Chapter 13: Chapter 8: Hoarding Ships

After dinner, Gu Yanzhi stood by the window. Though the flood outside had stopped, the heavy rain continued, and the water had risen to the height of one floor.

She opened the chat app and saw that the message count for the group of Building 10 had exceeded 99+. Gu Yanzhi scrolled up to check the messages.

As expected, everyone was discussing the sudden flood and the persistent rain, and they were also thankful that they had heeded the government's advice to relocate here in advance.

["Later, I want to stock up on some food at the supermarket. Anyone want to join? The rain seems like it will last for a long time,"] Despite discussing the heavy rain, no one in the group seemed worried it would continue for long. Gu Yanzhi thought about it and sent a message in the group.

Their lack of concern about the rain lasting indicated that the families probably hadn't stored much food. Gu Yanzhi thought it was still necessary to remind everyone.

It wasn't about being helpful; in her past life, she had seen too many fights over a packet of cookies or a sip of water. The rain could last for at least two months, and who knew what the people in the building might do if they ran out of food.

Even though the 17th and 18th floors were fortified like iron barrels, it was better to delay exposing this as long as possible, considering the difficult times.

["Me, me, me,"] Zhang Qian was the first to raise her hand, followed by two other families in the building expressing their interest to join.

["The water outside is deep. How do we get out without a boat?"] the husband from Floor 16 voiced his concern.

["Yeah,"]

["I have a rubber boat at home. We used it for fishing before. We can use it,"] Gu Yanzhi explained in the group, then arranged to meet everyone on the first floor in ten minutes.

Gu Yanzhi fetched the rubber boat and oars from storage, and along with Song Zhao and Gu Yanlin, she dragged it downstairs.

Due to the flooding, the elevator was out of order, so they had to take the stairs. When they reached the second floor, they found everyone gathered there, not moving down any further.

"Sister Yan Zhi, you're here," Zhang Qian's eyes lit up and she greeted them.

"Zhang Qian, good morning," Gu Yanzhi, who quite liked this cute girl, responded with a smile.

"Thank you, big sister,"

"Thanks a lot, big sis,"

The other two families also voiced their thanks, since it was indeed a time to be grateful that someone thought of bringing them along.

"Sis, the first floor is already flooded. How are we going to get the boat down?" Gu Yanlin walked to the staircase and looked down, only to find the first floor completely submerged, with even the door out of sight. No wonder everyone was gathered on the second floor and not going down further.

"We just asked the property management, and we can smash a second-floor window to get out," said the husband from one of the families.

Gu Yanzhi checked her phone; when they were downstairs, someone in the group had tagged the property management to ask if they could remove a window. The property management replied that it was okay, and they would send someone to repair it after the waters receded.

"That's fine, then. You guys decide who's going out first. We only have one rubber boat. It definitely won't fit everyone," Song Zhao spoke up.

Zhang Qian's family of three, the family from Floor 11, the young couple from Floor 16, plus the three of them from the stairwell, had 11 people. Fortunately, the building was quite luxurious with a spacious hallway; otherwise, it would have been too crowded.

Their rubber boat could at most fit six people; it was obvious not everyone could fit.

Actually, there wasn't much need for discussion. Everyone knew the score; it was clear they were just tagging along on Gu Yanzhi's rubber boat, and nobody would have the cheek to insist on their entire family going. It had been decided before coming downstairs: Zhang Qian's father from her family, the husband from Floor 16, and the son from the family on Floor 11 would go, because it was Gu Yanzhi's boat, so two people from her family, Gu Yanzhi and Song Zhao, would go.

They were the strongest and most able-bodied in their families, except for the grandmother from the young couple on Floor 16 who needed to stay to look after her grandson. The rest were just coming along to see the situation outside and add to the crowd.

"Mr. Song, could you first take us to the sports store? I want to buy a kayak so we can bring back more stuff," Zhang Qian's father asked, and the other families eagerly agreed.

Relying on just one rubber boat to fetch supplies for four families was unrealistic. It was better to go to the sports store first, buy a kayak, so that each family could have their own and carry more goods. They could also use it in the future.
