Reborn as a Weak Earthling, I Became the Most Overpowered Mage Alive-Chapter 78: Ch : The Human Children - Part 1
The peace cooperation’s office did not strike Andrew as fancy or something new. From the decorations on the wall to people running around, it seemed like an ordinary office.
And yet, there was a subtle tension in the air that warned him that something weird was going on here.
[Warning: You have entered someone’s energy field. Effect on the user: None.]
Andrew tensed as soon as he saw that text on the system screen. He had sensed the energy around him, but he had not expected someone to be actually using their abilities.
"Did you sense the energy field already? Don’t worry. It has been cast around the building for our protection, not to harm us. Still, I won’t fault you for being on edge since this is foreign territory for you."
Thief told Andrew, and Queen tightened her grip on her blade. The tension in the air worsened, but both sides did not react.
Andrew was led to a metallic door, and Thief wasted no time opening it. Inside, there were more than a dozen chairs, but no human present.
As soon as Andrew entered, the room lit up and, one by one, holograms appeared sitting on top of the chairs.
"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for waiting for me. As promised, I have brought the person who can become our biggest help during this upcoming crisis. This is Mark Dawnson, and he’s the person I would like to recommend as our organization’s face."
There was a tense silence that followed Thief’s recommendation. The holograms exchanged looks with their notes, and a lot of them did not look happy.
"I know this person. He’s ranked #2 on the leaderboard. I have to admit that he’s a good choice, but are you sure he’s the right one? Being in an organization is about cooperation and finding balance with others, and your... recommendation seems like a lone wolf."
One of the holograms spoke, her voice filled with curiosity and hesitation.
Her beliefs were shared by everyone else, and they silently backed her up, but not because they were worried about the project itself. Rather, everyone wanted their own chosen person to be the face of The Peace Organization.
After all, only once they had influence could they start taking control of the situation little by little.
Andrew saw through their act, but he chose not to do anything. He wanted to see what Thief would do in such a situation.
But instead of panicking, Thief remained quiet and clapped back at the doubters.
"Oh-! Then who would you suggest we put as a face, my lady? Surely not a lacking individual who does not even know what they are doing? As our representative, the one who becomes our face will have to uphold themselves in public. Can you guarantee that your candidate will be able to sway people with their charisma and power?"
"Of course he will. After all, he has a handsome face and is soft-spoken-"
"But does he have the power? We are in a time when a handsome face and good manners are not enough. If your candidate does not have the power to back his claim, then he would die before he even makes it out of the next game."
Thief’s warning was not only for the lady, but for everyone. He was silently telling others to bring better reasoning if they wanted to argue with him.
And people quickly picked up on his words and decided to drop the topic. Instead, they turned their attention toward Andrew.
"So, what benefits can your choice bring us? Mark Dawnson might be ranked #2 on the leaderboard, but I am not sure if we can trust him. What if our opinions do not align?"
Another board member asked, trying his own luck as well.
But Thief shot him down.
"There are no two people in the world whose beliefs and goals align 100%, but as long as we are walking toward the same goal, we will find a way to cooperate. I told you before, my ability will lead our way into the future. All you have to do is trust me. Soon, humanity will become the dominant force in this game."
Thief sounded more and more sure by the second. His will clashed with the rest of the council, but his unwillingness to back down made it difficult for them to suggest their own words.
clap
"Well, I am convinced. I would like to give Mark Dawnson a chance."
The person sitting at the opposite end of the council table suddenly spoke up. Her hand had remained silent until now, and everyone immediately turned to look at her.
"M-Madam! But-!"
"Are you sure?"
"You should reconsider..."
People told her to change her mind, but they did not openly ask her to back out.
"Did you all forget? I am the backbone of this operation, and I have decided. We will have Mark Dawnson as our face. His presence will serve our cause well."
Andrew felt like a specimen being fought over by people he did not like. He immediately frowned as he heard the others speak about him.
Something inside him curled up in discomfort, and he objected.
"Aren’t you all forgetting to ask me whether I want to participate or not in this experiment? That sounds like a huge oversight on your part. What if I don’t want to help you out?"
There was tense silence around the table, and then chaos erupted.
"How dare you-"
"You ungrateful brat-"
The hologram at the end of the table raised her hand, and everyone else fell quiet all of a sudden. Slowly, all other hologram connections were cut off until only the person at the end of the table was left.
"Now that we have some peace and quiet once more, I would like to continue our conversation. Thief, why don’t you and Andrew swing by our lab. I would like to show him just how much potential our organization and future hold."
The female hologram also turned herself off, and Thief sighed.
"I did not think that this time would come so soon. But I guess we better do this now. Come, I will show you the true face of The Peace Organization."
