Rebirth: The Comeback of the Girl-Chapter 7 - Fairy Tale
Chapter 7: Chapter 7 Fairy Tale
Zhen Yu was just about to push the door, when Han Jiayang's voice came from not far beside her, "Why are you here so early? Can't wait to see my brother, huh?"
...You little brat! Aren't you thinking too much...
Even if I was really planning to cultivate a relationship with my childhood sweetheart, I wouldn't be so impatient! Han Mingyue is only thirteen now...
Zhen Yu just turned her head and glanced in Han Jiayang's direction, then pushed the door open without hesitation, and closed it behind her.
Han Jiayang, left outside the door, raised his eyebrows, tried to push the door but couldn't open it, and had no choice but to shout through the door: "Hey! Zhen Yu, why are you not answering me?"
Zhen Yu stood inside, gripping the doorknob with her right hand, silent.
Han Jiayang twisted the doorknob a few times, called out several times, but since there was no response from inside, he grumbled and turned to leave.
Han Mingyue had been sitting at the desk the whole time, staring at Zhen Yu since she entered the room, and didn't react even as the noise outside faded away, obviously stupefied.
Zhen Yu let go of the doorknob, turned around, and saw the boy with a blank stare.
She tiptoed over, circled behind him, pulled out the volume of "Andersen's Complete Fairy Tales" she had been reading yesterday from the bookshelf, and started to read it, sitting on a nearby chair.

When Han Mingyue came to, he found the room so quiet that you could hear a pin drop, and the girl's figure was missing from the doorway.
Upon turning his head, he saw her sitting not too far away, engrossed in reading, like a breathing statue.
Han Mingyue hurriedly gathered his thoughts and also bent his head to continue reading his own book.
Every time Zhen Yu finished a short story, she would glance at the small clock, estimating her reading speed.
Around 11 o'clock, she closed the book and laid it on her lap, stretching herself.
Han Mingyue looked up at the clock, "You still have time to read another story."
"?," Zhen Yu blinked, puzzled, looking at him.
"You take about half an hour per story. What time do you want to go home? I'll set the alarm for you this afternoon."
"Okay!" Zhen Yu agreed but stood up anyway and put the book back on the shelf without continuing to read it.
Seeing this, Han Mingyue also laid his book on the desk and said, "Girls like to read fairy tales, don't they?"
"Is that so? They all like to read those cruel and dark stories?" Zhen Yu looked up at him, her pitch-black eyes had a chilling vibe, as if they could see through people's souls.
Suddenly, Zhen Yu curled one corner of her mouth, her expression inexplicably a bit wicked.
Blinking again to take another look, she had restored her expressionless face, and uttered a few words lightly, "Just kidding, I'm gonna go now."
Only when the sound of the bedroom door closing echoed, did Han Mingyue finally come back to his senses.
He pondered for a moment, then pulled out the fairy tale book Zhen Yu had just been reading from the bookshelf.
After Zhen Yu got home, she continued to work on her summer homework amongst her brother's quiet complaints, until she heard Mrs. Zhen calling for dinner, then she put down her pen.
"Xiao Yu, after your afternoon nap, go to Uncle Han's house, we're inviting their whole family for dinner tonight!" Mrs. Zhen said while eating.
"Okay." Zhen Yu agreed readily.
Zhen Yan had just called out "Mom," when he was cut off by Mrs. Zhen, "You are not allowed to go anywhere today!"
Zhen Yan looked down dejectedly and continued to eat, Mrs. Zhen spoke again, "After the nap, come with me to buy groceries and cooked food! And wine! I can't carry it all by myself."
She looked at Zhen Yu again, "Just deliver the message and come back, help your mom wash the vegetables, cut the cooked food and such, be a little helper!"
Zhen Yu still quickly agreed, "Got it."
Seeing the children obedient, Mrs. Zhen was satisfied after finishing the meal, didn't ask for their help with the cleanup, and sent the siblings back to the bedroom.
Zhen Yan and Zhen Yu actually studied and lived in the same room, but Zhen Yan's single bed was placed near the south window, while Zhen Yu's single bed was placed near the north wall, with curtains in front of both the bed and the sleeping platform.
At this moment, Zhen Yu was lying behind the curtains, studying her system. The ability points/knowledge points had already become 0/70. She found that the increase in these points was not only related to time but also to the content of the books.
She could earn 4 to 5 points per hour doing summer homework, but 10 points for reading fairy tales. It seemed that she should read more extracurricular books in the future. She also needed to try reading books beyond her age to see if she could earn points faster.
While contemplating these thoughts, her brother's voice suddenly came through, "Xiao Yu! Xiao Yu!"
"Speak!"
"...?" Her sudden change to an impassive and taciturn demeanor caught Zhen Yan off guard.
"Help me beg for mercy, just for today! I really want to have a water fight!"
"You want to go to the river?"
For some reason, Zhen Yan heard a fierce undertone in his sister's four words and quickly denied, "No, no, no! Play with water guns!"
"...Okay."
After waking up, Zhen Yu went to Uncle Han's house to inform them, and Mr. Han readily agreed.
The two families were so close that even if the event of him saving Zhen Yan hadn't occurred, they often invited each other for a family meal without pretending to be overly courteous.
"Aunt Han, you're really beautiful!" Zhen Yu looked up and saw Mrs. Han walking out from the bedroom. As she got up to greet her, the compliment slipped out.
Mrs. Han was an accountant at the transshipment station, mostly worked in an office, and time hadn't left marks on her face. Even after having two sons, she had maintained her figure well.
Now being seriously praised by Zhen Yu, she couldn't help but laugh, "Hehe... Xiao Yu! You left early yesterday, I was still at work. It's been a long time since you visited our house! Remember to come more often in the future!"
Zhen Yu pursed her lips and nodded, not remembering why she had 'not come for a long time' to the Han Family, but what was past didn't need to be dwelled upon now.
Mrs. Han patted Zhen Yu's head, "Aunt's going to work now, you go play with the two brothers!"
"Okay." Zhen Yu nodded.
As Mrs. Han walked to the door, Mr. Han's voice rose from the side, "You go straight to Hailong's place after work tonight, he's treating!"
"Okay! I got it."
Zhen Yu went straight to knock on Han Mingyue's door. After two knocks, the door was pulled open from inside.
Zhen Yu stood at the door without going in and told Han Mingyue, who had stepped aside, "My family is hosting, so I can't read books this afternoon. See you tonight."
Han Mingyue was only momentarily stunned before she called her in, "Come in first!"
Just as Zhen Yu was about to turn and leave, she hesitated at the words and entered the room.
"Sit!" Han Mingyue pulled up a chair for Zhen Yu in front of her while she sat at the desk.
"..." No! Why does it look like a setup for a heart-to-heart conversation?
I still have things to do, things...events...
"After you left, I read two fairy tales, 'The Little Mermaid' and 'The Ugly Duckling'," Han Mingyue said on her own.
Zhen Yu nodded without speaking.
"You said it was cruel, I could see that. But where does the darkness come from?"
"Is that your question?" Zhen Yu felt somewhat headachy. Hadn't she inadvertently disclosed some negative thoughts at the time and already told him she was joking? Why was he still taking it seriously?
"Mhm!"
