Chapter 41: 41. Shadow Hunter

41. Shadow Hunter

The whistling of the winds picked up at one of the nearby mountain peaks like a solemn tune, the roof of the trees were coated in a bed of white, their leaves weighed by their load. In the sky flew a lone silver owl with dark claws and beak, his huge beady eyes scanned the entirety of the mountain in one glance. It flew through the air like a kite riding the waves of wind gently without any disturbance it ruled the the sky with pride.

The silver owl continues to circle a certain part of the mountain for minutes eyeing a lone white fur mountain wolf that seemed to be an outcast from the pack. From the enchanted view of the owl the wolf was sitting quietly under a ledge licking it’s paw as a part of its skin care or fur care routine. It played with it’s paw for a few minutes oblivious to the shadow that darted throught the forest of trees and approach it.

There was a time the wolf raised its head and surveyed it’s environment as if sensing the shadow but after a few minutes it went back to biting at it’s paw. The shadow moved nimbly scaling through the trees like a beast running wild. The white fur mountain wolf noticed the shadow this time but it was already too late, the shadow shot forward with quick precision and crossed paths with the wolf. By the time the wolf came to its head slip off it’s body and plopped to the icy ground, a thick puddle of red formed under its now headless neck.

On sighting this from a few hundred feet in the air the owl gave a loud hoot in repetition before diving down to the scene of the crime. It’s descent was graceful and rapid, reaching the base in a matter of seconds. It hovered a few feets above the corpse of the dead beast and looked around for the dark shadow that had done this vile thing but it was gone.

From it’s blind spot the shadow shot out and pummeled the huge silver owl to the ground, the owl gave a loud hoot as it impacted the ground and looked up at its attacker who towered over it with pride. A few seconds passed in silence before the shadow burst into laughter, this annoyed the owl very much as it flew to peck it’s attackers head in a flurry of rage.

"Ow, sorry Snow. I couldn’t resist." The shadow spoke as it jumped back and moved into a defensive stance that was very over exaggerated. The owl seemed to restrain itself for the moment as it looked at its attacker in the light of day.

The attacker was a tall young boy with pale skin, curly white hair that reached down to his shoulder, angular face, handsome features, pointy ears, on his right ear was a single oval blue gem hooked to a small chain that was hanging of his earring.

He had a thick fur jacket over black inners, on his legs were a pair of thick black trousers. He had a pair of thick boots to accompany him on the icy mountain terrain. On his back was a quiver of arrows and a bow and on his side a gleaming longsword with a polished polished metallic shine, it’s handle was made of wood with beautiful etchings made on it. From the rim of the sword driped a thick red ooze.

The young male elf opened his teeth in a wide grin and pat the owl on the head as it bit at his hand causing him to bleed. The young elf pulled back and blew on the bite wound and hissed at the owl. "Dammit, Snow. I said I was sorry, what do you want from me a bigger meal?"

The owl gave another hoot as it circles over his head before deciding to perch itself on his shoulder, it’s weight was very demanding. The young elf chuckled lightly and said. "Fine, old man Thalvarin never fattened me up when I did good. Just thinking about him gives me the shivers."

The young elf shivered evidently as he moved over to the wolf with a small curved dagger to carve out huge chunks of its meat and it’s beast core. It took minutes before he came upon the small dark bead, he eyed it in the light and then sighed.

"Dammit." His hissed as he resisted the urge to send the small bead flying over the edge of the mountain. The huge silver owl poked his head with it’s beak and gave a low hoot. The young elf seemed to calm down as he gave another heavy sigh. "You’re right silver, it’s better than nothing."

He took another look at his handwork his glassy blue eyes reflecting the dead headless wolf back at him. He did not spend long there before saying back to the owl. "How long till the storm hits?"

The owl took to the sky without giving as much as a hoot. The young elf pulled his hood over his head and followed the trail the owl left. He walked on for an hour with a small satchel by his side holding the piece of meat he had taken from the dead wolf beast. He fought against the growing cold as he climbed up a large cliff, it took hours till he reached the a small gap in the cliff. This small gap was a cave that looked like it was carved open or dug by something, it did not look natural.

Wary the place might harbour a landlord he darted into the cave and stopped at its entrance. His left eye beamed with a golden light as it pierced through the blanket if darkness, after a full minute the young elf relaxed and waved to the owl as it turned and disappeared into the distance.

"Thank you for the shelter Snow, I don’t know what I would have done without you." He pulled down the hood and took out the small bead, not wasting a second more he gulped it down his throat.
