Chapter 31: Malakti

After the meal, Siroos walked Cassandra back to her chamber.

"Do you have everything you require? If there is anything, let me know or tell Lana, if I am not around. She will be like your right hand," Siroos said, throwing the door open to her chamber.

Cassandra observed how he had not asked her to reach out to his mother. She simply nodded and took a step inside her space.

He followed and her heartbeat suddenly leapt up.

’Were they going to share the room?’ the question erupted in her brain and her body tensed at the mere thought.

Siroos was in a limbo of his own as he thoughtfully observed the room. His hand swept down his sharp stubbled jaw, scratching it.

"It’s not as fancy as your previous room but I will make it worthy for you."

Cassandra had moved further in, the nervousness gripped her as she turned to face him. There was so much she wished to ask him but was afraid of the answers.

"I like it. I am not that materialistic anyway," she answered, settling down in the wooden chair and facing Siroos. He still seemed to be contemplating what he needed to include more in her private chamber.

"I am aware but I don’t wish for you to feel that you have been lowered in status in any sense."

"I won’t," Cassandra reassured him, feeling affected by his care.

Love was something she had always craved but never received. She was a hopeless romantic but hid it well under a tough exterior. It was cracking with these tiny bits of care packages he kept throwing in her lap.

"Hmm!" He hummed deep in his buffed chest still staring at the walls.

"But I wish to understand what’s required of me. And the kind of relationship we have or will have," she asked with a thudding heart.

Siroos finally turned his attention towards her, his mesmerising eyes changed colours so fast that Cassandra was left spellbound for a second. The long lashes blinked and kissed the upper edges of his high cheekbones.

He remained frozen for a few seconds, staring at his mate with conflicted feelings. There was so much he needed to say to her too. A hefty amount they should plan together and yet he was lost on where to begin and how to explain what a sham he was.

He would prolong keeping her in the dark as long as he could. It would break him too seeing her broken once the truth came to the surface. He weighed his words wisely before uttering them.

"We will have a bonding ceremony in a few days. Where I will mark you as my Luna. Our souls will conjoin after the marking ritual, and we will be able to feel and understand each other more. The emotions will heighten, even for you."

He meaningfully paused, letting his words hit home. Cassandra, who was already affected by him in ways she was still trying to comprehend, wondered how elevated emotions would push them together. And how long before she would lose control and give in to his seductions?

She quietly stared back at him, letting him continue.

"My mother will guide you through the duties, later. Listen to her, she may appear stern at times but her heart is always in the right place." Siroos took a few steps forward, obscuring her view of every other object. Filling it only with his tall and broad figure.

He indeed was the ’King of the Desert’ as she had anticipated during their first meeting and now she was about to become his Queen.

"This is your home now, Cassandra. These people will soon be your people and I will ensure they will treat you better than the ones you have left behind."

Leaning down, Siroos held the armrest of her chair with his left hand and brought his face level with Cassandra’s.

His hand reached out and plucked a lock of her gold-streaked hair, wrapping it around his slender index finger he brought it to his plump lips and caressed it.

The scent of sage and sun-kissed sand invigorated her and she didn’t pull herself back.

"You will be my Malakti (Queen) and the Queen of my people," his soft murmurs left her breathless, literally.

Siroos continued.

"We are not an ordinary pack as you may have realised by now. All of us have been blessed with a different animal spirit alongside our wolf spirits. And I, being their Alpha, have bits of all of those spirits inside me. Hence, the reason I can shape-shift into any animal I wish to."

Cassandra listened to him, intrigued. The multi-colour look his eyes took was solely because of that. The spirit animals inside of him at times wished to take a peek at their mate.

She had grown up among mages, but she had never found someone as fascinating and ruthless as this man who called himself her mate.

"That explains it but why is your pack like that? I have never heard of such a pack before," Cassandra curiously asked as Siroos tucked the twirled lock behind her ear and let out a sigh of frustration.

In her heart, she could sense his discontent. The fine lines on his forehead had deepened and his meaty lips had thinned out as he began to explain.

"There is a curse on our pack, it has made us this way. We don’t know why it was placed on us but it has been going on for centuries."

Concern swept up on Cassandra’s face as she watched him with droopy eyes. Her heart skipped a few beats hearing that there was a curse on them.

"Can’t it be broken? What else does the curse do?" Cassandra asked, slightly perturbed.

But Siroos didn’t want to scare her more than she already was of him. It was a miracle she didn’t flinch when he had just touched her hair.

"That’s a story for another day. You should rest now," Siroos declared while straightening up.

It was already quite a challenge for him to restrain himself in her proximity and this was only going to grow. Self-restraint was dwindling the more time he spent in her nearness.

At times he wished she was like Stephanie so he would have a reason to dislike her.

But she was so different, so precious and all he wished was to protect her, to love her and to mate with her. To have himself buried deep inside her silkiness.

Jerking away those thoughts and thrusting them deep into a pit where they squirmed, wishing to be let loose.

Unwantedly he took a step back from her and then another. The ache in his heart intensified, the bond painfully writhed in his chest, propelling to take her in its grasp and splatter her to his chest.

To sleep with her tucked safely in his arms and yet he knew it would be playing with fire and the cost was way too high.

He watched her from a distance until she had settled in the small bedding he had created for her. Seeing she had laid down and was gazing at him with emotions he didn’t want to unfurl. Siroos blew out the candles and slowly whispered before leaving and slowly closing the door behind him.

"Good night, Malakti. (My queen)"
