Rebirth! The Assassin's Revenge-Chapter 444: A Simple Favor
On the way, I drove Man Qianshan back to school; the girl in a dress waved at me and only entered the school gates after watching my car leave.
In the rearview mirror, Gu Ningyue watched that lively, youthful figure fade away, then silently took out her phone and called Ling Tianyou: "Hello?"
"Missing me after just two or three hours apart?" Ling Tianyou, on the other end of the screen, had a playful smile.
Gu Ningyue played along: "Yes! I miss you. Are you busy now?"
Ling Tianyou glanced at the mountain of documents piled on his desk, yet he said to Gu Ningyue: "Not busy, what’s up?"
Gu Ningyue shared with Ling Tianyou some information she’d just heard from Man Qianshan, then continued: "Is it true that the support behind Jin Chenglong has given up on him? Could there still be secret connections, and they’re still shielding him?"
Ling Tianyou was silent for a moment: "The chances are slim. Jin Chenglong’s support was because he managed the demolition in City A, where they wanted to profit. Now that he has lost his usefulness, they wouldn’t care for those dubious earnings. Protecting him now, I don’t think they’d do it. Besides, last time, those involved were already dealt with or demoted. The situation has only just past this storm. Unless they really don’t want to continue, they wouldn’t collude with Jin Chenglong anymore."
Gu Ningyue nodded. She thought Ling Tianyou had a point, but couldn’t help asking a question: "But what if... Jin Chenglong has dirt on one of them? What if they have no choice but to help and cover for him?"
Ling Tianyou paused: "That’s a possibility... Where are you now?"
Gu Ningyue replied: "Driving, heading home. What about you?"
"I’m still at the office." Ling Tianyou thought for a moment: "Be safe. I’ll have someone look into this first. Don’t act rashly. Wait until I get home tonight, and we’ll plan further."
Gu Ningyue agreed, and for the first time, she willingly asked: "Are you coming back for lunch?"
Ever since they had been honest with each other, the old atmosphere of subtle wariness vanished like smoke.
They felt like a real couple, without that sense of boundaries that could turn them into strangers at any moment.
"Do you want me to come back to have lunch with you?" Ling Tianyou asked with a smile.
Gu Ningyue looked at the red light ahead and countered: "What do you think?"
"I guess you don’t want me to." Ling Tianyou deliberately said,
Gu Ningyue paused, "Then you guessed wrong."
Ling Tianyou felt a sweet sensation in his heart, but when he glanced at the unfinished documents, he couldn’t help but feel a headache: "I’ll come back for lunch with you tomorrow. There’s too much to do at the office today, not enough time. Ask Aunt Zhang to make you some fish!"
Gu Ningyue nodded: "Don’t worry! I certainly won’t skimp on myself."
After chatting aimlessly with Ling Tianyou for a bit, Gu Ningyue ended the call.
Returning to the villa, Gu Ningyue instructed Aunt Zhang on what she wanted for lunch, mentioning that Ling Tianyou wouldn’t be back, then headed upstairs.
As soon as she closed the door, Gu Ningyue turned on her computer.
The email inbox was empty; Lin Ruixian hadn’t sent any messages.
She logged into WeChat, intending to message her mentor but then felt a sudden impulse and first opened her mentor’s Moments.
She held onto a sliver of hope—maybe her mentor had shared photos of her there?
Or perhaps, there’d be group photos!
But unfortunately, it was empty, unclear whether she was blocked or if nothing had been posted at all.
With no other choices, Gu Ningyue racked her brains on how to approach her mentor to ask for a photo from her past.
Her past self was gone, and her current identity was a stranger to her mentor.
Though her habits and lifestyle resembled her past self, earning some favor from her mentor, she was sure her rational mentor wouldn’t take these as a reason to further their relationship.
After thinking for a long time, Gu Ningyue’s eyes brightened suddenly; the childhood photos she found in the old house could be useful.
After saying a quick greeting to Xia Yingbai, Gu Ningyue closed the chat window and set it aside, then began investigating Jin Chenglong.
After a half-hour of work, Gu Ningyue finally found some clues amidst Jin Chenglong’s years of activities: "Didn’t realize Jin Chenglong had such a hobby."
The thought of Jin Chenglong playing rugby with a beer belly made Gu Ningyue inexplicably amused.
"Ding-dong——"
Just then, a WeChat chat window lit up.
Gu Ningyue’s heart suddenly sped up. She opened the chat window, but disappointment clouded her eyes—it was Man Qianshan.
"Master, are you home?"
Gu Ningyue: "Mm."
After a while, Man Qianshan sent a picture of a small cake: "I made it for lunch, and the timing was just right. Next time, I’ll bring it to you, Master!"
Gu Ningyue: "Alright."
Gu Ningyue: "Next time."
She closed the chat window, looking at her mentor’s unresponsive name. Doubts crept in—would her words cause any problems?
Usually confident, in front of her mentor, she was filled with insecurity. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
After what seemed like ages, Xia Yingbai still hadn’t replied. Just as Gu Ningyue was about to shamelessly approach her mentor again, "Ding-dong——" Xia Yingbai replied.
Gu Ningyue couldn’t help but smile, relieved that her mentor responded.
Gu Ningyue organized her thoughts and typed a message in the chat window.
A moment later, an old photo was sent over.
Looking at her past self, Gu Ningyue inexplicably felt her eyes misting.
Soon after, Gu Ningyue stood up, went to the guest room, and took photos of her childhood pictures with her phone to send to her mentor.
"Ding-dong——"
Xia Yingbai sent a message: "Why is Miss Gu so concerned about my deceased student?"
Gu Ningyue had anticipated Xia Yingbai would ask this and brushed it off with a prepared excuse, then continued sorting through Jin Chenglong’s materials.
After all, no matter what reason she gave, her mentor would never believe it.
"Ding-dong——"
Xia Yingbai: "Regardless of Miss Gu’s reasons, since you found this photo and informed me, I am grateful."
Gu Ningyue smiled faintly, "You’re too kind, Teacher. It was just a small effort!"
With this statement, she didn’t deceive her mentor; it was indeed just a small effort!
