Chapter 27: The archive is confirmed to be within this facility

The meal was satisfying, but Qingran didn’t let herself fully relax. She ate quickly, her mind already running through the plan for the night.

The facility was their main objective. Whatever was inside, whatever experiments had led to that man-made zombie, she needed to know. Her system had led her here for a reason.

Across from her, Feng Yizhou finished his steak and leaned back against the chair, watching her with a knowing look.

"You’re thinking too much."

"I don’t have the luxury of shutting my brain off," she muttered, sipping the hot tea that had come with their meal. "I need to be prepared." freewebnσvel.cѳm

"You won’t be prepared if you exhaust yourself before we even get there," he countered. "Rest. Take a nap if you have to. We have time before nightfall."

She hated that he had a point. Again.

The food had settled in her stomach, and the exhaustion from the long drive was catching up. If she went into this mission running on fumes, she’d make mistakes.

Qingran sighed and stood. "Fine. Wake me up an hour before we leave."

Feng Yizhou gave a lazy salute. "Got it."

She ignored him and headed toward the bedroom, shutting the door behind her.

The room was dark, the heavy curtains blocking out the afternoon sun. She kicked off her shoes, slid under the covers, and let her body sink into the absurdly soft mattress.

As she closed her eyes, Qingran felt her tense muscles begin to unwind, the softness of the bed enveloping her like a warm hug. She took a deep breath, letting the exhaustion wash over her, and allowed herself to drift off into a light sleep.

Feng Yizhou’s voice was low and gentle when he woke her, the sound piercing through the haze of her sleep. "Time to get up, Qingran. We leave in an hour."

She sat up with a start, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. The room was still dim, the only light coming from the faint glow of the bedside clock. Qingran swung her legs over the side of the bed, planting her feet firmly on the ground. She took a moment to collect herself, shaking off the lingering fogginess.

"Thanks," she said, her voice rough from sleep, as she stood up and began to make her way to the bathroom.

Feng Yizhou was already up and about, his eyes fixed on his phone as he scrolled through what looked like a map of the facility. "I’ve been going over the layout," he said, not looking up. "There are several entry points, but I think our best bet is the east wing. Less security, and it looks like it’s been abandoned for a while."

Qingran nodded, even though he wasn’t looking at her. She knew he’d been studying the facility’s layout, trying to find the best way in. She trusted his judgment, and she knew he’d have a solid plan in place.

As she splashed water on her face, Qingran felt a surge of adrenaline begin to course through her veins. It was almost time. They were going in.

By the time Qingran stepped out of the bathroom, the last remnants of sleep had faded. Her mind was sharp, her body alert. She changed into darker clothes, ones that would blend into the night, and secured her weapons—knives hidden under her jacket, a small firearm strapped to her thigh.

Feng Yizhou had already packed their gear. He tossed her a small earpiece. "We’ll keep communication open the whole time. No unnecessary risks. If something feels off, we pull out."

She slipped the earpiece in and met his gaze. "We won’t need to pull out."

He smirked. "Let’s hope you’re right."

They left the hotel without drawing attention, moving through the bustling streets of Xi’an with ease. The city was alive with neon lights and the steady hum of traffic. It was strange, almost surreal, to think that beneath all this normalcy, something dangerous lurked.

They took a taxi most of the way, stopping a few blocks from their destination. From there, they moved on foot, cutting through quiet alleys and keeping out of sight.

The facility loomed in the distance. A cold, lifeless structure on the outskirts of the city.

Qingran crouched behind a low wall, scanning the perimeter. From this distance, the building looked abandoned, but she knew better.

Feng Yizhou was already assessing their next move. "Security is light, but there are still cameras at the main entrances. If we go in through the east wing, we’ll avoid most of them."

Qingran nodded. "Let’s move."

They kept low, slipping through the shadows until they reached the fence surrounding the facility. Feng Yizhou took out a small tool and began cutting through the wire. It took less than a minute before they slipped inside.

The air was thick with the scent of metal and chemicals. The facility was quiet—too quiet.

Qingran’s system beeped softly in her ear.

[Caution: High-level bio-signatures detected within the building. Unknown variables present. Proceed with caution.]

Feng Yizhou caught the subtle shift in her expression. "What is it?"

"Something’s inside," she murmured.

His grip tightened around his weapon. "Then let’s be quick."

They pressed forward, keeping to the shadows as they moved deeper into the facility. Qingran’s pulse was steady, her senses on high alert.

Qingran’s eyes scanned the empty hallway as she pressed herself against the cold wall. The facility was massive, a maze of corridors and locked doors, and she knew finding the archive wouldn’t be as simple as walking in.

She touched the earpiece. "Lingquan, give me the directions to the archive."

There was a brief silence before the system responded.

[Unknown. Insufficient data on facility layout.]

Qingran frowned. "You don’t know?"

[Correct. No detailed blueprints of this structure exist within my database. However—]

She narrowed her eyes. "However?"

[The archive is confirmed to be within this facility. Its exact location is undetermined.]

That was enough for her. It existed. That meant she would find it.
