Rebirth of a Farming Wife-Chapter 485 - Four Hundred and Ninety-Two: Hearing the Bad News for the First Time
Chapter 485: Chapter Four Hundred and Ninety-Two: Hearing the Bad News for the First Time
Brother Xing understood everything they discussed. He knew the severity of the situation, but as he was still a child, he had to restrain himself from acting out of order. Yet, he was truly worried about Mother, who had tried to lure those people away to save Grandfather, Grandmother and their three siblings. The situation must be incredibly dangerous.
Mr. and Mrs. Su felt a tightness in their hearts upon hearing what Brother Xing said, but didn’t know how to respond. The children were so young; they couldn’t comprehend these complex issues.
“Don’t worry, Brother Xing. Your mother will definitely come back safely. Your father and we will certainly find a way to rescue her,” Master Feng said as he took over the conversation, seeing the Su couple struggling to talk to the children. He understood their feelings very well, as his own daughter and son-in-law were currently in Chang’an and could be in danger at any moment.
Brother Xing was considerate, and Brother Chen and Sister Yu were also very smart. They weren’t convinced by Master Feng’s comforting words. Instead, they asked, “Why do we need to rescue Mother? Did the bad people take her away?”
“Yes, your mother has been taken by some bad people, but we will definitely find a way to rescue her. So, you siblings need to behave and not cause more trouble for the adults, do you understand?” Madam Su was, after all, better at comforting children than the men were. Her daughter’s whereabouts were still unknown, and she needed to take care of her grandchildren in her daughter’s stead. Holding back her worries and with tears in her eyes, she softly consoled her grandchildren.
Hearing that their mother had indeed been taken by bad people, the children were filled with worry and haste, their faces filled with urgency as they nodded vigorously.
“We will be good. Grandfather and Grandmother must rescue Mother. We don’t want to be children without a mother,” Sister Yu said through her tears.
Brother Chen, being the elder brother, was a bit stronger. These recent events had made him mature quite a lot, and he remembered what Father had said: men may bleed but shouldn’t cry. Especially since Father wasn’t here, he pursed his lips and stood aside.
“Grandfather, Grandmother, I will take care of my younger brother and sister. Don’t worry about us. You must rescue Mother,” Brother Xing said firmly, all three siblings looking up at the adults with hopeful eyes, waiting for a definite answer and promise.
“Rest assured, your Grandfather would give his life if he must to rescue your mother. These are things for us adults to worry about. You are still young; just take good care of yourselves,” he replied.
“We understand. We won’t make trouble for the adults. And Grandfather, please do tell us if there is any news of Mother,” they responded.
Master Feng, looking on, felt deeply moved. “These children are so well-behaved it breaks my heart. Miss Yue is fortunate; she will certainly turn misfortune into luck and be safe,” he mused.
“Master Su, what should we do about my wife? Please advise,” Qi Shen urgently requested. With Mistress in danger and previously preoccupied with the child master’s safety, he had no choice but to follow orders and bring people back. Now that the child master was safe, Qi Shen grew increasingly worried about Mistress. With Master Su present, he did not dare make decisions on his own and wished to hear Master Su’s opinion. Roughly speaking, Master Su was a man seasoned by more salt than the meals he had eaten; he might conjure up some worthwhile strategies.
“Our belief that Lady Yue is in their hands is just speculation for now; no one knows for sure. Right now, the most important thing is to clarify Yueyue’s situation,” Master Su said after consulting with Master Feng and Qi Shen. They quickly decided on a plan to dispatch someone immediately to rescue Su Wenyue. If Su Wenyue was indeed in their clutches, they would carefully ascertain the situation and choose the opportune moment to rescue her.
The expert sent to find Su Wenyue was from Qi Shen and Master Feng’s retinue. They were just about to set out when they encountered people brought by Qi Yun, who informed them of the news that Su Wenyue had leaped off a cliff.
“What are you saying? Lady Yue jumped off a cliff?! That’s impossible; it can’t be. You must have made a mistake,” Madam Su exclaimed incredulously, staring at the secret guard who delivered the news, hoping it was a misunderstanding and unwilling to accept such dreadful news.
Master Su staggered on hearing this. The news was unbearable: “How could this be? Why would Yue act so foolishly? Even if she had been captured, it still wouldn’t lead to her jumping off a cliff.”
This was the worst possible news. The most dreadful outcome the Sus had feared was their daughter falling into their enemies’ hands—believing they could always rescue her. But now, they were told their daughter had jumped into the abyss, a blow undoubtedly devastating.
Qi Shen also found it unbelievable. “How could Madam have leaped off a cliff? I was just about to rescue her, and then I get this news. Even I can’t accept this. If the master who cherishes her deeply learns of this, what will he do?” he pondered in dismay.
The three children also heard the news. Brother Chen and Sister Yu immediately burst into tears.
Brother Xing stood there numbly, recalling every moment he had spent with his mother. He seemed almost in a daze, unable to weep.
How could this happen? In this life, he had been so content and happy, blessed with such a wonderful mother. Yet, overnight, he was once again childless. Why was fate so cruel? Having regained his mother only to lose her again was more brutal than never having her at all. He had already grown to cherish her warmth.
“Could it be that those murderers did something to Lady Yue, prompting her to make such a desperate decision? That foolish child, what could be more important than life? Even if… should the son-in-law have concerns, our Su family would still take care of her. How could she be so shortsighted?” Madam Su, being her daughter, approached the issue differently, feeling that her daughter had done something so foolish because of her reputation.
“Those people wanted to use Madam to coerce the master, but she didn’t want the master to be threatened. That’s why she chose to jump. Madam did it for the master,” said the guard, with a mix of compassion and admiration on his face.
“It can’t be, Mother would never do that,” Brother Xing shook his head, refusing to accept it. How had things escalated this far? He couldn’t comprehend.
Because of his memories from his previous life, although his mother had been very kind to him in this life, Brother Xing was still somewhat affected, deep down feeling that his mother was a selfish woman. Even though she had changed in this life, he never expected her to do something like this. He always assumed that since she had arranged for them to leave first, she must have had a contingency plan. At the very worst, being in the hands of those people, grandfather and father would surely rescue them. But things hadn’t turned out as he had hoped. In the last life, his mother who had abandoned his father, now sacrificed her life for him in this one. If this was the case, Brother Xing would have preferred his mother to be selfish and self-serving, as it would have been easier than facing the loss of her now.
