Chapter 639: Chapter 329: The Mountain Rain Is Coming_1

It was the second watch of the night, "seeking the rosy hues".

****......***

Old Master Lian demanded that the family be divided.

Lady Zhou was the first to change her expression.

"Old man, have you lost your senses? Divide the family? Everything we have is solid, and Xiuxiu’s marriage hasn’t been settled yet." Lady Zhou said anxiously, then turned her head and glared at Lian Shouxin, "What are you blabbering to your father for? Look at what you’ve done now. Just for ’One String of Coins’, my old face isn’t worth that much. Are you so blinded by money?"

Lian Shouxin felt helpless.

Lian Manman held her forehead. Faced with someone who was unreasonable and presented falsehoods as truth, and who moreover was an elder of the family—someone you couldn’t hit or scold—what could you do besides suppress your grievances until they turned into internal injuries?

Being entangled with Lady Zhou meant there would never be an end to it. Lian Manman thought it best to take the thirty-sixth stratagem—retreat was the best option. However, before leaving, she still wanted to make things clear.

"Grandfather, my father has laid everything out clearly with you. You are the head of this family, and it’s still your decision to make." Lian Manman ignored Lady Zhou and spoke only to Old Master Lian, "Grandfather, my father and I will go back first. Take your time and think it over. If you still wish for my father to pay ’One String of Coins’, then have our aunt send us a message."

After finishing her speech, Lian Manman got down from the kang and gave Lian Shouxin a meaningful look.

Lian Shouxin also stood up.

"Father, Mother, I will go back first."

Lian Shouxin and Lian Manman left the Upper Room and returned to the West Wing Room.

Lady Zhang was scooping rice from a pot into a basin. It was a pot of sorghum rice steamed to perfection that evening, with just a thin layer of crispy rice crust left at the bottom after serving.

"Mother, save the crust for me." Lian Manman said.

"Alright, I’ll keep it for you. Don’t eat it now, wait until it’s served at the table." Lady Zhang carefully scraped off the rice crust, shaped it into a ball on top of the steamed rice, and then covered the basin with a lid to keep it warm.

"What did they say?" Lady Zhang asked, "Just now at the door, I heard Old Master making a fuss about dividing the family. Is it really happening?"

"Let’s go inside and talk." Lian Shouxin said, taking the basin of rice from Lady Zhang and walking into the inner room.

Sitting down in the inner room, Lian Shouxin and Lian Manman recounted the events that had taken place in the Upper Room to Lady Zhang.

"Manman, when you told your grandfather, if he still insisted on us paying, are we actually going to do it?" Lady Zhang asked after hearing the story.

"I’ve made it very clear, Old Master can’t do that." Lian Shouxin said. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

Indeed, his words were correct, and Lian Manman’s previous statements were also just for the sake of appearances.

"Could his grandfather really make up his mind to divide the family? If we do divide, how would it be done?" Lady Zhang murmured to herself.

While they were talking, Lian Shouli, Lady Zhao, and Lian Yeye walked in from outside. Lian Shouli had just returned from finishing work on the mountain and, hearing rumors, came to inquire with Lian Shouxin.

"Did Father truly say he wants to divide the family?" asked Lian Shouli.

"There was such a talk. Let’s wait and see; if Father sorts things out, he’ll call us over." replied Lian Shouxin.

"Feels like I’m dreaming." whispered Lian Yeye, her little cheeks flushed with excitement, her eyes sparkling with hope.

...

In the West Room of the Upper Room, the door was tightly closed. Aside from Niuniu, who was lying on the kang sleeping, Lian Shouren, Lian Jizu, Lady Gu, Lian Duoduo, and Lady Chiang were all sitting on the kang, discussing softly.

"Has Old Master really decided to divide the family this time?" wondered Lian Shouren thoughtfully.

"I heard it clearly. Grandfather’s voice sounded quite angry." Lian Duoduo whispered, then turned to Lady Gu with a smile, "Mother, if we divide the family, can we move to the city?"

"Don’t just dream about going back to the city; nothing’s certain yet." Lady Gu reproached Lian Duoduo with a glance, while inwardly letting out a sigh. Lian Duoduo and Lian Manman were the same age, but the way they spoke and acted could not even begin to compare. For instance, at that moment, Lian Duoduo only thought about enjoying the comforts of the city, utterly unaware that dividing a family was not a simple matter.

If it were that simple, they would already be living in the county town by now—who would willingly suffer in the countryside? Sometimes fate is unfair; Lady Zhang was able to bear such a clever daughter, while she was stuck with a foolish one.

But fortunately, there was Lian Huahua. Perhaps it was Huahua who inherited all the cleverness, leaving Duoduo shortchanged.

"Husband, if we truly do divide, what should we say?" Lady Gu asked Lian Shouren.

"If I still wish to pursue an official career in the future, we can’t agree to this division." Lian Shouren considered, then slowly said.

"We didn’t propose to divide the family; it was Grandfather who brought it up, wasn’t it?" Lian Jizu interjected.
