Rebirth: The unfavored Princess is the Tyrant King's favorite-Chapter 126: What have you done?
The empress dowager’s voice was full of anger as she directed her gaze at Lady Evelyn.
Lady Evelyn gulped in fear and embarrassment and her gaze moved towards Luciana. Right there she knew what had happened.
’She had been played’
Luciana saw Evelyn’s gaze full of accusations directed at her and acted nonchalantly.
When she woke up from her two days of unconsciousness, she noticed how Ruth was snooping around Dora and asking what gift she was preparing for the empress dowager’s birthday.
She didn’t need a magician to tell her who was behind Ruth’s curiosity—Lady Evelyn.
So she had made up the story about the vase and how a monk could write a prayer on it for good fortune and long life.
She had bet on what happened in her previous life and knew that Lady Evelyn wouldn’t check on the items herself.
She would send her maids and lackeys to do everything for her and later take credit for their hard work.
After watching Evelyn all these years, Luciana had come to a realization that she was a very competitive person, and the person she hated the most was her.
In her previous life, Evelyn hated her when she never paid any attention to Nicholas. So one could imagine how much the woman hated her now that she always made it a point to flaunt Nicholas’ favoritism for her in her face. So she decided to play Evelyn at her own game.
The truth was that the vase Lady Evelyn talked about truly existed, but she knew Evelyn would surely want to make her lose face.
To do this, she was going to instruct whomever she tasked to do her errands for her to choose the largest one.
That was why she had bribed the stall owner to give any buyer who asked for a larger vase the chamber pot.
And just as she predicted, Lady Evelyn didn’t even inspect the contents and had brought it here to embarrass herself.
’It serves her right!’
"Th...this...it wasn’t supposed to be like this...Princess Consort...you...you must have done it on purpose..."
"What did I do?" Luciana asked in a gentle voice, her gaze full of confusion. Evelyn knew Luciana was feigning it. She had set a trap for her and she had stupidly fallen into it.
She saw all eyes fixed on her and immediately fell on her knees and winced in pain before clutching her stomach as if trying to draw people’s attention to the fact that she was pregnant.
"Your Majesty, I’ve been wronged, someone must have switched my gift with the chamber pot and tried to make a mockery of me. This is not my gift. Please, you must give me justice," Evelyn said and Luciana inwardly sneered.
’Did she think she was going to get away with indirectly accusing her just like that?’
"Lady Evelyn mentioned my name a while ago and said I must have done it on purpose and then said her gift had been switched. Is the Lady indirectly trying to accuse me of switching the gifts?" Luciana asked, with an oppressive gaze causing Evelyn to panic at how intimidating her gaze looked.
"I wouldn’t dare," she said.
"Are you sure you wouldn’t dare? Lady Evelyn, you said you especially sent the vase to the temple for the monk to write a prayer for blessing and good fortune on it. If I may ask, at that time, since you saw it yourself, could you give a description of what the original vase looked like?"
Evelyn’s eyes trembled in fear at the Princess Consort’s words.
’How was she going to give a description of how the original vase looked when she hadn’t seen it before?’
"Princess Consort, please this is the birthday banquet of the empress dowager. I consider you as my sister and would never think you switched the vase to make me look bad. I know you wouldn’t resort to such trickery to make me look bad in front of Her Majesty," Evelyn said with a tear-filled gaze but her every word had a double meaning.
"Your Majesty, please forgive me for this disgrace. I’ll make sure to give you an explanation, but I’m sure whatever happened, Princess Consort is innocent. No one should blame her," she added.
Luciana nearly rolled her eyes at the woman’s pitiful show.
"Lady Evelyn is pardoned. I would make sure everyone who came into contact with her gift would be investigated and justice would be served," the empress dowager said.
From her tone, one could tell she believed Evelyn was innocent.
"Your Majesty, if I may be allowed to speak, I’d like to ask Lady Evelyn a question," Luciana said.
"Go ahead," the empress dowager said.
"Lady Evelyn, which temple did you send the vase to, and which monk wrote the prayer on the vase for you?" Luciana asked and Evelyn looked at the princess consort with glistening eyes as if she was being bullied.
"Sister, naturally, I’ll provide that information when the time is right. But please pardon me, I’ll only disclose it to those who will be in charge of the investigation," She said.
"Should I take it that you are avoiding my question on purpose? Could it be from start to finish that you never even personally inspected the gift you wanted to give the empress dowager? Or should I say you delegated all the responsibility of getting a gift to your servants and decided to claim their hard work as yours?" Luciana asked, and Evelyn gritted her teeth in anger, but outwardly, she maintained a wronged expression on her face.
"Princess Consort, don’t slander me, are you trying to say I didn’t even pay attention to what I wanted to give the empress dowager? I personally saw through everything and I know this is not what I got for the empress dowager. Why does Princess Consort want me to say otherwise?" Evelyn asked with righteous indignation.
Her voice sounded so sincere and hurt, as if she was being unjustly accused, causing everyone to instinctively believe her.
Evelyn knew it was her word against Luciana’s. Without any evidence, no one could make her confess.
"Really?..."
"I forgot to tell the empress dowager in advance since I had planned it as a surprise. Since today is an important event in the country, I especially invited all the monks in the capital to come and bless the empress dowager with their prayers and well wishes. Maybe we could ask them to come forward and see if any of them remember writing a prayer on the chamber pot?" Luciana said and Evelyn’s eyes widened in shock.
