Rebirth-Transcending All Beings-Chapter 70: The Cycle of Pain
Her story finally came to an end. And what awaited after was something Vergil could neither fathom.
Luminare stepped into the centre of the array. Its light began to rise around her like a torrential wave of wind, brushing against her body.
"The Heaven Refining Array," she muttered, lowering herself into a sitting position, folding her legs beneath her. The array responded to her presence, glowing even brighter.
Vergil watched, frozen in place.
"Vergil, my lovely son," her voice was much softer. "I don’t want you to be alone. So I’ll always be with you."
"As your new arm."
Her hands gripped the tattered fabric of her gown, slowly lifting what was beneath, and the truth was revealed.
A massive hole in her chest, her flesh decayed, and her ribs were exposed. And in the center of it all, rested a fragile blue-white core that pulsed faintly — with spiderwebbed cracks across it.
’No, no, no. Stop, stop stop it!’ He wanted her to stop but his mouth remained paralysed.
"My lifespan has nearly ended," she spoke unwavering. "This is my soul in physical form. Just like you my lovely child, we both had holes."
"Just that... mine can’t be closed."
Vergil’s eyes trembled, tears begging to form in his eyes. He didn’t want her to die. He wanted her to live.
Luminare looked down at her soul, then at him with a smile both radiant and broken.
Suddenly her face changed. A dark shadow passing over it, her lips pressed together and her eyes narrowed.
Her facial expression turned to something which couldn’t be read. An expression of nothingness.
"I want to ask you a favour," she spoke coldly. "Not as your mother, but as the title given to me by Aurelia."
"The Angel of Death, Luminare."
"If you by any chance meet my sister."
Her voice dropped lower. "Brutalise her in the worst way imaginable, and don’t let her rest in peace."
Vergil’s eyes widened, his left eye observed if she truly meant it. There was no ripple.
She wasn’t lying.
And Vergil understood.
She crawled forward, embracing him one last time. Her arms wrapped around his neck trembling. She pulled her forehead to his.
"So go," she whispered. "Climb higher as you said you would. Make new friends. Laugh and smile like I taught you and don’t look back."
Tears poured down his eyes. And from his left eye, a thick red liquid poured down his cheek.
It was neither blood nor tears but something in-between.
He was filled with a sorrow that couldn’t be described, as he felt his mother’s emotions. Regret, happiness, longing, vengeance, sorrow and love.
Her soul screamed those feelings into his, the pain reduced his mind a chaotic mess.
"With my abilities, you can escape this place."
Then, after a moment of silence. "But when I become your arm, my divine energy will reject your demonic one. You will die."
"But my divine energy will hold you together. It will keep you alive."
"So find your balance. If it’s anyone who can do it, it will be you."
She smiled again, a smile full of pain and love. "So struggle and move forward. So don’t cry. I will always be there. To comfort you."
She turned away from him slowly. Her steps no longer carrying the hesitation that lingered. She resumed her position.
And without shame, she removed her clothes — each piece falling to the glowing floor, revealing only the decay beneath.
She did not cower nor was she embraced. All that remained was her dignity, not letting it falter.
Then her final words came. "Heaven and Earth, refine this vessel of mine into an arm — capable of shaking the world and piercing the heavens above.
The array surged upward, glyphs igniting in a blinding sequence.
"Fuse everything. Both body... and soul."
The tunes shook. The spike resonated with a celestial energy that erupted into a blinding white light thag tried to pierced the abyss above.
But was blocked. Contained. Sealed beneath the Space-Time Array that protected this place from the prying eyes of the world.
And Vergil, still unmoving had borne witness to the beginning of his mother’s end.
And her eternal gift.
The blinding light consumed all his senses as if time itself had lost its meaning in this ocean of radiance. His fingers trembled. He could move slightly among the warm radiance that permeated his body.
Then it ended.
The light from the array flickered once more and finally dimmed, withdrawing like a retreating tide. His vision returned in a kaleidoscope of colours, slowly stitching the world back together.
Where the spike had once stood tall — where it had pierced his body like an instrument of execution — it had shattered.
Broken into a scattering of glowing shards that surrounded the array, hovering briefly before fading like dying embers.
Yet floating where Luminare was positioned was the shape of an arm that took form. Mechanical — not with gears and wires. But in a divine, celestial way. Elegantly smooth and coldly beautiful.
The white plating shimmered with faint pulses of blue and on the outer shell bloomed a tattoo. A flower, but one he could recognise from Earth.
A blue spider lily. Its petals curved like the hands of fate. Delicate and ominous. A symbol of death and rebirth. Of endings that lead to a new beginning.
’Why that, out of everything?’ He could only think, not knowing of an answer.
The rest of the arm was silver-white, as if forged not of metal, but from frozen starlight.
It hovered there silently, watching him, sensing him, as if waiting for his recognition.
Vergil was finally able to move, rising up with a grunt before staggering forward. His fingers trembled as he reached out with his non-existent right hand.
The arm reacted.
It surged forward in a streak of silver lightning, the socket at the base of the mechanical limb connected to Vergil’s torso with a mechanical snap.
He screamed. It wasn’t just pain — it was transformation. Something was being rewritten in the deepest layers of his existence.
His arm began to reshape itself, fusing into him and altering into living tissue.
Then his head exploded.
There was no time to process it. One moment he was screaming, and what came next was darkness and a whirring noise that followed, stirring something within.
