Chapter 1649: Chapter 841: Filing a Complaint (Part 2)

Lian Manman also nodded. Although poor, she wanted to marry into a relatively affluent family, but she was not blinded by wealth and did not jump at every opportunity. Such a person is much more likable than Si Lang.

"No matter what others say, she won’t take a big carriage, just her own donkey cart. Si Lang even said he wanted to escort them and wanted my dad to lead the mule for him." Lian Yeye told Lian Manman, "It’s a good thing I was there, I stopped my dad from going."

Lian Manman knew that Lian Yeye ran to the old house after dinner. Although partly to gather information, more importantly, she was concerned that Lian Shouli might be ordered around by Si Lang again.

"What did you say?" Lian Manman asked with a smile. Judging by Lian Yeye’s expression when she entered the room, Lian Manman guessed that Yeye must have vented her anger.

"I simply told Si Lang, if he wants to ride a mule, he should do it himself. My dad is his third uncle, his elder, not his servant or hired hand. Why should my dad have to lead the mule on foot in this freezing weather while they ride in carriages or mules? It’s dehumanizing." Lian Yeye recounted what she said at the time to Lian Manman.

Lian Manman couldn’t help but laugh; she thought Lian Yeye’s words were spot on.

Although everyone said to endure, endure, Lian Yeye still disgraced Si Lang in front of others.

"Can’t blame Yeye for this," said Lady Wu Wang. "Si Lang is really oblivious, can’t keep repeating this behavior."

Even if Si Lang’s actions were already inappropriate, trying to bully Lian Shouli with Lian Yeye present was simply inciting trouble for himself.

"He’s unbelievably arrogant," Lian Manman said, adding that he underestimated Lian Yeye too much.

"When I told him so, he wasn’t happy and said something about being my brother, that I was disrespectful for speaking to him like that, and said he would teach me a lesson. My dad was trying to mediate," Lian Yeye continued, "If my dad hadn’t held me back, I would have had much more to say. In the end, I didn’t let my dad lead the mule for him."

"Did he end up escorting the Wang Family? Did he walk there or ride the mule?" Lian Manman asked with a smile.

"He went. He didn’t dare ride the mule alone, insisted someone lead it. Since I wouldn’t let my dad do it, he found your family’s carriage driver to lead it for him." Lian Yeye answered.

"Oh?" Lian Manman raised an eyebrow slightly.

"The driver refused, saying he was only there to drive the carriage. Si Lang berated him, acting like he was some big shot. He claimed that the driver was sent by my fourth uncle to be ordered around by him, and said if the driver didn’t obey, he’d report to my fourth uncle, making him suffer the consequences."

"It was freezing cold, and early in the morning, the driver went to pick people up and stayed outside tending to the animals, drinking only one cup of hot water. It was our eldest sister-in-law who thought of him and had Brother Jizu deliver it. Then he was asked to lead the mule, without even getting a meal."

"What happened afterward?" Lian Manman asked.

"He had the driver drive the carriage, and he rode in it to send off the Wang Family," Lian Yeye said, "and also supposedly to send the matchmaker back to town."

The driver, after all, was eating food given by the Lian Family, no matter how poorly treated at the old house or dissatisfied with Si Lang, he ultimately had to adhere to the family’s instructions.

"Was the marriage agreed upon?" Lady Zhang asked.

Lian Yeye shook her head.

"What, they didn’t find Si Lang suitable?" Lady Zhang asked quickly. Refusing to ride the Lian Family’s large carriage on the way back might indicate the Wang Family wasn’t intending to ally with the Lian Family through marriage.

"Not exactly, it seems the Wang Family said through the matchmaker that they need time to think and will give a definite answer in a couple of days," Lian Yeye explained.

"Oh." Lady Zhang nodded, noting that this situation wasn’t uncommon. After meeting, one doesn’t make an immediate decision but takes a couple of days to discuss or inquire further. "I think the Second Master seems pretty keen on this marriage; what about the Old Master and the Old Madam, did they like them?"

"My grandma said Miss Wang doesn’t talk much, and my grandpa seemed pleased," Lian Yeye replied. "He mentioned that mountain girls are honest and hardworking, and said that Old Master Wang appears to be a sincere man."

"My grandpa packed ten pounds of peanuts for the Old Wang Family, but they didn’t take it," Lian Yeye added. "The matchmaker took five pounds of peanuts and seemed to also request a reward."

This case was clear; the people at the old house had taken a liking to the Wang family’s daughter and wanted the marriage. Now it was just up to the Wang Family to agree.

"Do you think it’s just Si Lang one-sidedly eager, or is the Wang Family being coy?" Lady Wu Wang discussed in a low voice with Lady Zhang. Although Lian Yeye could clearly recount what she saw and heard at the old house, some things weren’t so straightforward.

"We weren’t there, so we don’t really know what kind of people the Old Wang Family is. It’s hard to say," Lady Zhang said. "We’ll have to wait a couple of days and see their response."

In the afternoon, Lian Shouxin returned from outside, and Lian Manman signaled to Lian Yeye, who ran up to Lian Shouxin and recounted how Si Lang ordered Lian Shouli around.

"Did that really happen?!" Lian Shouxin’s expression changed.

"Would Yeye lie about this?" Lady Zhang said. "There were plenty of people on the road; you can go ask around and find out for yourself."

Lian Shouxin didn’t think Lian Yeye was lying, but he found it hard to believe that Si Lang would act in such a way.

Lian Yeye then told Lian Shouxin about how Si Lang boasted in front of the Wang Family.

"All the words I said to him that day were for nothing, ah!" Lian Shouxin struck his thigh in frustration, looking quite pained. Just as he had begun to have a little hope for Si Lang, Si Lang let him down again. Full of lies, boasting arrogantly, and ordering his elders around—these things were enough to disgust Lian Shouxin, no matter how biased he was towards Si Lang.

While they were speaking, someone came in from outside to announce that Si Lang had arrived and wanted to see Lian Shouxin.
