Rebirth: I became rich by farming-Chapter 28 - Bed-wetting

Chapter 28 -28 Bed-wetting
After breakfast, it was time to sell vegetables again. Midday, I would return home to eat and read, and in the evening, I worked in the space. It was the same routine for two days straight.
By Friday, our vegetable selling endeavor had come to an end. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to set up the stall for two more days, it was mainly because we planned to visit my auntie’s house over the weekend. True to form, my auntie would call us over for breakfast early in the morning, so there was simply no time for the stall.
After coming back on Friday, Mei Mengzhen did the math for the four days of selling vegetables. In the last two days alone, we made 4240 yuan, which, added to the previous 730 yuan and 1680 yuan, meant that in just four days, we had earned a total of 6650 yuan selling vegetables.
Mei Mengzhen was shocked. For the year 2007, that was a significant sum of money, and for a high school student like her, it was an impressive fortune.
Of course, this amount didn’t include Liang Xiao’s wages. Liang Xiao had helped her out for four days, which meant I had to deduct 400 yuan. But even then, there was still 6250 yuan left.
With this money, plus what my parents had left behind, I had almost 10,000 yuan on hand, not to mention the money left by grandpa. Whether for living expenses this year or for college, I temporarily didn’t need to worry about money.
As for whether to continue selling vegetables, I said I definitely would if I had the time. After all, who would complain about having too much for living expenses?
Mei Mengzhen said we would close the stall and then we just vanished, causing trouble for those who wanted to buy our vegetables. Just as they were getting used to the produce from our stall, it disappeared without warning after only a couple of days.
Mei Mengzhen was like a shadow that came without a trace and left without one too. It was hard to find her if you wanted to. Once you’ve had a taste of good vegetables, it’s difficult to go back to the ones you had before.
Of course, these were all problems for another time.
With money in my purse, I felt delighted. After dinner, I said hello to Mei Mengchen and went out briefly. I didn’t go far before bringing out a watermelon from the space and returning home.
The watermelons in the space were round and large. Every day I went into the space, I’d drool over them, but I never had a taste, and during summer, the best thing to do is eat watermelon.
I came home, went to the kitchen to cut the watermelon into pieces, and then my brother and I started enjoying it while watching TV.
Having gotten used to the delicacies from the space, my brother and I showed only a slight reaction at first when trying the watermelon before devouring it heartily.
However, the consequence of our hearty feast was that the next morning, I woke up to find that Little Chenchen had wet the bed.
At first, I didn’t notice, and seeing that Mei Mengchen’s cheeks were red, I didn’t think much of it. But it didn’t take long for me to realize what had happened, “Chenchen, you didn’t… did you?”
Mei Mengchen thought I was going to tease her and immediately got defensive: “Sister’s mean, sister’s laughing at Chenchen.”
I was wrongly accused, “When did I laugh at you? I haven’t even started yet.”
Mei Mengchen became flustered and upset, “You’re going to tease me, that’s not allowed, don’t laugh anymore.”
“Alright, alright, I won’t laugh. Hurry up and put your mattress out to dry, otherwise you won’t have anything to sleep on tonight.” I went to my brother’s bedside and started to bustle about, but Mei Mengchen wouldn’t have it. Clutching his quilt, he refused to let go, “No, no, I’ll do it myself.”
“Ah, you’ll do it yourself? How are you going to manage that? Sister isn’t making fun of you, hurry up, Auntie might call soon.”
No sooner had I spoken than Aunt Mei Yinan’s call came through, “Hello, Auntie.”
“Have you two gotten up? If so, come over for breakfast.”
“Okay, we’re up, we’ll be right there.”
I hung up and turned to my brother, “You heard her. Auntie is calling us over for breakfast. You better get washed up quickly; it’s not good to keep others waiting.”
“Then you mustn’t laugh, and you mustn’t mention this to anyone else,” Mei Mengchen now knew I was fond of him and dared to negotiate with me.
I couldn’t help but smile, “You little guy, so concerned about your image. I won’t say anything, I promise, but if you let something slip, I won’t be responsible.”
“I won’t,” Mei Mengchen retorted before going downstairs to wash up. Meanwhile, I busied myself with airing out the bedding, washing up, and changing clothes. By the time Mei Mengchen had finished, I had also wrapped up a bunch of chores. Then, I packed several apples from the space, and my brother and I, hand in hand, headed out.
After washing up in the morning, Mei Mengchen wasn’t as embarrassed as he had been at first, but seeing me, he still seemed a bit shy, “Sister, let’s not eat watermelon again tonight, okay?”
“Sure, we’ll eat something else tonight. Any fruit you’re craving?”
Mei Mengchen thought hard, “Grapes, I want grapes.”
Now that he knew I had money, he felt confident enough to voice a small request. Probably because I would have asked only if we had the money – otherwise, who’d think about eating fruit when even meals were difficult?
“Alright, we’ll have grapes tonight.”

We arrived at Auntie’s house, and before we could reach the door, it swung open, “I could hear you two coming from inside. Hurry in, the noodles are boiling.”
We quickened our pace and entered.
At Auntie’s house, besides Auntie herself, Uncle Fan Hongwei and the twins, Brother Fan Tianyu and Sister Fan Tianhua, were all at home. We greeted them one after the other, “Good morning, Auntie, Uncle, Brother Tianyu, Sister Tianhua.”
Mei Mengchen imitated me, echoing my greetings exactly.
The family brought us in, and I casually placed the fruit on the table. Auntie noticed it right away and began nagging, “Why bring things when you come over? When did you start being so formal?”
Indeed, it was the first time I had brought something over, except for holidays and special occasions, of course. Otherwise, our family would just come over to Auntie’s for meals and leave afterward, never even considering bringing gifts. Neither of my parents had the grace to bring something when visiting someone’s house.
So when I made this gesture, the four family members instantly felt a pang of sympathy for us two kids – we were just kids and already learned to bring gifts when visiting.
I did partly have that intention, but more than that, I wanted Auntie’s family to try the fruits from the space.
“It’s nothing. I noticed these fruits looked really nice while passing by, so I bought a few for everyone to try.”
Uncle also noticed their exceptional freshness and size, larger than what’s typically sold outside. Uncle Fan Hongwei asked, “These apples are huge! They weren’t cheap, were they?”
“Bought them at the vegetable market up front, ten yuan each, but they taste really good.”
As soon as I said this, Auntie exploded, “You child, buying such expensive fruit! Take them back. We’re both working here; we can afford our own fruit. You keep it and eat it yourself.”
Having already brought them, I certainly wouldn’t take them back: “There are a few more at home. These apples are especially delicious. Later, wash them and cut them up, everyone can try them.”
