Chapter 1283: Chapter 1285: Just Sell It to Them

At the entrance of Yang Family village, a middle-aged man entered the village looking dejected, carrying a burlap sack on his back.

As he passed the large square, a group of gossiping women called out to him, "Hey, isn’t this Huizi from Lan Hua’s family? Are you back from the town? Went to sell those hard fruits, right? How did it go?"

Huizi didn’t dare say he hadn’t sold anything, so he just smiled foolishly and responded perfunctorily, "It went alright."

Seeing the full sack unchanged on Huizi’s back, everyone could tell nothing had been sold at all.

"Huizi, it’s not like auntie wants to criticize you, but what are you bothering to carry back and forth for? Look at those few households, they sent their hard fruits to the Yang Family and even got paid for it. If your family does the same, you wouldn’t get paid any less."

Huizi just smiled silently; everyone had been talking about this issue lately, and of course his family knew about it.

But his mother wasn’t agreeing, insisting he carry these hard fruits to town to sell, yet no one in town would buy them, so he had no choice but to bring them back over and over again.

Seeing Huizi remain silent, the woman continued speaking, "Your mother actually expects those hard fruits to be sold for Silver, huh? How much Silver have you sold for these days?"

"Heh, not much, umm, I’ll be heading back first." Huizi had totally lost face to stay here any longer, so he made an awkward excuse and walked towards home carrying the sack.

He felt utterly embarrassed, because of this incident, their family had been gossiped about a lot by the villagers, saying their family was not being decent, going against the Yang Family, and lots of unpleasant remarks.

Not having walked far, Huizi arrived home and pushed the door open.

Aunt Lan Hua greeted him, initially intending to ask how the selling had gone, but upon seeing the bulging sack on her son’s back, she knew how it had ended.

Seeing his mother, Huizi said helplessly, "Mom, let’s stop taking these hard fruits to town to sell, no one is going to buy them anyway. Why don’t we send all of these to Yang Family too? We’ve worked long enough, we might even get a tael of Silver."

Upon hearing this, Aunt Lan Hua vehemently replied, "What do you know? You don’t bother with this matter." 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

"Mom, haven’t you heard what people are saying about our family outside? They’re saying we’re not decent, knowing full well that the Yangs are going to buy that hill, yet we went to pick those hard fruits, and if Yang Family has any profitable matters in the future, we won’t be included. Are you not planning to sell those big cabbages? If you ask me, we should hurry and send them over now, or else it’ll be difficult to send them later. Yang Ming’s wife holds grudges, remember last time those women workers making sauerkraut offended her, and now they can’t find work in the workshop."

Huizi’s persuasion not only failed but also irked his mother, "You’re talking nonsense, they haven’t bought the mountain yet. I can pick from the mountain as I wish; my own stuff, and I’m wrong not to send it now? Where can I find justice in this? If they want those hard fruits, they can come buy them."

Huizi felt helpless, reasoning strongly as it was, but the Yang Family had grown influential in the village, and it was best not to provoke them. What would the future look like then? "Mom, how can they buy? Those hard fruits aren’t sellable, there’s no use in buying them, and anyway, I’ve heard they pay wages because people aren’t taking the hard fruits away; they can’t just take others’ stuff and only then pay the wages."

"Alright, don’t bother with this anymore, tomorrow you won’t be going to sell hard fruits."
