Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 711 - 364 Threat_2
Old Master Lian was a man concerned with appearances; when attending banquets, he didn’t like to bring children with him. Xiao Qi went with him only because he was the youngest grandson, and it was a joyful celebration of the Wu Family, to which the Lian Family was related, that Old Master Lian finally took him along.
As for little girls like Lian Manman and Lian Yeye, they generally had no opportunity to go to such events when they were young.
The idea of sitting at a banquet with a group of children of a similar age, as they were doing now, had never even crossed their minds.
Lian Manman peeled a fruit for Xiao Qi and casually surveyed the room.
All the children seated at the tables were dressed very properly, many with little gold locks hanging on their chests. The little girl sitting next to Xiao Qi looked to be about seven or eight years old, with big eyes and a small mouth, very cute. Yet, her mannerisms and the way she talked were like those of a little adult, and she took the initiative to speak to Xiao Qi.
"What’s your name?" the little girl asked Xiao Qi.
"I, my name is Xiao Qi." Xiao Qi was being approached by such a well-dressed and pretty little girl for the first time; the little guy was obviously nervous, even blurting out his nickname.
"I heard you just called Seventh Young Master of the Wang Family ’Brother Youheng.’" the little girl stated.
"That’s my Brother Youheng," Xiao Qi said, regaining some composure.
"Oh, so you’re from the Wang Family side," the little girl acted as if she had just realized, sighing like an adult, "This seating is all mixed up."
Lian Manman stifled a laugh.
"My name is Xiao Qi; what’s your name?" Xiao Qi, now completely calm, asked the little girl for her name.
The little girl didn’t speak at first, so Xiao Qi just kept looking at her.
"My name is Zhou Qinghe." Pressured by Xiao Qi’s gaze, the little girl said softly with a blush on her cheeks.
Lian Manman couldn’t help but smile; no matter how mature she tried to seem, she was still just a little girl of a few years old. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
Soon, someone came to clear away the fruit plates as the banquet began, the dishes arriving in quick succession. Lian Manman sat up straight, holding her chopsticks, and began to eat as she saw others do the same.
Thanks to Wang Youheng, today she would enjoy a good meal.
As the banquet commenced, there was also activity on the stage, a simple play arranged especially for the children, mostly acrobatics and flag-waving to the rhythm of gongs and drums, performed by children around eight or nine years old.
Such plays didn’t have lines, but they were lively. The children at the table enjoyed them very much, some even mimicking adults and exclaiming their approval.
After eating for a while at the banquet, Lian Yeye complained of a stomach ache. Lian Manman asked Xiao Qi to stay at the table, inquired a nearby old woman about the location of the latrines, and accompanied Lian Yeye to a nearby courtyard through the garden.
While Lian Yeye used the latrine, Lian Manman sat on the balustrade of a veranda in the courtyard.
"Hey, Lian Manman, what are you doing here?" Suddenly, a person darted through a nearby side door, spotted Lian Manman, and exclaimed in surprise.
Lian Manman looked up and recognized the girl in the grand red dress as Yingzi.
"Yingzi, what are you doing here?" Lian Manman asked.
Yingzi looked Lian Manman up and down a few times and waved her hand at her.
"Slacking off, huh? Get back to work quickly, we’re short-handed there."
The Wang Family needed to accommodate a large number of guests for the wedding, and their family had sent a steward to the village to hire young girls around ten years old to help with chores for good pay. Several girls around Lian Manman’s age, including Yingzi, came. Evidently, Yingzi was there to help with the chores, and she mistook Lian Manman for one of her companions.
"I’m waiting for someone, I’ll be right back," Lian Manman didn’t bother to explain and simply said.
"I don’t have time for you. Go back or they’ll dock your pay, then you’ll cry," Yingzi said, flipping her handkerchief as she sashayed back towards the garden where Lian Manman had been sitting.
Watching Yingzi’s retreating figure, Lian Manman wondered when Yingzi’s family had become wealthy. The fabric of the clothes Yingzi wore was beyond what her family’s financial situation could afford.
Lian Manman sat on the balustrade a while longer but still didn’t see Lian Yeye come out. Bored, she walked around the deserted courtyard. Behind a clump of canna flowers, she found a side door, which opened easily with a gentle push. Peering in and seeing no one, she walked in.
The courtyard seemed to be used for storage and was empty, when suddenly she heard a faint talking from a nearby room.
Lian Manman thought to withdraw, but then she stopped.
"...You promised me so earnestly back then, and it’s been so long now, I’ve only asked you for this one thing. Don’t tell me you’re afraid of Lian Laosi’s family and don’t dare to speak up?"
It was Yingzi’s voice, and since her family was mentioned, Lian Manman naturally listened attentively.
"Nonsense, he’s just a farmer. Am I afraid of him? Don’t worry about it, wait..."
"Wait, you want me to wait again. Wait until you get married? You swore on your life, sweet-talked me, took advantage of me, and afterwards, you’re a changed person. Today, you have to give me an answer. Either send a sedan to take me in, I’ll be your concubine, a servant, I’ll serve you and your new wife, I’m willing. Or you transfer that shop to my family."
