Chapter 294: Chapter 294 Extra: Painful Past (1)

That year Ji Tingyang was seven, his parents said they were going out to take care of some business and asked him to stay at home and look after his younger brother and sister.

Ji Tingyang sat on the couch, cradling a cup in his hands and took a sip of milk, his lips still frothy, nodding earnestly, “Mom, don’t worry, I’ll definitely take good care of my brother and sister.”

Lin Xu came over to wipe the milk foam from his mouth, wanting to ruffle her son’s head before leaving, but he dodged to the side.

“Mom, I’m already grown up; you can’t touch my head anymore or the teacher will laugh at me,” Ji Tingyang said seriously.

“Alright, alright, our Tingyang is a big kid now, Mom can’t just ruffle your head anymore,” Lin Xu lowered her head, pretending to wipe away nonexistent tears from her eyes.

Ji Tingyang panicked for a moment but quickly realized, “Mom, you’re not even crying.”

Caught in the act, Lin Xu wasn’t embarrassed, instead, she gave him a sly smile, “Okay, Mom and Dad are heading out, goodbye.”

Watching Lin Xu and Ji Yanli wave goodbye, turn to leave, get in the car…

As the sound of the car starting up rose, it sped away.

An ear-splitting cry resounded from the second floor’s bedroom, and Ji Tingyang quickly finished his milk and ran upstairs to soothe his sister.

But after only a few minutes, Ji Zeqiu woke up too, running around the room looking for Mom.

With no other choice, Ji Tingyang went out to find Ji Zeqiu, “Mom and Dad have gone out; they won’t be back until the evening.”

“I want to go with Mom,” Ji Zeqiu said, his eyes still clinging onto teetering tears.

“Mom will be back soon, let’s go play with sister first,” Ji Tingyang took Ji Zeqiu’s hand and walked into their sister’s bedroom.

The two children stretched up on their toes, leaning over the crib, giggling as they teased their sister inside.

Ji Lanyue grabbed onto a finger and laugh gurgled out.

Outside, the night grew dark and glaring incandescent lights came on all around the villa.

Ji Tingyang spent the whole day at home entertaining his sister until darkness fell outside and finally, there was some activity at the front door.

His eyes lit up for a moment, and he came down from the second floor, his cheeks stiffening as he nearly reached the door, “Mom, why are you guys so late…”

However, when the door opened, the people entering were not Lin Xu but Tang Biquin and Mr. Lin.

Their faces were drawn and dazed, and if Ji Tingyang observed closely, he could see their reddened eyes.

Seeing the two of them, Ji Tingyang was stunned for a moment, dutifully greeting his grandparents. Then he craned his neck to look behind them.

Nobody was there.

“What are you looking at, Tingyang?” Tang Biquin asked.

“I’m looking to see if Mom and Dad are back yet; they promised they would be back by evening. Sister has cried so many times,” Ji Tingyang said.

Tang Biquin’s expression suddenly turned sour, her eyes flickered, “They unexpectedly got held up with other things and couldn’t return, so Grandpa and Grandma came to keep you company.”

Ji Tingyang’s little face immediately scrunched up, his voice accusingly wheedling, “Mom lied to me again; they said they’d be back tonight and that they would bring me a toy.”

Tang Biquin turned away her head, her eyes growing red again.

“I’m going to call and ask Mom,” Ji Tingyang pulled out his phone watch, scrolling to Lin Xu’s name.

Mr. Lin hastily stopped his hand, “The two of them are out on a date; better not to call and disturb them.”

Remembering times he had interrupted his mom and dad’s kisses, Ji Tingyang recalled his dad’s ice-cold, stern face, frightening enough to make his little heart shudder.

Alright.

Still, no phone call.

Wait till Mom comes back tomorrow, and then he’ll talk about the toy.

He muttered to himself and turned back to the living room.

Tang Biquin and Mr. Lin exchanged glances, pain flashing simultaneously in both of their eyes.

They didn’t know how to break the news to the child honestly or whether to keep it a secret, letting them understand naturally when they grow up…

Because of this matter, Tang Biquin didn’t sleep well all night. When she woke up the next day, there were dark circles under her eyes.

As she came downstairs, Mr. Lin was already at the dining table having breakfast with the children.

“Grandma, did you not sleep well last night, too? Are you missing Mom like I am?” Ji Zeqiu’s young face furrowed with worry.

Ji Zeqiu was still at the age of being attached to his mother, needing Lin Xu to tell him a bedtime story before he could fall asleep.

Although last night, Grandpa also told him a bedtime story, it wasn’t as smooth and pleasant as Mom’s, often stopping for no reason and rubbing his eyes.

Ji Zeqiu looked on, puzzled, “Grandpa, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing, just something got into my eye,” Mr. Lin’s voice was a bit hoarse.

“Grandpa, if you’re sleepy, you can go to sleep. I don’t need a story,” Zeqiu thought he was just tired, continually rubbing his eyes.

Hearing his grandson’s considerate words, Mr. Lin’s eyes turned sore again, and he shook his head, “It’s okay, Grandpa will continue the story.”

Ji Zeqiu suppressed the urge to call Lin Xu and continued listening to Mr. Lin’s bedtime story.

But when he got up the next day and still hadn’t seen Lin Xu, his eyes immediately reddened, “Grandma, can you call Mom and ask them to come back soon?”

Tang Biquin’s voice was strained, “Okay, I’ll call them later.”

But Ji Tingyang and Ji Zeqiu waited day after day and didn’t see Lin Xu and Ji Yanli return.

After three days, Ji Zeqiu couldn’t hold back any longer; the unease in his heart exploded.

His tears burst forth, falling with a pitter-patter, “Is it because I’m not good, picky with food? Does Mom not want me anymore?”

Even the usually calm Ji Tingyang teared up, desperately holding back, not daring to cry.

“That’s not possible; how could they not want Zeqiu? It’s just something urgent came up, and they can’t come back for now,” Tang Biquin pulled out tissues to wipe the children’s tears.

Mr. Lin sighed and reluctantly averted his gaze.

Right at that moment, there came a loud banging on the door, annoyingly loud.

Mr. Lin frowned and got up to open the door.

As soon as the door was opened, a heavily made-up woman pushed her way in.

“Who are you? Why are you barging into someone’s house?” Mr. Lin shouted.

“Me?” The woman walked straight to the sofa and sat down, “I’m Ji Yanli’s sister.”

“Didn’t he die in a car accident? He must have left quite a lot of money, right? I’ve spoken to a lawyer, and since I’m related to him, by rights, I should get some inheritance. I’m here today to ask for money,” the woman revealed her intention clearly.

Tang Biquin’s heart suddenly tightened, and before she could take her grandchildren back to their room, she heard Ji Tingyang stammer, “Dad is dead?”
