Chapter 125: Impossible to Refuse

That night, when Lucas came home, Sophia was still toying with the necklace in her hand.

"You’re back."

"I’m going to shower first."

Lucas said it and went straight into the bathroom.

Sophia’s brow tightened. His behavior felt off. He normally would cling to her for a while when he got home—today he hadn’t moved to even kiss her.

Lucas had just stripped when, suddenly, the door opened. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

He took a step back.

"You been doing something behind my back?"

He gave a short, embarrassed laugh. "How could I?"

Sophia’s nostrils flared. She grabbed his shirt collar and brought her face close to his. "XNE perfume."

She’d not only smelled it—she’d named the product exactly.

She stared at him, waiting for an explanation.

"I... it’s nothing. I just met with a client today."

"A client? Are you sure, Lucas?"

Sophia had wanted to trust him. She still wanted to. But his attitude right now was confusing at best.

"I’m sure. Trust me—I would never do anything to betray you."

Sophia took a deep breath and forced a smile. "You’re right. I should trust you."

She turned and started to leave without hesitation, but as she stepped out of the bathroom—

—she was yanked back.

When she bumped into Lucas’s chest, she didn’t push him away. She just looked at him coldly.

"Sophia..."

Lucas lowered his head and drew the person in his arms closer.

Then Sophia’s cool voice whispered in his ear: "Let go of me."

No one could force her into anything she didn’t want.

She fixed him with a stare. "I don’t want a man who can’t control himself. Lucas, we haven’t known each other long enough for that."

She spun away and slammed the door—hard. The bang echoed.

Lucas shut his eyes and turned on the shower. Water ran over his skin.

A tiny thread of hope in Sophia’s chest began to die. She had expected him to come after her and tell her she’d misunderstood, to insist nothing had happened. But it looked like there had been something she didn’t know about.

She waited. The bathroom was silent for a long while.

She grabbed a pillow, cracked the bathroom door, and was about to leave when—suddenly! A heavy thud came from inside, like something fell.

Without thinking, Sophia sprinted in. "Lucas!"

When she opened the door, steam billowed out in white waves.

Lucas lay on the floor, eyes clamped shut.

Sophia spun on the exhaust fan, hauled him up, and struggled to carry him out.

"Lucas, Lucas!"

She pressed her ear to his chest to find a heartbeat, checked his head for bumps, then pinched his philtrum hard.

He didn’t move.

She was about to call an ambulance when his pupils flickered.

Huh?

Had she imagined it?

She grabbed his face and pinched him hard.

Still nothing.

Sophia’s gaze went ice-cold. "I’ll give you three seconds to decide—keep pretending, or wake up."

Panic tightened in Lucas. She’d seen through him. Pretend or not? Sophia might be testing him.

In less than three seconds, he opened his eyes and clutched her.

"I was wrong..."

His voice was low and magnetic, and his little-pleading act was pretty convincing.

Sophia shot him a look. "Explain. Or get out."

"A woman came today I couldn’t refuse."

"Couldn’t refuse? Lucas, I was out there looking for proof, taking care of that other woman—so you give me a ’couldn’t refuse’?"

Her fist clenched; she held herself back from actually punching him.

Lucas rested his head on her shoulder. "Sophia, I messed up. Don’t be mad. That woman... she saved my life."

Sophia frowned. "You have three minutes."

"Back when Aiden set me up and I crashed... if it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be alive right now."

One simple sentence explained everything.

"I never did anything to betray you. Someone from the bar called and said she was drunk. She saved my life, so I went. I took her back to her hotel."

"A setup."

Lucas blinked. "A setup?"

"She picked you out of a phone full of contacts. Not random. She targeted you. Men like you are too easy to bait. Should I call you naïve or just stupid? Too pure? Yet you’re a wolf. Too foolish? Yet you’re the fox everyone fears in the business world."

Hearing the full story, Sophia felt a weight lift off her chest.

"XNE limited-edition perfume. So the woman who saved you is a pampered heiress."

"I swear, I didn’t touch her. I dropped her off and left."

"Really?"

Beautiful woman. Drunk. Alone. And he did nothing?

"I swear!"

"She didn’t cling to you? Didn’t beg you to stay? Didn’t ask you to ’keep her company because she’s lonely and empty and cold’?"

Lucas looked stunned. "How do you know?"

Sophia snorted. "Because it’s textbook seduction. So you didn’t stay? What, are you not a man?"

"She said she was lonely and cold, so I tossed her onto the bed, wrapped her up tight in the blanket, and left."

"You left?!"

Lucas answered like it was obvious. "Yes. What else was I supposed to do?"

"You turned her into a burrito and walked out?"

"Correct. Problem?"

Sophia arched a brow. "Then why didn’t you just tell me when you got home? Why run?"

"I smelled like perfume. I didn’t want you to notice. So I cleaned up and came out fresh. Smell me. I smell good, right?"

He leaned toward her. Sophia shoved him back. "Stop it."

"No really. Smell."

How could a mature man say something so ridiculous with a straight face?

Sophia dodged. She barely took half a step away when suddenly he yanked her back into his arms.

"Trying to run?"

"Lucas, listen to me. The marks on my neck haven’t even faded yet!"

"Then stamp me too. I’m guessing she’ll show up again tomorrow."

Sophia froze and stared at him.

He pointed to the most visible spot on his neck. "Here? Or here? Your call."

"You sure?"

"Positive."

Sophia turned—"No."

Too many people would see.

"Fine. No problem."

Lucas did not force her.

"Lucas, are you trying to play push-and-pull with me?"

"Yes. And you caught me."

In one swift motion, Sophia flipped, pinning him down. "Fine. I’ll stamp you."

Lucas’s brows lifted, then he chuckled. "Ever heard of an old-fashioned social virtue?"

"Coexisting peacefully?"

"Reciprocity."

He cupped her head and kissed her.

"Lucas, you tricked me again!"
