Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 809 - 412: Cotton Padding_2
Lian Shouxin’s heart shattered instantaneously.
His beloved good little son, Xiao Qi, who always liked to cling to him, was now ignoring him.
Lian Shouxin almost involuntarily followed behind Xiao Qi.
"Xiao Qi, you greeted everyone, how come you’re not greeting your dad?" Lian Shouxin chased after him, asking Xiao Qi.
Xiao Qi turned his head and pursed his lips. He didn’t speak, only accusing Lian Shouxin with his eyes.
"Xiao Qi, let’s go, or we’ll be late," Wu Lang shouted from up ahead.
"Oh, coming." Xiao Qi agreed and ran off without giving Lian Shouxin another look.
Lian Shouxin was left standing there as the wind of late autumn carried a few fallen leaves in a whirl at his feet before blowing them away.
After tidying up the dining table, Lady Zhang instructed Lady Zhao and Lian Yeye with a few words, before going back to the Pickled Vegetable Workshop. Now that the Lian Family’s Pickled Vegetable Workshop had re-opened, Lady Zhang mainly managed things over there, while the Lian’s Breakfast Shop was looked after by Lian Shouxin.
Lian Shouxin dared not stop Lady Zhang, but he did stop Lady Li.
Lady Li always had to show respect for her son-in-law.
"Mother." Lady Li sat on the kang bed, and Lian Shouxin sat on the edge, turning his body towards her. "...His aunt did mention it, doing kin as kin. But I didn’t agree. I was chatting with the children’s mother, and I don’t know what happened, but she got so mad all of a sudden."
"Doing kin as kin, that should be well-intentioned." Lady Li spoke gently and slowly. "Every family should know what their own child is like. In matters of marriage, compatibility is key. If you’re at a disadvantage, you can’t let others be unfairly treated. If the children are not suitable for each other, it’ll be a lifetime of dissatisfaction. Flesh of the palm and the back of the hand, both are flesh... We have to match Manman with someone decent at least. Those who are much worse off shouldn’t come knocking on our door, right?"
Lady Li’s words were full of subtlety, making it clear that what Lian Lanlan did was improper and that Jin Suo was not a worthy match for Manman, but in a manner befitting Lady Li’s style. Of course, had it been Lady Zhou, she would definitely be scolding bluntly at this point.
However, Lian Shouxin clearly understood Lady Li’s meaning.
"Our own daughters are flesh from our bodies. Shortchanging ourselves is one thing, but a mistake in our daughter’s life, how would a mother feel? That’s more painful than carving out a piece of her own flesh. You men are less sensitive to these things, hmm..."
As Lady Li spoke, she put on her shoes to get off the kang bed. Although there were many more words in her heart, Lady Li could not say everything. Even the few words she could say, she didn’t delve deeper.
"Between husband and wife, there’s no grudge that lasts overnight. Once things are talked through, it’ll be fine. You go on and take care of your tasks."
"Mother, this matter, it’s my fault. My wife has always been so accommodating to me, to everyone in my family. Mother, now that you’ve explained, I understand," Lian Shouxin quickly stood up and said.
"As long as you understand, as long as you do." Lady Li said with a smile.
Lian Zhizhi, Lian Manman and Zhang Caiyun accompanied Lady Li out of the shop’s backyard, around the vegetable garden, through the west side courtyard gate into the house, and took the opportunity to check on the Pickled Vegetable Workshop on the way.
In the Pickled Vegetable Workshop, Lady Zhang was busily leading the work. This year they were all veterans from last year, and everyone stopped to greet them with smiles upon their arrival.
"Everyone’s so efficient," Lady Li said with a smile, "you all carry on with your work."
Because she was mindful not to delay their work, Lady Li took a brief look and then left.
"Mother, you go ahead, I’ll be there in a bit," Lady Zhang said.
"You go ahead with your work, having Zhizhi and Manman with me is enough," Lady Li said.
Back in the inner courtyard, everyone gathered in the eastern room. The sun had already risen, and its light shone through the colored glass windows, filling the kang bed with warmth and brightening up the two connected rooms.
"These colored glass windows are the best, they let in so much light," said Lady Li as she got onto the kang bed.
As she spoke, Lady Li opened a large bundle on the kang. The bundle contained several cotton wads wrapped with paper, and several pieces of precut fabric. Lady Li chose one of the fabrics and spread it out on the kang.
It was the lining of a heavyweight cotton-padded jacket, and by its size, it appeared to be for Lian Shouxin.
Lady Li then unwrapped a cotton wad and tore off a large piece to place atop the jacket lining. She then deftly tore the cotton into thin layers and carefully stuffed and layered them onto the lining. Lian Zhizhi and Zhang Caiyun also picked up another precut lining, working together to stuff cotton.
Lian Manman wasn’t in a hurry to get onto the kang. She first placed a small kang table on it, then took a teapot, filled it with some tea leaves from a nearby tea box, and went out to the stove in the outer room where a big kettle of water was already boiling. Lian Manman took a cloth from a shelf, put it over the handle of the kettle, and poured the water from the kettle into the teapot.
With the pour of the hot water, the aroma of the tea leaves quickly wafted up from the teapot.
After brewing a pot of hot tea, Lian Manman put the kettle back on the stove top and added more water to keep it boiling, then carried the teapot back inside.
Placing the teapot and several tea bowls on the kang table, Lian Manman also brought over a box of various snacks and fruits, and set them up on the kang.
"Grandmother, have some tea and snacks. Sister Caiyun, have some tea and snacks," Lian Manman called out.
Lian Manman also climbed onto the kang, sitting next to Lady Li. After watching for a while, she began to mimic Lady Li by stuffing cotton into the jacket lining.
"Grandma, do you know why my mom doesn’t get along with my aunt?" Lian Manman asked softly.
