Chapter 264: We doubt

Kira’s death didn’t just shock Anna and Daniel; it rippled outward, hitting everyone close to her.

When Mariam arrived at the station and heard the news, the color drained from her face instantly. Her knees buckled, and Anna had to hold her as she broke down in disbelief.

Her niece, Kira... gone in such a brutal, unexpected way.

The confirmation came soon after. The body was indeed Kira’s. But the police still weren’t convinced it was suicide.

The inspector spoke carefully, his tone respectful yet grim. "There are... discrepancies."

Anna lifted her head, tears blurring her vision. "Discrepancies?"

The officer nodded. "Yes. There were marks—deep ones—around her wrists and ankles. The kind that come from being tied or restrained. They’re fresh. Not old scars."

Mariam covered her mouth, a silent sob escaping.

Daniel’s jaw flexed, his expression darkening.

The officer continued, "If she had taken her own life, she wouldn’t have those binding marks. Someone tied her up at some point before she died."

Anna felt cold all over. Her heartbeat pounded in her ears.

"Tied...?" she repeated, voice trembling.

The officer hesitated before adding, "And there was bruising on her legs. Signs of struggle."

Daniel’s hands clenched at his sides, knuckles turning white.

"So you don’t think she killed herself," Daniel said flatly.

The inspector exchanged a glance with his team. "We’re not ruling suicide out. But..." His voice lowered. "The evidence suggests she may have been held captive shortly before her death."

Anna’s breath hitched painfully, a mixture of grief, horror, and anger ripping through her.

"Kira would never hurt herself," she whispered. "Someone... someone did this. Someone hurt her."

Mariam sobbed harder, leaning into Anna for support.

Daniel placed a steady hand on Anna’s back, but his eyes were fixed on the officers—sharp, calculating, already piecing things together.

"So find out who," he said quietly, his voice calm only because he was holding back a far darker rage.

The inspector nodded solemnly.

Anna closed her eyes, a wave of guilt crashing over her staring at Mariam who couldn’t control her tears.

"Are you sure your mother didn’t know Kira? I mean, why would she go after her if she held no grudge?" the officer asked gently. It was the same question he had asked Roseline earlier that day when he went to disclose the updated findings.

Since Roseline was still recovering, he had personally gone to visit her—to inform her of the new evidence and to verify her version of events.

Anna pressed her lips together, then shook her head firmly.

Roseline had only met Kira once—that brief moment when she came to deliver the potion. Nothing more. No messages. No grudges. No hidden connection.

The officer sighed, nodding with a troubled expression.

"Then I’m certain she wasn’t acting alone—and whoever was using her... discarded her the moment she became useless."

His words struck both Daniel and Anna like a punch.

They exchanged a sharp, meaningful glance before turning back to the officer and nodding quietly.

The meeting ended shortly after, leaving behind a heavier silence than when it began.

Mariam left in another car, still shaken and pale.

Daniel and Anna slipped into theirs, the weight of grief and unanswered questions resting between them.

Neither spoke. Not a word.

The officer’s warning replayed in Anna’s mind like an echo she couldn’t escape.

She wasn’t alone. She was discarded. Kira didn’t kill herself.

Anna’s fingers curled tightly in her lap. Her chest tightened as fear clawed up her heart.

If Kira really was involved in the attack on her mother, she would never take her own life—not unless someone made her... or ordered her to. Someone who had power. Someone she feared.

The realization crashed into Anna so suddenly that her breath hitched.

Her eyes widened.

"You’re thinking something?" Daniel’s voice cut through the silence, making her jump in her seat.

She turned toward him with startled eyes. He didn’t miss a thing.

Daniel narrowed his gaze, studying her face. "I know that look. You figured something out. Just say it."

Was he watching me this whole time? she wondered, taking in the way he leaned against the window, fist under his jaw, observing her like he could read her thoughts.

Anna wasn’t supposed to talk. Not yet. Not until her mother was well enough to explain everything.

But things were no longer simple. They weren’t dealing with a runaway girl anymore. They were dealing with someone who had killed Kira, staged her death, and was possibly tied to the Bennett family.

And how was she supposed to ignore what she had discovered about her mother looking for someone?

There was no way she could just discard it now. No way she could stay silent. Especially not with Kira dead—and the real puppet master still out there.

"Hehe, you’re funny," Anna said with an awkward smile, hoping to wiggle out of the conversation.

Daniel didn’t so much as blink.

"And you’re not." His voice was flat. Unamused. Too sharp.

He leaned a little closer. "Now come on, wifey—tell me what’s in that brain of yours before I make you spill it."

"..."

Anna stared at him.

Was... was that a threat? Or just Daniel being Daniel now that he had thoroughly destroyed her legs last night?

Her lips twitched in disbelief. "You’re being too direct, husband. I am fragile right now."

Daniel remained completely unfazed. He only lifted his chin slightly, giving her the speak-now look that always made her want to either punch him or hide.

"Talk," he said simply.

Anna huffed and looked away, hugging her arms.

But Daniel wasn’t just being stubborn—his mind was elsewhere too. While she hesitated, he silently sifted through the information he’d gathered earlier... the name that kept echoing in his head.

Collin Fort.

A man whose involvement seemed casual on paper, who had too many convenient alibis, who appeared in reports around the Bennett family far more often than coincidence allowed.

Daniel wasn’t sure yet—but something felt wrong. Terribly wrong.

The Bennetts had secrets. And Collin Fort seemed tangled in them.

If Kira had been "discarded," then someone was pulling strings behind the scenes. Someone with reach, and motive.

Daniel snapped back to Anna, whose silence told him she was thinking the same thing... or close.

He narrowed his eyes.

"Anna," he said softly but firmly, "whatever you’re hiding... whatever thought scared you just now—tell me."

She swallowed hard.
