-------------------------------------

It was nighttime in the lower part of the city, where poor and lower-middle-class people lived. The streets were narrow, and the houses were small and built very close to each other. The ground wasn't clean, and many homes didn't even have proper beds. Some families had to sleep on the floor, while others squeezed five people into a single bed.

Even though it was late, the streets were full of life. People were outside their homes, chatting, smiling, and looking in one direction — at someone special who had come to their area.

The reason everyone was so cheerful tonight was because two well-dressed people had arrived in the neighborhood. They looked clean and tidy, like aristocrats, and were walking around asking questions. Everyone was curious and hopeful, and some were even waiting eagerly for their turn to talk.

"So we'll really get free rations and help for our area?" a woman asked with wide eyes. Her voice was filled with hope, but also a bit of doubt.

The girl standing in front of her smiled kindly and nodded. She was tall and had a strong, muscular body, but her curves made her look beautiful too. Her skin was dark, and her short brown hair made her look neat and brave. She was wearing a school uniform — the uniform of a well-known academy.

This girl was Maruti.

"Yep, yep! You might even get a small pension for a few months," Maruti said softly. "The people living here don't earn enough to live properly, so we're going to help."

The woman's face lit up with a gentle smile. "My name is Oliviya Kartz," she said warmly.

Maruti wrote her name down on the paper she was carrying. "How many family members do you have?" she asked, her tone gentle and professional.

Oliviya answered right away, "It's just me and my two kids. One girl and one boy. They're sleeping right now — do you want me to wake them up and bring them here?"

Maruti quickly shook her head. "No, no need. Let them sleep. That's okay," she said kindly.

Then she looked up again and asked, "What about your husband?"

Suddenly, Oliviya's smile disappeared. Her shoulders dropped, and her eyes looked down. A quiet sadness filled her face.

"He died five years ago," she said in a soft, almost broken voice. "Back then, we still had a small house in a better area. But after he passed, I couldn't afford to live there anymore. I had no choice but to move here..."

Maruti listened carefully, her heart heavy from hearing the story.

"You didn't marry again?" she asked gently.

Oliviya shook her head slowly. "No. I really loved my husband. He was a good man, a kind man. Even though he's gone, I just... I can't imagine being with anyone else. So I decided I wouldn't marry again."

Her voice trembled a little at the end, but she smiled faintly, as if trying to be strong.

Maruti's eyes lit up with excitement as she heard Oliviya's touching words. "Ohh, Quit the devotee aren't you?, You deserve more!", Saying so, She turned her head and shouted loudly across the street.

"Hey! Fable!"

She waved one arm, yelling, "I found a woman! She's a widow and never married again because she really loved her husband!"

Oliviya's face turned red in embarrassment, and her eyes widened. "W-Wait! You don't have to say that out loud!" she said, looking around nervously at the curious people nearby.

Across the street, Esdeath — known as "Fable" by Maruti — heard the shout. She was busy taking notes for their survey, but the moment she heard what Maruti said, her head turned.

Without warning, Esdeath started running towards them at a steady speed.

Oliviya raised her hands slightly, trying to calm her down. "Wait, there's no need to rush. I'm not going anywhere—"

But before she could even finish her sentence, Esdeath suddenly leapt into the air.

Out of nowhere, a large axe appeared in Esdeath's hands — as if it was summoned by magic.

"Wha—?"

Oliviya's words got stuck in her throat.

KWACK!

A loud and horrifying sound echoed in the narrow streets.

Esdeath brought the axe down straight onto Oliviya's face — slicing her entire body clean in half.

Blood burst out like a fountain, splashing across the street. It sprayed onto Esdeath's pale face and even got on Maruti's uniform. The air was filled with the smell of blood and the sharp silence of shock.

"Yuck... What's with the rush?" Maruti muttered, wiping blood from her arm. "We could've killed her later. There was no need to be in such a hurry."

People around them gasped and screamed. An old woman was the first to shout.

"She killed her! That girl... She really killed her!"

Men from the nearby houses and alleys started to gather, some angry, others frozen in place. But many others turned and ran for their lives, afraid they would be next.

One man stepped forward, fists clenched, voice shaking in fear and anger. "You! You're a student from the Academy, aren't you?! Do you think just because you're nobles, you can do whatever you—"

BAM!

A gunshot rang out, cutting through his words.

Esdeath had already drawn a gun and fired at the man's head. He dropped to the ground instantly, dead before he could finish his sentence.

"So what?" Esdeath said coldly, looking around at the remaining people. "Is there anyone here who can stop me?" frёeweɓηovel.coɱ

Her icy voice sent chills down everyone's spine.

The rest of the men ran away without a second thought. People watching from their balconies ducked back inside. Doors slammed shut. Curtains were pulled. But curious eyes still peeked through small cracks in windows, too scared to say anything.

Esdeath wiped her face calmly and turned around. "Let's go, Predictor," she said.

Maruti, still blinking in surprise, quickly followed her.

Once they walked past the lower streets and reached a quieter area, Maruti finally asked, "Why did we even kill that woman? And right in front of everyone too. What if someone tells the guards or reports us?"

But Esdeath only gave a small laugh and scoffed.

"Our status is already way above this street trash," she said without any care. "Ever since we awakened our powers, we're not the same as them anymore. And now that I'm married to Lortell... even killing an awakened person wouldn't matter. We're almost untouchable legally."

Maruti frowned. "You still didn't answer me. Why did we kill that woman?"

Esdeath looked at her with a half-smile. "For power, of course."

She stopped walking and looked up at the night sky.

"You see, essence stones... Some of them have recipes. You can make them using special materials. But not all of them are made like that."

She looked back at Maruti and pointed toward her chest.

"Sometimes, certain strange conditions creates an essence stone inside someone. Just like yours."

Maruti blinked, confused. "What? My... what?"

"You have an essence stone in your heart," Esdeath said casually. "That stone was created because of you and your feelings."

Maruti suddenly panicked. "W-Wait! What?! I have something in my heart?! Is it like a tumor?! Am I going to die?!"

Esdeath rolled her eyes and sighed. "Of course not, idiot. I'll explain everything later. But first, shut up and listen."

"An innocent child, a widow who never gave her heart to anyone other than her husband, and a virgin awakened girl," Esdeath said calmly, like she was reading out a list of ingredients for a recipe.

"If you kill them, a special condition is met. That's how you awaken the Cannibalistic Spirit essence stone in your soul. Once it's awakened, you can absorb power from the souls of others—people, animals, beasts, even demons—to make your own soul stronger. As for where to find those souls, that's your choice," Esdeath explained with a cold tone, like it was nothing serious.

Maruti's eyes widened. She tapped her chin and thought for a second. "Ohhh! So now we only need to kill a child and a virgin awakened girl. Wait, didn't you already kill Luna? She was probably a virgin, right? So that just leaves the kid!"

Suddenly, Esdeath stopped walking.

She didn't say anything. Her face went blank, and she gave Maruti a long, empty stare.

Maruti blinked in confusion and looked into Esdeath's eyes. Then a sudden thought hit her.

"...So you already killed a kid?" she asked slowly.

"Long ago," Esdeath replied with a short nod before turning and walking again.

She remembered that moment clearly. She had thrown a small child off a mountain, without a second thought. But back then, she didn't know that the child's mother was a widow. That was the only reason the woman had been spared.

If she had known... she would have killed the mother too.

Maruti walked beside her, the sound of their footsteps echoing lightly on the quiet street.

"So... are we going to kill people every day now and collect their souls?" Maruti asked, sounding more curious than afraid.

"Of course not," Esdeath replied without looking at her. "Let's take it slow. We have time. And it's not like I need rely on only souls anyway. There are other essence stones too—like Guts Essence and Bravery Essence. They can also make the soul stronger and of course since I have this essence stone one me, I will get 20% Extra Boost!."

"Ohhhh..." Maruti opened her mouth in a big "O" shape, her face showing exaggerated interest.

Esdeath scoffed a little and teased her. "Jealous? You can try it too if you want."

But Maruti quickly shook her head, a grin on her lips. "Nah... killing weaklings doesn't sound fun."

They kept walking side by side in silence for a while.

It wasn't long before the tall gates of the academy came into view. The lower streets were quite close, so the walk wasn't far. The grand gates stood ahead in the distance, and they slowly made their way toward them.

Maruti had another thought and stepped ahead a little, turning her head to look at Esdeath.

"Hey... didn't you win that essence stone in the tournament? Why don't you just use that one instead?"

Esdeath's expression changed slightly. Her mind drifted back to that moment—when she had used the essence stone in her past timeline and things had gone terribly wrong. The real Esdeath had awakened, messed everything up, and everything nearly fell apart. Luckily, she had turned back time and corrected her mistake.

"Using that now wouldn't be smart. I'll save it for later," Esdeath said in a serious tone.

Maruti smirked. "You can give it to me if you—"

Before she could finish, a cold droplet of water landed on her face.

She looked up. In just a few seconds, the sky opened up and heavy rain started pouring down.

Maruti gasped. "It's raining! Let's hurry!"

She pulled her hand over her head and dashed toward the academy gates, her boots splashing in the forming puddles.

Esdeath stayed quiet, but followed behind her, the sound of rain hitting her skin, clothes, and hair as she walked through the storm but it also washed the blood from their body.
