Chapter 59: A look into the future

In the palace of Gloryland,

"Crash!"

The emperor angrily tossed the teacup in front of him onto the floor, thinking about Nicholas, who left his presence without being excused.

"Hmph! That wild seed is becoming more unruly by the day; he walked out just like that," he mumbled under his breath.

"Father Emperor, did you ask for me?" David, who had just arrived, slightly bowed and asked. The emperor saw his black eye and asked.

"What happened to your face?"

"Nothing important; I just ran into the door. Is something the matter? I just saw the eldest prince speeding away on a horse. Did something happen?" David asked even though he had an inkling of what was happening.

The emperor ignored his question about Nicholas and angrily pointed his finger at David’s face.

"You—what are you hiding in the Southern region? Tell me this instant!" he demanded.

David’s eyes flashed perceptibly, but he kept his composure.

"Nothing, Father; what could I possibly hide there?"

"Your brother brought some stack of documents about all the property and land you are acquiring in the Southern region," Emperor Ethan said and pushed the scrolls and parchment toward David. They came tumbling down the desk and fell on the stairs, with some rolling towards his feet. David picked one up, and his eyes widened at what he saw. He picked up another one, and it had more information than the previous one.

Emperor Ethan saw David’s expression, and his eyes darkened. Why was his son always so reckless? Even if he was doing something shady, didn’t he know how to cover his tracks?

"Now are you going to continue lying to me?" He asked.

"No, Father, I just discovered the Southern region is blessed with fertile land, and I want to do large-scale rice, mung bean, and millet farming there. If our production of these crops increases, we won’t be too dependent on the Tahlia country for it. We can even begin to export to other countries," David explained.

"Are you sure that is the actual reason for your unusual interest in the region? Your brother asked for permission to go there and inspect it personally. If I find out you are lying and he brings evidence against you, I will not spare you," he said. He had intentionally made his words sound as if he was angry so that David could cover up any shady business he had in the southern region. He was giving him a heads-up.

"Of course, Father, I’ll never lie to you," David assured.

"I know you have been associating with the ministers and dignitaries these days. You are still the second prince; how can you be so brazen?" Emperor Ethan chided, but one could hear a hint of indulgence and helplessness in his voice.

"Get ready; I want to lay down preparations for the marriage alliance between you and the Wazuzu princess. This concerns the future of the Gloryland empire; don’t ruin it again," he added.

"You already know my answer to that, Father Emperor, don’t you?"

"Are you talking back to me?" the emperor asked.

"I wouldn’t dare, but you promised you would let me choose my own bride and..."

"And how long has it been? You always reject the marriage alliances I propose to you, and I have to force them upon your brother. Do you think you can become the crown prince without any external support? I was saving the best for last; you must marry the Wazuzu princess," the king declared, interrupting David.

"I have found her, and you promised to bestow her to me and let me have her if I find her," David said.

"You’ve found her? Good, which family is she from? She can be your concubine, and the princess of Wazuzu would be your princess consort; I can only agree on that condition," he said.

David’s eyes flashed briefly. Would Luciana agree to be a concubine? He doubted it, but that wasn’t important now; it was best to get her first.

"It’s the princess consort, father. I want Princess Consort Luciana, and you must help me get her," David said. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

"The princess consort? The princess of Florendel? David, there’s a limit to everything under the sun; you can’t have everything just because I allow it. You can have any other woman but her," the emperor angrily spat.

"But I only want her. You always say I’m your beloved son, so prove it," David said, not backing down.

"You refused to marry the princess of Florendel when the alliance was made in your name. I had to threaten your eldest brother with the empress’ health before he agreed. You already knew how important it was for me to have an alliance between Florendel and Gloryland. Now why her?" Emperor Ethan felt as if he was about to have a heart attack; why did his son turn out this way? Did he spoil him too much?

"Maybe because I’m bored? You always treat me as second best; maybe I feel like throwing a tantrum," David said unreasonably and added,

"You can take your time and think about it; I will wait. You are the one who can’t wait any longer. It’s the empress dowager’s birthday in two weeks. What is going to happen if you can’t keep the fire burning for long enough? What do you think the dignitaries and ministers present would think if they found out your magic is becoming weak? I’m the only one who can help you."

"Are you threatening me?" The emperor asked.

"I wouldn’t dare, Your Majesty," David said emotionlessly.

"Why must it be her?" The emperor asked with heartache.

"You don’t need to know; I know what I’ll do with her myself if I finally have her," David said.

"Fine," Emperor Ethan reluctantly agreed.

"If I help you get her, are you willing to let go of your chances of becoming the next crown prince? If I allow something as abominable as this, you can no longer be the son of the Hunt family," Emperor Ethan said. He knew that to make David give up, he must make drastic decisions; he couldn’t have the crown and the woman at the same time. You can only look into a bottle with one eye.

"Sure, I would rather have her," David said, catching the emperor off guard. The gold mine he found in the Southern region was already operating. He just needed enough gold to hush up those dignitaries and ministers. He would become the next emperor himself without the help of his father. He already knew his father wanted Nicholas to be the next king.

"Good, very good. Don’t you dare regret your choice today," the emperor said.

"I won’t regret it," David said, remembering what the strange woman who had bumped into him in the streets of the capital had shown him earlier today. It was a vision of the future; he and Luciana were getting married. The woman said he and Luciana were fated lovers. They were meant to be. Even the deities were on his side. What more could he ask for?
