Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 741 - 379 Thinking of Turning the Tables_2
"Old Madam is a sensible person, listening to her eldest son," Old Jin laughed heartily, delivering such a remark.
The comment was just too interesting, and most of the people in the room couldn’t help but chuckle softly.
"Dad, what are you freezing up for? We have to write one of these documents too," Lian Yeye, who had been lurking at the doorway, was afraid that Lian Shouyi would be overlooked again. She hurried in, pulling on Lian Shouyi’s sleeve anxiously.
Lian Shouyi and Lian Shouxin were different. Lian Shouxin had moved out nearly a year ago and now had his own house, land, and garden, but if Lian Shouyi gave up this small inheritance to separate from the family, he would immediately be left with nothing.
"Let’s exempt Old Three from this, he’s different from the Old Fourth Family," Old Master Lian simply said.
"Dad, my father and my Fourth Uncle are both your sons. Whatever my Fourth Uncle gives, we will give too. We’re even willing to live in a shack right now," Lian Yeye quickly said.
Old Master Lian was suddenly at a loss for words.
"Dad, think about me and my mom, we also want to live a respectable life. If we miss out today, we’ll have to deal with my grandma’s control again in the future, and who will stand up for us then?" Lian Yeye cried, pulling at Lian Shouli’s clothes. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
Lian Yeye’s voice was not soft, and for a moment, there was dead silence in the room.
Old Master Lian’s hands began to tremble.
"Old Three, what kind of child are you raising? Listen to her, spouting such beastly talk. ’One takes on the color of one’s company,’ that’s what this is. Yeye, tell me, where did you learn all this?" Lian Shouren said, furiously.
He was fuming inside but didn’t dare vent his anger on Lian Shouxin’s family; however, he felt confident dealing with Lian Shouli’s family.
Lian Manman, who was listening by, couldn’t help but scoff secretly. Good one, Lian Shouren, his words had a hidden agenda, aiming to catch Lian Yeye out, and bring her family into the mix. Everyone knew that Lian Shouli was very close to Lian Shouxin, and Lady Zhao and Lian Yeye practically lived at Lian’s Bun Shop.
It was clear to Lian Manman that Lian Shouren was picking on the easy targets, aiming to benefit from Lian Shouli and Lian Yeye, and even potentially looking for a way to turn the tables.
"Black pig, red pig, I never went to school, I don’t know about that. I learned all these words from you, Big Uncle," retorted Lian Yeye, not intimidated by Lian Shouren at all—she felt confident now. Lian Shouxin and Lian Manman had both agreed to back her up this time.
With others to support her, she was of course going to redouble her efforts. She wasn’t going to let anyone use her to attack those kind to her. Lian Yeye might be young, but she knew right from wrong.
Moreover, since the day she fought with Si Lang, Lian Yeye knew she was different from Lian Manman; her parents were weaker than Lian Manman’s, who only had her as a child, whereas Lian Manman had the support of an elder sister and two brothers. Lian Manman’s family now had a status, while her family was still just ordinary tenant farmers.
She didn’t have as many concerns as Lian Manman, nor could she afford to, for if she did, she would be oppressed her entire life.
"Borrowing usurious loans for a daughter’s marriage, enjoying life hidden away in the city, while making my grandpa and our whole family, including the separated Old Fourth Family, pay it back, pushing my grandpa to the brink of desperation—that’s what you did, isn’t it Big Uncle? My grandpa works the fields with us, while you sleep in at home! Sneaking around buying property in town, hiring people, making my grandpa and us pay for it!" Lian Yeye pointed at Lian Shouren and rattled off a litany of accusations, "And you have been speaking behind our backs with Big Aunt, saying living with my grandpa and grandma is like falling into a well, that it would be better to take all the money and ditch the people at home once you take office..."
The room was full of shocked faces.
Old Master Lian’s face turned ashen.
Lian Shouren, seething with embarrassment and anger, leaped to his feet, poised to strike Lian Yeye.
"Nonsense, utter nonsense. You unfilial girl..."
Of course, the people in the room couldn’t stand by and watch Lian Shouren strike a child, so someone stepped forward to pull him away.
"I’ve only talked about a few things, there’s even more..." Lian Yeye, hiding behind Lian Shouli, her heart pounding and her voice trembling slightly—not out of fear but out of excitement—continued.
"Dad, just like what was done for Old Fourth, write one for me too," Lian Shouli said, looking down at Lian Yeye, then glancing out the door, where he saw Lady Zhao standing there with teary eyes.
Lian Shouli was honest and slow to react, but he wasn’t stupid. There was a fresh scratch, bloody and deeper than Lian Shouxin’s, on his face now. Lian Shouli was aware that although his household didn’t have the resources of Lian Shouxin’s, they also didn’t have the backing. Lian Yeye’s words had offended Lady Zhou, Old Master Lian, Lian Shouren, and Lady Gu. If he didn’t make a clean break today, Lian Yeye would suffer in the future—and so would he and Lady Zhao.
To leave with nothing, to live cleanly and solely for their family of three from now on.
"Write the document for Old Three as well," the Old Master, sitting on the bed, said somewhat weakly.
"Children speak without restraint. You’re a scholar, why bother quarreling with an illiterate little girl," someone advised Lian Shouren. Everyone nodded along, but their attitudes were somewhat perfunctory.
The true character of Lian Shouren was now clear to all. He was not someone to associate with closely, but as he was about to become an official, no one wanted to offend him to his face.
Of course, Old Jin was an exception.
Shopkeeper Wu picked up the brush again and wrote another document identical to the first for Lian Shouli, then handed it to Old Master Lian to review.
"I don’t have much else to say," Old Master Lian said after reviewing the document, his voice slow, "except that there needs to be a clause stating that Old Fourth must agree to always take care of his Third Brother no matter what."
"If Old Fourth agrees to this clause, I will put my thumbprint on the document," Old Master Lian declared, looking up at everyone.
