Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 803 - 409: Talking about Relatives_2
"What places did you mention to Caiyun?" Lady Wu Wang asked.
Lady Zhang Wang mentioned two places, both not far from Burner Pot Village and both mountain villages.
"Right, would you be willing to let Caiyun come this way?" Lady Wu Wang asked again.
"Come this way?"
"It means a bit farther from you, but she has her eldest aunt here. There’s no difference being with you or not," Lady Wu Wang said.
Lady Zhang Wang glanced at Lady Li, then at Lady Zhang, and immediately smiled.
"If we can find someone from around here, there’s nothing else to say. I’d feel more at ease with her staying by her eldest aunt’s side than with us," Lady Zhang Wang said.
Lian Lanlan brought up several topics, intending to steer the conversation towards what she wanted to discuss. But despite the lively chatter, the topic was drifting further away from the important matter she wanted to talk about.
"Speaking of engagements, Manman and Wu Lang, I think it’s about time to settle theirs," Lian Lanlan said.
"These two children are not in a hurry to talk about it," Lady Zhang replied, "Wu Lang and Manman are still young, our household has only just started to improve, Zhizhi has got engaged, and I want to keep her for two more years before she leaves, Manman needs to stay even longer... As for Wu Lang, let the boy focus on his studies first, we’ll discuss his marriage matters later."
"Manman’s marriage is easy to arrange with her Third Aunt Wu and her maternal uncle, they can easily pick a good match... but for our Wu Lang, choosing a bride is a major event. It’s best to find someone from a known background, look at the match early, and once it’s settled, we can be at ease," Lian Lanlan said, her eyes twinkling with a smile.
Lady Wu Wang and Lady Zhang Wang exchanged a glance and couldn’t help but smile.
"Wu Lang’s wife needs to be carefully sought out. After all, Wu Lang is the eldest, and his wife will later be in charge of household management. I have to be able to trust her to handle the whole family. I’m thinking, we should find someone who is the eldest sister in her home, someone who can take charge of both household and outside affairs, and can look after her younger brothers and sisters. She should be capable," Lady Zhang said, eyes slightly downcast.
"That’s exactly the plan," Lady Wu Wang chuckled, "Look at the eldest sister, isn’t she the perfect example? She managed her younger siblings at home, well-known for her efficiency and capability. And ever since she got married, she’s someone who can stand at the head of the household, a proper wife in charge."
Lian Lanlan had no choice but to laugh along.
They sat for a while longer, but nobody got up to leave. Lian Lanlan started to get restless; it was getting late, and she might have to travel at night. Not to mention whether she could leave her shop unattended, Lady Zhang had not yet invited her to stay over.
Insisting on staying wasn’t impossible, but what Lady Zhang said today had essentially blocked Lian Lanlan’s words. If she were to speak up, she would have to go to Lian Shouxin. Lian Shouxin should be capable of keeping Lady Zhang’s household, but with Lady Li present, it would also be troublesome.
Lian Lanlan wanted to get off the kang (traditional Chinese bed-stove).
"Eldest sister, are you leaving?" Lady Wu Wang asked.
"Quickly call the coach for elder sister," Lady Zhang Wang immediately said. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
Lian Manman and the other children were in the west room, and upon hearing Lian Lanlan should leave, they also followed everyone out to see her off. The coachman, having already received the message, was bringing the carriage over; Lian Shouxin was waiting at the door with Luo Baocai and Jin Suo.
Lian Lanlan quickly exchanged a look with Luo Baocai.
The carriage arrived and stopped in front of everyone.
"Eldest sister, it’s not easy for you to visit; stay a couple of days before leaving," said Lady Zhang, glancing towards Lian Shouxin and smiling at Lian Lanlan.
"I also asked elder sister and brother-in-law to rest for a night or two before leaving. But brother-in-law insists that he can’t be away from the shop, no matter what, he has to leave," Lian Shouxin said with a smile.
"No need to stay, we will some other time, whenever we are free," Lian Lanlan said cheerfully and waved to Lian Shouxin, "Old Fourth, come here, I have a few words to tell you."
Lian Lanlan walked ahead, while Lian Shouxin followed. They moved far enough away from the crowd, presumably out of earshot, and Lian Lanlan stopped.
"Elder sister, what’s the matter?" Lian Shouxin asked.
In the Lian Family, Lian Shouren was the eldest brother and a Scholar; his status at home was self-evident. Although Lian Lanlan was a married daughter, her position in the Lian Family was only second to Lian Shouren.
This was a rule set by Lady Zhou.
When Lady Zhou was at home, she often kept Lian Lanlan in mind and mentioned her often, placing her at the forefront in both word and deed. Lady Zhou protected Lian Lanlan’s interests tightly and placed her status very high.
For instance, each year when seasonal produce was due, Lady Zhou would pick the finest and have her sons deliver them to Lian Lanlan. If the household had anything good, a portion would be set aside for Lian Lanlan first.
Although Lian Lanlan had married out, she was involved in Lian Family affairs because she could influence Lady Zhou. The relationship between Lian Lanlan, Lian Shouren, and Lady Gu’s family was extremely good. That Lian Huahua was able to marry Song Hailong was largely thanks to Lian Lanlan.
Every year, when Lian Shouxin and his brothers sent local products to the city, Lian Lanlan would organize a lavish meal, treating them exceptionally well.
Habitually, Lian Lanlan commanded respect from her younger brothers and her word was influential.
"Old Fourth," Lian Lanlan paused slightly, glanced at the crowd waiting in the distance. Lady Zhang stood at the door with the children, seemingly whispering; none of them looked towards them. Luo Baocai stood next to the carriage with Jin Suo and Yin Suo, all watching her.
"Old Fourth, did your brother-in-law mention it to you?" Lian Lanlan withdrew her gaze and asked Lian Shouxin.
"Mention what?"
"Your brother-in-law, about Manman’s marriage," Lian Lanlan said.
"Oh, that, this matter," Lian Shouxin involuntarily turned his head, looking over at the carriage. Lady Zhang and the children were together; Luo Baocai stood with Jin Suo and Yin Suo.
The two groups were distinctly separate. Clearly, they were not close.
