Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 811 - 413 Venting Frustration_2
"Mom, just speak your mind, we’re all listening attentively," Lian Manman said.
"How should I put it, I’m not one to sing my own praises... but I can get along with anyone, and I never lose my cool. But with his aunt, for some reason, I just can’t seem to get along."
"His aunt is the quintessential smooth operator, everyone says she’s great. If anyone speaks ill of her, they don’t say it to her face, and behind her back, they think it’s not because the aunt is bad, but the other person is at fault."
"His aunt has never cursed or hit me. But towards her, I feel..." Lady Zhang paused for a moment, seemingly unable to find the right words to describe her feelings.
"She doesn’t need to curse or hit, she smiles in your face, but behind your back, it’s just a look or a word from her that makes you..." Lady Zhang shuddered and paused again.
"Mom, are you saying that she’s especially sneaky?" Lian Manman asked.
"Exactly, especially sneaky. I don’t know how, but she has this skill where even though you know she tricked you, you can’t point out anything bad about her," Lady Zhang nodded in agreement.
"Nothing but a smiling tiger!" Zhang Caiyun interjected.
"A smiling tiger still has that bad reputation though, but Zhizhi, his aunt, has maintained quite a good social standing," Lady Li said.
Lian Manman nodded, understanding. Lian Lanlan must have caused Lady Zhang distress, making life difficult for her, but smartly leaving Lady Zhang with no solid evidence to complain about.
"Your grandma and your old aunt can be overbearing and unreasonable, but it’s all out in the open. They are straightforward. Everyone can see it clearly, and I’m not afraid of that. It’s his aunt, the kind of person I fear," Lady Zhang said.
"Killing without drawing blood, eating without spitting out the bones," said Lian Manman. There are many ways to describe such people, like having a fire on the surface but a knife in the dark, or a smile on the face with a stabbing hand, and so on.
Such people indeed have a powerful impact, for instance, Lady Zhang suffered but couldn’t voice her troubles. Compared to someone like Lady Zhou, who wears everything on her face, she even seems somewhat endearing.
Lady Zhou ended up being compared to being endearing, Lian Manman touched her forehead, then quickly shook her head to dismiss the thought.
"That’s exactly it," Lady Zhang nodded, "It’s such people that I fear and loathe. Seeing her, I just want to walk the other way."
Lian Manman nodded.
Lady Zhang must seem quite foolish in Lian Lanlan’s eyes. But it’s easy to deceive someone once or twice, almost impossible to fool them for a lifetime.
No matter how cunning and crafty Lian Lanlan’s schemes are, the simple Lady Zhang has still seen through her wickedness. What about others? Even if no one says it out loud, they surely take note. Even if they are polite on the surface and even exchange pleasantries, in the background, who wouldn’t be extra cautious around such a person?
Especially someone as kind-hearted as Lady Zhang, she instinctually detests such people.
Lady Zhang was moved to see everyone believing her and standing by her side.
"I thought that since I was speaking so vaguely, you all might not believe me," Lady Zhang said.
"You, you’re my daughter, how could I not know you?" Lady Li said.
"Mom, we of course believe you. Not just us, if you talk to other people in our village, I’m sure they’ll believe you too," Lian Manman added.
Having vented about the misery she couldn’t previously express, Lady Zhang suddenly felt relieved.
"Why bother talking about our own family matters to outsiders. We all know what kind of person she is, that’s enough," Lady Zhang began batting cotton again, "...She even wants to become even closer relatives with me, knowing what kind of person she is, how could I push my own daughter or son into that fire pit, it might as well be under her grandma’s thumb."
After fussing with cotton for half the day, everyone still went to the shop to eat their midday meal as usual.
At the dining table, Lady Zhang still gave Lian Shouxin the cold shoulder. Everyone at the table, including Lady Zhao and Lian Yeye, already knew what had happened, so they all silently ate their meal.
After the meal, Lian Shouxin could no longer hold back. Taking advantage of the moment Lady Zhang went to the kitchen to wash dishes, he followed her. Everyone knew Lian Shouxin must have something to say to Lady Zhang, so they tactfully avoided them.
"My child’s mother, I know I was wrong. It was indeed her... Yes, she was in the wrong for bringing up that matter. I thought it was enough that I didn’t agree to it; I didn’t consider how you felt, which was my mistake," Lian Shouxin softly apologized to Lady Zhang.
Lady Zhang bowed her head washing dishes, though she did not look up, she listened carefully to every single word from Lian Shouxin.
"Actually, I haven’t said this to you before. Hearing his aunt mention it like that, I felt uneasy in my heart too. I think saying such things put our Manman at a disadvantage. How is our Manman compared to Jin Suo? It was inappropriate for her to bring this up."
Lady Zhang’s expression softened a lot with her back facing Lian Shouxin.
"Is that it?" asked Lady Zhang.
"There’s more," Lian Shouxin saw that Lady Zhang finally addressed him, and he was immediately overjoyed. "Rest assured, I didn’t agree this time, and I definitely won’t agree in the future. It doesn’t matter who comes to propose, I won’t accept. Not just for Manman, but even if someone targets our Wu Lang and Xiao Qi, that also won’t do."
"Hmph, at least you somewhat act like a father," said Lady Zhang, with a hint of a smile on her face. "Is that everything? What else is there?"
Lian Shouxin was momentarily baffled.
"What else could there be but this matter?"
The smile on Lady Zhang’s face disappeared instantaneously, she stood up leaving the half-washed dishes behind.
"Third Auntie," Lady Zhang called out to Lady Zhao, "I have some matter in my yard; could you finish washing these dishes for me?"
"Yes, of course," Lady Zhao hastily agreed.
Lady Zhang wiped her hands and went back to the room to summon Lady Li, Lian Zhizhi, Lian Manman, and Zhang Caiyun, then headed home. Wu Lang and Xiao Qi hurriedly picked up their schoolbags, said they were going to school, and ran off.
Lian Shouxin had thought that by admitting his mistake, he could reconcile with Lady Zhang, but unexpectedly, she seemed even angrier, and everybody ignored him.
Lian Shouxin was at a loss, watching as everyone left the house, with only Lian Manman lagging behind because she was teasing the nursing cat Da Hua.
"Manman, you have to help Dad," Lian Shouxin suddenly pleaded as if clinging to a lifesaver.
