Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1571 - 800: Joy Upon Raising One’s Head
In these times, marriage was meant to unite two families, and besides that, its primary purpose was to continue the family lineage. As soon as Lian Zhizhi married into the Wu Family, Lian Manman and Xiao Qi were already speculating about little nephews. Now, seeing Lady Zhang and Lian Zhizhi being all mysterious, Lian Manman immediately guessed the reason.
Lian Zhizhi seems to be pregnant.
This is indeed great news.
"Manman, keep your voice down," Lian Zhizhi said hurriedly, blushing. She wasn’t certain whether she was pregnant yet, and being naturally bashful, even more so than other newlyweds, she didn’t want too many people to know about it before being sure.
"You little girl, you know about everything," Lady Zhang joked while teasing Lian Manman. Despite her young age, Lian Manman was sharp, and nothing could be hidden from her.
Lian Manman laughed and edged closer, listening to Lady Zhang and Lian Zhizhi whisper.
Lian Zhizhi married Wu Jiaxing on the twenty-eighth of winter month, right after her period. The choice of that date was determined by Lady Zhang and Lady Wu Wang, considering Lian Zhizhi’s cycle. Now that it’s just into the new year, Lian Zhizhi hasn’t had her period since arriving at the Wu Family.
Lady Zhang counted on her fingers, helping Lian Zhizhi calculate the days.
"...Right after marriage, periods can be irregular. Today is the second, so it’s about seven or eight days late. It’s hard to say for sure. Zhizhi, are you feeling nauseous? Any discomfort?... But your cycle has always been regular, and it’s been seven or eight days..."
The two talked for a while but were still uncertain.
"Mother, why not invite Doctor Li to check my sister’s pulse, then we’d know everything," Lian Manman suggested. Matters like these were best confirmed by a doctor for certainty.
Lian Zhizhi, however, shook her head repeatedly.
"...If it’s not the case, people will laugh at me, saying I’m delicate and whatnot..."
For tenant farmer wives, matters like pregnancy and childbirth were mostly based on experience; lacking it meant leaving things to nature. It was generally more rough-and-ready living, seldom inviting a doctor. Lian Zhizhi still considered herself a tenant farmer’s wife.
"Sis, why would you say that? Who would laugh at you, there’s nobody who’d call you delicate. We surely won’t, neither would Brother Jiaxing, or Aunt and the others," Lian Manman laughed.
Sometimes, Lian Zhizhi was overly cautious.
"This matter isn’t urgent within a day or two," Lady Zhang thought for a bit and said, "But it can’t be delayed either. For the first child, everything should be careful not to harm the body... I’ll mention it to Jiaxing, and when you return, discuss it with your mother-in-law. I’m sure she already suspects it. By then, inviting the doctor over to your place, Jiaxing and your mother-in-law will surely be pleased."
Although Lady Zhang wished to immediately invite the doctor to check Lian Zhizhi’s pulse, upon reconsideration, she thought it best for this to be done by the Wu Family. Lady Zhang’s view was quite traditional; the Wu Family should be the first to know the joyful news of having a grandson.
Lian Manman chuckled secretly; it seems Lian Zhizhi’s caution in being a wife and handling in-law relations was entirely inherited from Lady Zhang.
Lady Zhang and Lian Zhizhi finished discussing and indeed sent someone to call Wu Jiaxing.
While Lady Zhang and Lian Zhizhi discussed these private matters, Lian Manman could listen in, but when speaking to Wu Jiaxing about related matters, it wasn’t suitable for Lian Manman to be present. So, she cheerfully left the room with Xiao Xi, heading to the front courtyard intending to personally check on the kitchen preparations for the meal for Lian Zhizhi and Wu Jiaxing.
After making a round in the kitchen, she saw Xiao Qi leading the servant Xiao Hetao and the Little Monk Xiao Tanzhi, all happily strolling into the courtyard from outside.
"Out playing again?" Lian Manman waved to Xiao Qi. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
"Sis, why have you come to the back courtyard?" Xiao Qi ran over joyfully.
Xiao Hetao and Xiao Tanzhi followed suit, hurriedly greeting Lian Manman.
"I came to the kitchen to check on how the dishes are coming along," Lian Manman told Xiao Qi, then smiled at Xiao Tanzhi, "... Is the Abbot Master well? Have you eaten yet? There are freshly steamed bean buns and vegetarian dishes in the kitchen, let Xiao Qi accompany you to eat... Someone just sent a jar of vegetarian wine which I was planning to send to the temple. Perfect timing, take it back to the Abbot Master."
"I’ve already eaten; had pastries at the Yeye Household... My master loves vegetarian wine, but it’s always so bothersome..." Xiao Tanzhi said with a shy smile. Xiao Tanzhi had grown a bit taller, not very tall, but particularly sturdy. He frequently visited the Yeye Household now, helping fetch water, chop wood, or do other chores, and Lady Zhao liked him, often inviting him for meals.
