Chapter 37: A way to break the curse

"You there, what are you standing there for? Hurry up and clean the shards before someone gets hurt," Luciana said to Ellen, who was standing at the side.

"Right away, Princess Consort," Ellen said and immediately went to collect a rubbish collector and a broom to sweep off the shards.

"Lady Evelyn, I can tell you are still badly shaken up. Is it because of something I said?" Luciana looked at her in confusion as if she were in deep thought.

"Is it about the scented petals?" Luciana asked, hitting the nail on the head, and Evelyn became paler.

"Oh, my lady Evelyn, I think I should allow you to rest; I hope you are not feeling anything weird in your body after drinking the beverage, right?" Luciana asked, causing Evelyn to nearly have a heart attack.

"What?!" Evelyn exclaimed, but when she saw how Luciana’s gaze was searching her face, she tried not to look so flustered and asked meekly.

"Why would I feel anything weird in my body? Did you put something into the food?"

"Yes," Luciana said, and Evelyn’s eyes widened in horror.

"You... what do you plan on doing to m..."

"I put lots of love into making the snacks and beverages; they are for the good health of my future baby, after all. But why is Lady Evelyn’s reaction so extreme? You didn’t think that I wanted to poison you, right?" Luciana asked, and Evelyn frantically shook her head.

"No, Princess Consort, I wouldn’t dare," Evelyn said, and Luciana stood up from her chair.

"Okay, I’ll return to my quarters so that you can rest. You look pale; you should rest," Luciana said took steps towards the entrance, and paused, turning to look at Evelyn.

"Won’t you see me off? Someone would think you find me an eyesore," Luciana said in the latter part of her sentence in a low voice as if she was mumbling under her breath but deliberately made her voice sound loud enough for Evelyn to hear.

"I’m right behind you, princess consort," Lady Evelyn said and stood up. ’Wasn’t she the one who told her to rest? Why was she asking her to see her off again?’ Evelyn thought, inwardly fuming about Luciana’s show of power, but outwardly, she tried to maintain her fake smile that was faltering by the second.

When they reached the door, Evelyn was about to bid Luciana farewell when she beat her to it and spoke first.

"Lady Evelyn, I want to introduce you to someone very special. Why don’t you take a look? Maybe you might know him," Luciana said, and even though Evelyn wanted to leave Luciana’s presence as soon as possible, she could only endure and follow after her.

Dominic’s back was facing them, so Evelyn didn’t see his face at first until he turned after hearing their footsteps.

"Lady Evelyn, meet my new guard, Dominic Baker. Or do you know him already?" Luciana asked, and Evelyn stared at her flusteredly.

’Could it be that the princess consort knew something? No... no way, that happened a long time before the princess consort arrived in Gloryland, and besides, if the princess consort knew about Dominic and her, she would have told the prince by now. Yes, she doesn’t know anything.’

"Why would I know him? He’s your guard, is he not?" She asked defensively and added when she saw Luciana’s probing look.

"And why would you want to introduce a mere guard to me?"

"No reason in particular; it’s just that I think Nick is too overprotective of me. He had just left the capital for a few days and had already placed a guard by my side. Tell me, someone might think I’m a precious treasure he’s protecting," Luciana said, with an exasperated look on her face.

’Precious, treasure my foot. Don’t you just want to show off in front of me? To think she even called him Nick so affectionately,’ Evelyn inwardly thought, fuming and wishing she could just kill Luciana once and for all.

"Yes, princess consort, the eldest prince surely dotes on you," Evelyn forced the words out through gritted teeth.

"You think so? I thought the prince wanted to monitor my every move because he didn’t trust me because of some people’s malicious intentions and rumors. But if you say so, I would believe you," Luciana said, and as if she had just realized something, she looked at Evelyn and exclaimed,

"Ha! I have forgotten you are tired and need to rest. You don’t need to see me off."

Evelyn nearly rolled her eyes. ’You don’t need to see me off your butt. She was already at the main entrance of her courtyard, and the princess consort was acting as if they were still in her drawing room.

"I thank the princess consort for gracing me with her presence," Evelyn said and bowed.

"Sure, sure, don’t forget about the morning walks. I’ll be expecting you tomorrow morning," Luciana said and left. She was in no mood to see the latest expression on Evelyn’s face.

After returning to her chambers, Luciana held her chin in deep thought and stared at her reflection in the mirror. She thought about everything that happened earlier at Evelyn’s place this morning and murmured to herself.

"I had thought that I would feel good after making Evelyn have a taste of her own medicine," she paused and stared at herself before adding, "But I feel even better; it’s like I’ve been dipped into honey!"

A wicked grin spread on her face when she heard a voice say,

"Well, at least you look happier than I expected."

Luciana turned to where the sound came from and saw that no one was there. Her heart skipped a beat, and she called out.

"Who is there?"

"I’m right here. Look down, lower, yes, here I am," the voice said, and Luciana, who had been following the instructions, saw a chubby white cat in the corner by the side of the bed. It looked unbelievably cute, but that wasn’t the most important thing; how was she able to talk to the cat? 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

"You? How can I hear you talking? I can understand you," Luciana said in shock.

"It’s not so surprising. Some people have the magic ability to talk to animals and understand them," the cat said and stretched lazily before adding.

"But your case is different; you were born with all the gifts, remember? This is just one of your many gifts."

"You, you know about my past?" Luciana asked the cat, and it yawned and replied lazily,

"Yes, I don’t only know about your past and your special ability. I have lived through it, and I have been waiting for two centuries to get to you, but every version of you never heard my voice; thankfully you can hear me now. I can fulfill my promise now. I’m here to help you break the curse."

"You know a way to break the curse?" Luciana asked in shock.
