Chapter 198: The Disappointment

"You’re being too extreme, Sophia. I’m your uncle. Whether you want to admit it or not, we share some of the same blood. What I owe your mother, and what I owe you—I’ll make it right. I won’t fail you. And as for your aunt, she’s not nearly as bad as you think."

"I don’t care what kind of person she is. Frank, you know exactly what you’ve done. Don’t tell me you can live your whole life with a clean conscience."

Frank pinched the bridge of his nose, helpless. "Sophia, you—hello? ...Sophia?"

Before he could finish, the call cut off.

Frank stared at the phone and let out a long sigh.

"Dad, I want a new car. Wire me the money."

The office door suddenly swung open as Nathan sauntered in, dropping into a chair with his legs spread.

Frank frowned. "A new car? Again? You’ve replaced three cars in one year."

"Oh, come on," Nathan scoffed. "Just transfer the money. A car is a man’s second woman—my pride. Dad, you know how old I am. Don’t you want me to finally attract a girlfriend and settle down?"

"A girlfriend? Most people get married for love. You think someone’s going to fall for you because they’re impressed by your car?"

His son was becoming more and more outrageous.

A car worth millions was one thing—buying several a year was another.

Nathan shot him a glare. "Dad, I just want a new car. My credit card is maxed out, by the way. Make sure you pay it off."

"What? Maxed out?!"

Nathan clicked his tongue. "Why are you acting like it’s the end of the world? Don’t make such a big deal out of it. Dad, just give me the money. Hurry up!"

His urgency only deepened Frank’s frown. "I’m not giving you anything."

"No money? That’s impossible! Dad, don’t lie to me. I really love that car. Just buy it for me, okay?"

Nathan reached toward Frank’s phone, trying to transfer the money himself.

"Enough! Don’t push your luck!"

Frank snatched the phone back, furious. "I’ve spoiled you far too much. That’s why you think you can get away with anything! All you do is ask for money—do you know how pathetic that is? Look at Ryan. At least he secured a major partnership for the company. And you? What have you ever done?"

Nathan stiffened, staring at him. "Dad, what’s that supposed to mean? You think I’m not as good as Ryan? Don’t forget—I’m your real son! And now you’re comparing me to him? In your eyes, I can’t match him in anything, is that it? Am I just some useless leech to you?"

"Glad you finally said it out loud! I’ve indulged you so much that you don’t even hear yourself anymore!" Frank snapped, anger rising. "You... you’ve really disappointed me!"

"Me? I disappointed you?" Nathan shouted back. "You’re the one who disappointed me! I don’t even have the right to change my car now? Wow, Dad... just amazing."

Frank stared at him, stunned. "Watch your mouth. I’m your father!"

"Father? Please. If I knew this was how it’d go, I wouldn’t have bothered coming. You refuse to go back to City Y, and God knows what you’re doing in this branch office. And I heard you earlier—you’re working with YL. Who knows? Maybe you’ve got your eyes on that brat Sophia and plan to give me another brother—"

Smack!

The slap echoed sharply in the spacious office.

Frank’s hand trembled violently.

The slap mark on Nathan’s cheek slowly turned red.

He stared back in disbelief. "Dad... you actually hit me? You hit me because of Sophia?"

A mocking smile tugged at his lips. "So I was right—feeling guilty, aren’t you?"

"Nathan, you—!"

Frank was shaking with anger. Just as he raised his hand again, Nathan grabbed his wrist midair.

"You hit me once and that wasn’t enough? You really think I’d let you do it again? You think I’d give you the chance?"

He flung Frank’s hand away.

"Dad, you’re not young anymore. You’d better behave yourself. I’m not like my mom—playing dumb and accepting Ryan like it’s nothing. If you dare fool around outside..." He let out a cold laugh. "Just wait. I’ll ruin you completely. I won’t let you get a single ounce of benefit out of it."

Nathan shot him an icy look, stormed out, and slammed the door behind him.

Frank staggered, bumping into his desk. He lowered his head, staring at his trembling hand.

He had just struck his own son.

In over twenty years, he had never laid a hand on him.

But the things Nathan said just now... he truly couldn’t hold back.

He had spoiled him since childhood, loved him, given him everything he ever asked for.

If Nathan wanted the stars from the sky, he would’ve tried to pull them down for him.

But after all these years... what kind of person had he raised?

All his love had produced someone completely useless, someone not even half as capable as his younger son, Ryan.

For the first time, Frank questioned whether he had spoiled him too much—so much that he had grown into someone empty and indulgent.

If the boy had simply been obedient, he could have tolerated it. But Nathan brought burden after burden to the family, spending obsessively just to feed his vanity. His parenting...

Had failed.

Frank picked up his phone and stared at Nathan’s contact photo, closing his eyes.

Outside the building, Nathan was still fuming, his expression darkening by the second.

Suddenly, his phone buzzed. He checked the screen—and the storm on his face instantly eased.

"Should’ve transferred the money earlier. Why make such a fuss?"

Eight million had arrived.

Nathan smirked. He could pay back the debt now.

But after only a few steps, someone approached him from ahead.

"Nathan."

Nathan blinked. "Ethan? What are you doing here? How did you know I was around?"

Ethan walked up with a friendly grin, slinging an arm around his shoulder. "Of course I came looking for you. I found a really fun place today. Want to check it out?"

Nathan hesitated, uneasy. "I don’t want to gamble anymore. If I keep going, they’ll find out. After I pay them back, I’m quitting for good."

Ethan looked at him disapprovingly. "I know what you’re worried about—you’re just scared of losing again. But I already scoped things out. If we go today, we’re guaranteed to win. And I’ve... made some arrangements inside, if you know what I mean."

Ethan’s sly smile made the itch return in Nathan’s chest.

"What’s wrong, Nathan? Scared? Just tell me—are you in or not? I’ve got your back."

Nathan clenched his teeth. "You’re sure we’ll win?"

"Absolutely."

"...Fine. Let’s go."
