Chapter 552: We verify every detail

Collin was not someone she could afford to provoke. Not now. Not when too many things were already in motion. She understood him well enough to know that when he drew a line, he meant it.

"I have no intention of ruining anything," she said more carefully this time. "I am not careless."

"I hope not," Collin replied.

Silence settled between them.

Roseline straightened her posture, regaining her composure. She had worked too hard to secure Hugo’s trust again. She would not allow doubt to interfere with it.

But even as she reassured herself, Collin’s words echoed in her mind.

Not an easy person to deal with.

She knew that was true.

And she had no desire to test it.

While Roseline and Collin carried on their tense conversation, unaware of unseen ears, someone else was listening to every single word.

It was Hugo.

Seated inside his study, the door closed and the lights dimmed, he remained perfectly still as the audio transmitted through the small device he had planted earlier. Every sentence, every shift in tone, every pause heavy with implication reached him clearly.

Confusion. Caution. Threat.

He heard it all.

His jaw tightened as Collin’s voice echoed through the speaker.

If things do not go as we planned...

Planned.

The word repeated in Hugo’s mind like a slow, deliberate strike.

Roseline’s voice followed, defensive at first, then controlled. She reassured Collin. She spoke of handling Hugo, of trust, of everything returning to normal.

Normal.

Hugo leaned back in his chair, his fingers steepled beneath his chin. His expression remained composed, but his eyes were far from calm.

So this was what lay beneath the surface.

Not reconciliation.

Not coincidence.

A plan.

The realization did not explode into rage the way it might have once. Instead, it settled into something colder. Sharper.

Calculated.

He has thought he knew Roseline enough, but to his surprise she was the most meticulious person he had ever encounter in his life.

And now that she was back joining hands with the man who almost killed her back then, it made it clear that he just couldn’t trust her.

As Hugo continued to ponder, Collin’s warning lingered in his mind. I am not an easy person to deal with.

A faint, humorless smile curved Hugo’s lips.

Neither am I.

Anger burned in his chest, but he refused to let it consume him. Anger clouded judgment, and he needed clarity now more than ever.

What unsettled him more than the apparent betrayal was the tone beneath it. There had been strategy in their words. Coordination. An understanding that he was being maneuvered.

That realization made him conscious of something else.

How long had this been happening?

How long had he been observed, calculated, adjusted to?

He rose slowly from his chair and walked toward the large window of his study. The city stretched beyond the glass, calm and unaware of the silent war brewing beneath polished smiles.

Roseline believed she had regained his complete trust.

Collin believed he was prepared for any outcome.

Hugo’s reflection stared back at him in the glass, calm and unreadable.

They thought they were ahead.

But now he was aware.

And awareness shifted everything.

If they were planning something, he would let them continue. He would not confront them. Not yet. He would watch. He would listen. He would allow them to feel secure.

Because nothing revealed a strategy faster than false confidence.

The anger inside him cooled into resolve.

Roseline had wanted things to return to normal.

Very well. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

He would give her exactly that.

Only this time, he would be the one in control.

Meanwhile, Anna received another recording.

The moment it finished playing, her eyes darted toward Daniel.

"And what are we supposed to make of this?" she asked, her voice steady but tense.

Daniel did not answer immediately. He simply shrugged, though the slight tightening of his jaw revealed that he was thinking far more than he let on.

Both of them had already agreed to keep their guard up regarding the anonymous sender. No matter how convincing the messages were, they would not lower their defenses. Not without proof. Not without understanding the motive behind it.

But this time, the recording was different.

It was not vague. It was not incomplete.

It was another private conversation between Roseline and Collin. Clear. Unedited. Intimate in a way that left no room for doubt. The tone of their voices, the tension beneath their words, even the subtle pauses had been captured perfectly.

Anna replayed a small portion of it, her expression hardening.

"He is not just guessing," she murmured. "He has access."

Daniel nodded slightly. "That much is obvious."

"And he is not using it against us," Anna added. "He is sending it to us."

That was the part neither of them could ignore.

If the anonymous person wanted leverage, blackmail, or control, there were far more effective ways to use such recordings. Instead, he was forwarding them quietly, without demands, without threats.

"He is trying to help," Anna said, more to herself than to Daniel.

Daniel glanced at her. "Or he wants us to believe that."

Anna exhaled slowly. "We already knew Roseline and Collin were planning something. This confirms it. Why would he risk exposing himself just to mislead us?"

Daniel leaned back, folding his arms. "Because positioning is power. If we begin to rely on him, even slightly, he gains influence."

Anna fell silent for a moment.

She understood Daniel’s caution. In their world, nothing came without cost. No one extended help without expecting something in return.

Yet the pattern was undeniable.

The recordings were precise. Timely. Delivered exactly when needed.

"He has not asked for anything," she pointed out again.

"Not yet," Daniel replied calmly.

Anna looked at him carefully. "You still doubt him."

"I doubt everyone whose identity I do not know," Daniel said firmly.

That answer did not surprise her.

Anna turned her gaze back to the device in her hand. The weight of it suddenly felt heavier. Somewhere, someone was watching closely enough to intercept private conversations. Close enough to understand the stakes.

And instead of exploiting it, he was feeding them information.

"That confirms one thing," Anna said finally. "He wants Roseline and Collin exposed."

Daniel’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Yes."

"And that aligns with our interest."

"For now," he corrected.

Anna met his gaze again. "Then we use the information. Carefully."

Daniel gave a small nod. "We verify every detail. We do not respond emotionally. And we never forget that an unseen ally can become an unseen enemy."

Anna accepted that.

But deep down, a quiet certainty was forming.

Whoever the anonymous sender was, he was not random.

He was deliberate.

And whether Daniel liked it or not, his actions were beginning to prove that he was not working against them.
