Chapter 49: Luckily they have 9 lives

Qingran didn’t react immediately, but she didn’t need to. She felt Feng Yizhou shift slightly beside her, his fingers tapping once against his knee, a silent acknowledgment that he’d noticed them too.

The approaching pair weren’t making a show of their arrival, but their presence alone was enough to draw subtle attention. Other guests instinctively stepped aside, giving them space without needing to be asked.

Qingran took in the silver-haired man first. Up close, his features were striking, sharp yet composed, his expression impossible to read. He carried himself with a quiet confidence, his gaze sweeping over them like a man accustomed to knowing everything in a room without needing to ask.

The girl beside him was younger, likely no older than seventeen. Despite her age, she moved with an easy grace, her crimson eyes lingering on Qingran a bit longer than necessary.

When they finally stopped in front of them, it was the girl who spoke first.

"You bid quite aggressively Auntie." Her voice was light, almost playful, but there was an edge to it, as if she were testing the waters.

"...."

Did she just call her auntie?!!

[Ah! Never in my days..haha]

Qingran swallowed it down as best as she could and met her gaze evenly. "That’s how an auction works Kid."

"...."

The girl’s lips quirked slightly. "True, but you don’t look like someone who throws around that kind of money lightly."

Feng Yizhou chuckled beside her. "And you don’t look like someone who’s old enough to attend such auctions."

The silver-haired man finally spoke, his voice calm but carrying a quiet authority. "The Evol weapon isn’t something that just anyone can hold. Why are you interested in it?."

It wasn’t a threat, but it wasn’t far from one either.

Qingran knew what they wanted. They weren’t here for small talk. They wanted to know who she and Feng Yizhou were, why they had bid so high, and whether they had the power to back up their claim.

She glanced at Yizhou. He was already looking at her, smirk barely visible.

Qingran turned back to them and smiled faintly. "Why does anyone want anything? We’re just merely curious"

The silver-haired man studied her for a long moment, then gave a slight nod. "Curious kills the cat they say."

"Luckily they have 9 lives.." Qingran lips raised, laughing silently at her own joke.

With that, he turned, walking away without another word. The girl lingered for a second longer, her gaze sweeping over Qingran once more before following.

As soon as they were gone, Feng Yizhou exhaled a soft laugh. "That was fun."

Qingran shot him a dry look. "We need to leave. Now."

He grinned. "You’re worried?"

"I don’t like people paying too much attention to me."

His smile didn’t fade, but his eyes sharpened slightly. "Then you shouldn’t have bought the most dangerous thing in the room."

Qingran exhaled, pushing down her irritation. He wasn’t wrong. If it wasn’t for the mission she wouldn’t have done so.

They needed to get out of here before more people started asking questions.

Feng Yizhou didn’t make a move immediately. He stretched out the moment a staff member approached, looking entirely too relaxed for someone about to drop four hundred and twenty million yuan.

"Mr Yan," the staff member greeted respectfully. "Your transaction has been prepared. If you’ll follow me, we can finalize the payment and arrange for your item’s retrieval."

Yizhou stood, brushing off his sleeves with an easy smirk. "Lead the way then."

Qingran followed, keeping her steps measured. She could still feel lingering stares on them, their curiosity running high. No one had dared to approach them again, but she knew it was only a matter of time before interest turned into something more troublesome.

They were led to a more private transaction room, where security measures were in place. A posh terminal awaited them, the number flashing on the screen confirming the absurd amount they owed.

Feng Yizhou didn’t even blink. He pulled out his device, tapped a few times, and with a smooth beep, the transaction was complete.

"Pleasure doing business," he said lazily.

The staff member remained unfazed, giving a professional nod. "Thank you for your purchase. Your item is being prepared for release. Please wait a moment."

Qingran crossed her arms. "You really don’t hesitate when spending money huh."

Yizhou grinned. "Well I earned it, fair and square. Besides it’s too much anyways, why not burn off some." He leaned in slightly, his voice dropping. "You agreed to the deal, remember?"

Qingran exhaled through her nose, unwilling to entertain him.

A moment later, another staff member entered, pushing a secure case on a reinforced cart. It was the same one from the stage, every lock intact.

"Your item Sir," the staff announced. "Shall we arrange for a secure transport, or will you be handling it personally?"

"Personally," Qingran answered before Yizhou could open his mouth.

The staff nodded, stepping aside as they disengaged the final lock and handed over the case. It was heavier than it looked, but nothing she couldn’t handle.

With that, there was nothing left to do.

"Shall we?" Yizhou gestured toward the exit.

Qingran didn’t respond, already turning on her heel.

They had the weapon. Now they just needed to leave before trouble found them.

"Don’t you want to me to help you? It’s look kinda heavy..."

Qingran nodded and handed the case to Yizhou, she could use the opportunity to discuss with Lingquan.

As they moved through the corridors, Qingran kept her expression neutral, but her thoughts had already shifted elsewhere.

"Lingquan," she called inwardly.

[Yes, Host?]

"The token I received—what can it be used for?"

A brief pause. Then, Lingquan’s voice carried a hint of intrigue. [The system upgrade token is a flexible system reward. You can use it to either unlock a new system feature or upgrade an existing one. The options available to you will depend on your system’s current level and functions.]

Qingran’s eyes flickered. "Show me my options."

A translucent screen appeared before her, listing several choices for her to choose from;

1. Upgrade Spatial Storage – Increases storage capacity and allows for better organization.

2. Upgrade Combat Analysis – Enhances the system’s ability to analyze enemies, including predicting movement patterns.

3. Unlock Auto-Extraction – Allows automatic resource extraction from defeated enemies, including system cores, if they are system users.

4. Unlock System Exchange – Grants access to a hidden market where rare items can be traded.

5. Upgrade Omni-Detection – Expands the range and accuracy of detecting threats and resources.
