Prosperous Marriage: Married to My Brother-in-law-Chapter 785 - 783_1
"Who said your wife and child are here?" Before Glades Horne could reply, Marcel Horne, the second young master of the Horne Family, who had a military background and was particularly sensitive to Noah Reyes’s origins, stepped forward with a cold and stern face. He stood face to face with Noah Reyes, black eyes meeting black eyes, and the tension thickened palpably.
Of all the young Horne masters, Marcel was the genuinely indifferent one. Apart from the warmth he reserved exclusively for his wife, Ruby Bluen, he was cool towards everyone else.
With his military upbringing, Marcel’s demeanor was upright and stern. His robust figure matched Noah Reyes’s, and a flash in his deep eyes even suggested he wouldn’t mind dispensing immediate justice on Noah Reyes right then and there.
Noah Reyes embodied coldness, prestige, and ruthless cruelty. Standing opposite Marcel, they presented a stark contrast—one of righteousness against one of evil, inherently oppositional.
"Uncle, this is my daddy, and I’m my daddy’s son!" Jimmy Horne, now a year older, showed no deference to his uncle and bluntly broke the deadlock, making it clear he was firmly on his father’s side.
As his young yet matter-of-fact voice rose, the expressions on the faces of the five young masters twitched. This kid is truly an ingrate! All this time, we doted on him as our own, raising him for nearly five years, all for nothing. The moment his biological father shows up, he immediately switches allegiances. Is the bond of blood really so strong?
Noah Reyes was thrilled. He hadn’t spent much time with his son, yet his son was willing to be his ally. What more could a father ask for?
Instinctively, he held his son even tighter.
Jimmy Horne blinked his dark eyes, standing firmly with his father, facing his uncle who exuded an aura of righteousness and was resolute in giving his daddy a hard time.
What a father-son alliance!
Marcel’s face darkened further.
Glades Horne’s eyes merely deepened a shade; he kept his lips sealed, saying nothing.
The brothers actually harbored resentment against Noah Reyes. Because of him, their only sister had suffered for so many years. Noah Reyes had no idea how nasty the rumors had been when their sister was pregnant. That period was the hardest blow their sister had ever experienced.
Yes, their sister had once been spoiled and willful, so headstrong that sometimes even they could hardly stand her. But she was still their sister. Seeing her return from her ordeals, suddenly matured, the price she had paid wounded their hearts as her brothers.
Even now that they knew Noah Reyes had acted as he did back then to protect their sister’s life, human nature meant they still held grudges. They couldn’t help but resent Noah Reyes for the years of humiliation their sister had endured, resent him that their little nephew had once been called a bastard. The memory of their young nephew innocently asking, "Why don’t I have a daddy by my side?" cut them to the quick time and again.
Now that the main culprit was right before their eyes, the brothers felt they had to give this man—whom they had secretly acknowledged as their prospective brother-in-law—a hard time, just to settle the score.
"Billy, come to your fourth uncle’s arms." James Horne squeezed out a warm smile and extended his large hands, hoping to take Jimmy Horne into his embrace.
Jimmy Horne shook his head and clung tighter to Noah Reyes’s neck.
He had just gotten his daddy back, and then his daddy had suddenly disappeared for half a year. This time, no matter what, he was determined to stick close to his daddy and not let him vanish again.
"What do you want?" Noah Reyes asked, holding his son and standing tall, unintimidated by the imposing attitude of his five brothers-in-law.
As he stepped into the Horne family’s villa and saw the five young masters lined up at the door, he knew they were going to test him and make things difficult for him. But he wasn’t afraid. This time, he was determined to enter the house, even if it meant facing a thousand hardships or crossing a sea of fire. He had to explain everything to Adele, to love her endlessly. He loved her! From the first time they made love, he had developed feelings for her, lost his heart to her. He didn’t question why, nor did he care if it was love at first sight; he had simply fallen in love with her. He also knew his background and upbringing were riddled with stains; one could say he was a demon in the eyes of many. She, however, was the young lady of T City’s foremost family, the Hornes. Even if she had been capricious and unreasonable before, she had never broken the law; her family background was impeccable. In his eyes, she was the warm sun in the daytime, someone not originally from his world. Yet, he feared the darkness; he longed for his share of light, and she was that sunlight in his life.
"What do we want? We don’t want much," the fifth young master, Harry Horne, began, a teasing smile on his face as he idly played with his hands, looking as if he’d love to plant a fist on Noah Reyes’s handsome face. "It’s Chinese New Year, the very first day, and you say you’re here to pick up your wife and child. But they’ve been eating, drinking, living, and generally enjoying themselves here, and that’s cost quite a bit of money. What do you have to say about that?"
Due to his busy schedule and hurried arrival, Noah Reyes hadn’t shaved the stubble that had freshly appeared, though it didn’t detract from his handsomeness.
Noah Reyes’s expression remained unchanged as he asked coldly, "Fifth Young Master, please step aside and calculate it slowly. Whatever amount you come up with, I’ll pay double."
Harry smiled and replied, "That’s fine, just don’t go back on your word later."
After speaking, he extended his hand. Noah Reyes tensed instantly. Does this fifth brother-in-law actually want to fight?
But Harry simply reached out and pinched Jimmy Horne’s little cheek, remarking as if a thought had just struck him, "You little ingrate, so disloyal. I curse you to never win Camila’s heart."
With that, he laughed gleefully and darted into the house. He somehow produced a calculator and actually began to crunch the numbers.
Noah Reyes visibly relaxed. Fortunately, the fifth young master was easy to appease. He had thought all five of his brothers-in-law might join forces to beat him up.
"It’s the New Year holiday; you couldn’t possibly have come empty-handed, could you?" the third young master, Henry Horne, said with a faint smile. His dark eyes twinkled, as if he, too, were calculating something.
"What’s needed?" Noah Reyes asked, still composed.
Henry smiled. "You say you’ve come to take your wife and child, but are you married? Do you even have a wife? Even if Billy is your son, right now he’s merely your illegitimate child. Don’t you think you should have prepared something before coming to fetch them?"
Noah Reyes looked steadily at Henry and then said in a deep voice, "Would the entire Black Emperor Group suffice?"
The implicit meaning in Henry’s words was that Noah Reyes should present a formal marriage proposal with a bride price.
Henry glanced at Glades Horne, who kept his lips pursed in silence. However, when Noah Reyes mentioned the entire Black Emperor Group, a momentary flicker of appreciation crossed Glades’s eyes. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Touching his nose, Henry found himself speechless. The entire Black Emperor Group as a bride price—what an astronomical sum!
He also extended his hand, pinching Jimmy’s little cheek, and added his own "curse," "Little ingrate, all those five years of doting on you were wasted. Your third uncle isn’t as malicious as your fifth uncle; I won’t curse you to lose Camila’s heart. I’ll just curse you to have eighteen rivals. He chuckled. "Not too many, you know, just eighteen."
After saying his piece, he too laughed and darted into the house.
