Quills: the Rise of the Northern Matriarch-Chapter 112: Tools
Chapter 112 - Tools
Nora felt a sting as the Hudai Tech software was formatted off of her hardware. She was thankful that her children would not have to go through this. This was the second time in eight months that she felt the pain that was being blocked by the implanted hardware in her body. She was in better shape this time, but it was still very unpleasant. She would not be receiving the new hardware that they had been manufacturing to go along with the interface. It was not that Hudai's equipment was inferior, it was just incredibly invasive and non-removable. With the new software, she would have more privacy. Everyone would. Quill Hardware allowed the privacy of turning off tracking. Nora did not have that option. Nora watched as the pretty feather animation appeared, and the operating system started its download. Nora felt a measure of pride and accomplishment. As the download and installation completed, she felt the pain in her leg, lower back and shoulders disappear. Nora sighed with relief. She opened up her interface with a huge smile.
"Beat you Sirona." Nora teased, as she turned her head and looked down at her five-year-old daughter.
"Talan, you said you started us at the same time," Sirona said. Before Talan could answer back
"It started for everyone all at once. I saw it." Astra explained, looking at Sirona inquisitively.
"Mommy needed to sit because of her pain, does it hurt for you too Sirona?" Astra asked.
"No. I just wanted to be here for Mommy just in case she needed a hug and kiss." Sirona said. Nora turned to hug Sirona as she said this.
"Now that you mention it I do need a hug and kisses Sirona!" Nora said as she pulled her into a hug and planted a kiss on her forehead. Astra scouched closer to her mother and embraced her mother as well.
"Pretty." Kelly called out reaching for the feather that signified the launch of the Operating system. The images spun in public viewing mode in front of all of them. It looked like feathers falling in a graceful spiral. Kelly reached out her hands. The feather disappeared in a sparkle and another animation started. Kelly giggled in amusement.
Talan smiled at the scene. Though he was anxious to start testing the features with them, he enjoyed this. They were still a week from launching it to the public officially. The Quills had unilaterally decided to recycle the equipment already running Hudai Tech software as the government was anxious for results while they constructed their own additional hardware. This meant that there were offices to go back to for employees and housing available. Sage was already the heir to the Hudai properties and now, as heir to Clan Noro, gave Nora and, by proxy, the Quills the power to quickly make the arrangements. Talan, however, could not go back to that building. This left testing done on the physical interfaces done at Quill Technologies and at home. In the future, he would level the Hudai building and build a home for his children to inherit, as the clan name of Hudai would be noted as dying with Lara as the last Matriarch of the family. There was no way Sage would hold the name anymore, nor would Rex.
"So far, it feels like I have more feeling in the skin of my leg than before. Is it still going to numb as much when we have our next child?" Nora asked, noticing the difference in her right leg.
"All the same functionality is there, it is just a bit more intuitive and takes advantage of the hardware. It interrupts pain signals without sacrificing all physical sensation." Talan said, proud of his work. "There were advances in programming that were hidden from my parents and others dismissed by them in the past. The health features were always left to me, you will find them more robust. We will need to discuss other tools in the evening and take a vote. Since we are the first users," Talan finished. Nora looked at Talan with a speculative gaze.
"Mine is all done now." Sirona gave Talan a big smile.
"Mine too. I wish I had all my pages saved." Astra said, her blue eyes locked on the new display. Her fingers moved quickly as she moved to the education resources to mark her places again.
"You just like to use it and gloat that you are ahead of me. But you do not help with the babies like I do," Sirona said, shrugging.
"Go play, instead of sitting looking at stories. Why not pretend that you are Barali like in the book we are reading?" Nora said as she worried about her. Astra was reserved, calm and very shy. When they visited Allari, Allurai had mentioned how different she was from the others. Amrita mentioned that Kadir was a very timid child. But Nora knew that Astra took after her and saw herself in her. She knew why it bothered her. She had lost her childhood later to her intellect.
"Sirona, helping others is great. But do not forget yourself too." Nora looked at her helpful and sensitive Sirona. She took on so much responsibility for the younger children. She was far too mature for her age. The other children saw their fathers more often, so she must of felt like an outcast or not like a child at all. Nora tried to make up for it. Liem did spend time with her on his leave, but he was falling back into his old habits again.
"I just got this Mommy, I want to see it." Astra whined.
"Mommy and your Fathers, have to test it out, but you can go play with your sisters for now. We will definitely need you later.", Nora lied in an authoritative voice.
"You hear that Astra, go play with your sisters now." Kadir said firmly, supporting her lie. He knew that Talan had to go through some of the features with them and the children would hold this up. Astra looked at her father with doubt in her eyes and reluctantly left to play with her younger siblings.
"You too, Sirona," Liem said as well. Sirona gave them a reluctant look but complied like her sister and ran off to the playroom. Nora looked at Liem. Sirona did not need to go anywhere. They were all trying to support Nora in her parenting decisions, hoping that she still might consider artificial gestation. Her recent cycles had been more intense as she came into her prime. As she gained more weight she had filled out sumptuously. Her breasts had become larger, her buttocks and hips had followed suit. That, combined with how she smelled while she was ovulating, was a test of their resolve to persuade her. Liem pried his eyes off of her, catching himself. Nora smiled shyly when she noticed her spouses shifting their gazes away from her.
Talan began his tutorial as they all listened eagerly and tested each feature live. The screen or viewer privacy was a feature that Nora suggested. Now that she saw it in action, she proposed that it not be enabled until someone reaches adulthood. Since it was displayed in a type of augmented reality view, not having a screen viewable to others at all times would cut down on the processing power needed and save resources. More gesture controls were added to allow for sharing. When the new educational tools were being reviewed, Talan paused his lesson and began to speak with seriousness.
"This is an alternate tool that, if added, could have some ethical implications. Imagine if learning was made as easy as it was for a Droid, that you could download and upload new knowledge in seconds, eliminating the need for physical schooling." Talan proposed nervously.
"You cannot be proposing what I think you are proposing?" Cerez said.

"Yes, years ago, when I was working with my team in Hudai Medical Programming, we were attempting a solution to knowledge loss and the preservation of memories. We were very successful in backing up knowledge and accessing the memories of a teammate. It just requires another injection to increase the storage capacity of the implant that sits on the cluster between the hemispheres of the brain and uses the prebuilt inputs through the optic nerves to input the knowledge." Talan finished.
"Essentially, what you are saying is that it is possible to not only backup a mind, but you were able to share the knowledge? What happens if you download a whole person into the body of a clone infant with no collective experiences or knowledge? Does that mean that someone could in essence live another life?" Nora asked. Nora felt a sense of excitement and fear. She was excited to look at the programming and see if it would work.
'Would trying this be ethical? What would this unleash on this already fractured society?' Nora thought. "I could be born again and remember everything this way?' Nora mused.
"Wait, can you erase knowledge or access someone's mind without their consent?" Kai asked nervously, not waiting for an answer from Talan.
"That would be a very dangerous tool," Liem said. Talan looked at the group sitting on the couch.
