’The boyfriend Miranda Cameron is talking about... it couldn’t be Ethan Lancaster, could it?’
"He’ll be here any minute," Miranda Cameron said, handing over a gift. "This is for you. Congratulations."
Joanna Lloyd took one look at the box and knew the gift inside was expensive. "Oh no, I can’t accept this. It’s too valuable."
"Don’t be so formal with me. Besides, I don’t even know what it is. Someone else prepared it for me."
Eve Fletcher, who had been enjoying the show from the side, couldn’t help but chime in. "Your boyfriend prepared it, right? Joanna, hurry up and see what’s inside."
"Yeah, open it. To be honest, I’m curious too." Miranda Cameron walked over and sat in an empty seat. Joanna Lloyd unwrapped the box and saw a Cartier watch inside.
A truly lavish gift.
"This... I really can’t accept this."
Miranda Cameron feigned anger. "There’s no sense in returning a gift. That’s very bad luck."
"By the way, Raina, your husband is so successful. What gift did you get for Joanna? Can we see it?" Eve Fletcher had never gotten along with Raina Reddington back in school, and now that she finally had an opportunity, she certainly wasn’t going to let it pass.
Raina Reddington replied coolly, "And you? What did you get her?"
"I..." Eve Fletcher’s expression changed. "I’m different. I’m single. I can’t compete when it comes to boyfriends and husbands."
Seeing the tense atmosphere, Joanna Lloyd quickly changed the subject. "Wendy, see where your boyfriend is?"
Right on cue, Miranda Cameron’s phone rang. She stood up, answering the call as she announced to the others, "Looks like he’s here."
She put down her handbag and walked toward the entrance. Just as she opened the door, she saw the man who was about to enter.
Miranda Cameron stood in front of the man, seemingly explaining the situation in the room. The man was tall and slender with a cold, stern face. He had the air of someone noble and untouchable. His eyes passed over the top of Miranda’s head and met the gaze of Raina Reddington, who was seated inside.
Raina Reddington felt as if she’d been struck by lightning. ’Whatever you fear most is what comes to pass.’ It really was Ethan Lancaster.
"Ethan," Miranda Cameron explained in a low voice, "I honestly didn’t know I’d run into her here. Maybe we should just go?"
"It’s fine." After saying this, Ethan Lancaster put his arm around her shoulder and walked in.
