Chapter 153: Chapter 154: The Depressed Pei Siyang

Before Shao He could ask her question, Zhao Yuebei suddenly came over with a prescription to inquire, interrupting her train of thought.

“Doctor Shao, take a look at this prescription. Is there anything wrong with it?” Zhao Yuebei handed over the prescription and asked.

When his gaze fell on Pei Huaian standing beside them, not only did his eyes flicker evasively, but his hands in front of him were rubbing together back and forth as though he was in a bit of a hurried panic.

“Hmm…” Shao He carefully reviewed the prescription and observed it closely before speaking, “This medicine is for treating colds, but the dosages are all a bit off. If you use the doses you’ve prescribed, it will lead to ineffective results.”

Upon hearing this, Zhao Yuebei’s brows furrowed, listening intently. He knew his medical skills were lacking, and he dared not prescribe too large a dosage for fear of harming someone.

“Thank you, Doctor Shao.” Zhao Yuebei understood her point and remembered the correct amount of each dosage.

Feeling the icy gaze sizing him up, Zhao Yuebei nervously swallowed, not daring to raise his head and look at the person beside him.

Shao He sensed something amiss between them, especially since she felt that Zhao Yuebei seemed to be somewhat daunted by Pei Huaian, something that had never happened before.

“What’s going on between you two?” Shao He’s big eyes kept shifting back and forth between the two, her tone revealing curiosity.

“Whatever is Doctor Shao talking about? I can’t understand a word,” Zhao Yuebei feigned ignorance.

Pei Huaian also followed up perfunctorily, “Don’t forget, you have to go to Pei Siyang’s place tomorrow. I will come to pick you up.”

Seizing the opportunity, Zhao Yuebei returned to the front hall, while Shao He watched his departing figure, feeling that there was some issue between them but didn’t think much about it.

When she got home that evening, she suddenly discovered that Xiao Linzhang was very excited today, even going to bed much later than usual.

The sound of drip-drip-drip came from outside, and Shao He glanced at the weather, which seemed to have been gloomy with endless rain recently.

Early in the morning, the sunlight was charming and bright, and a night’s rain made the air feel fresh and crisp.

In the Eldest Prince’s Mansion, Pei Siyang slightly lifted his gaze, which fell on the medicine bowl by the table, a fleeting cold gleam passing through the depths of his eyes, as he picked up the bowl and emptied its contents.

He carelessly smashed the bowl in front of the maidservant, saying irritably, “How many times must I say it? Don’t bring me medicine to drink anymore. What’s the use of drinking this stuff!”

The maidservant, terror-stricken, knelt down and replied, “Forgive me, Crown Prince. This is the tonic the Empress ordered this servant to give you.”

“Are you a person from the Empress’s side or from the Prince’s Residence? Since you are so keen on being by the Empress’s side, I’ll send you to her,” Pei Siyang roared at the maidservant.

His heart was pounding non-stop, and the irritating feeling made him sweep all the teacups on the table to the floor.

“Prince, spare my life, please!” the little maidservant knelt and cried for mercy.

Looking at the maidservant’s tear-stained face, Pei Siyang felt even more foul-tempered and scolded, “Worthless, get out!”

“Yes,” the little maidservant trembled as she left and carefully closed the door behind her.

The room plunged back into darkness, and the windows on both sides had all been nailed shut, blocking any sunlight from outside. The only source of any light was the door.

The room gave an oppressive feeling, as if one couldn’t catch a breath.

He took a deep breath, trying to calm his emotions, and looked at his disabled legs, revealing a bitter smile. What was the meaning of living like this?

Pei Siyang closed his eyes, feeling everything in the darkness, as if nothing could interest him anymore.

At that moment, a knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. Pei Siyang opened the door and saw the visitor, coldly saying, “You’re here.”

“Yes,” Pei Huaian saw the broken porcelain on the ground and knew he must have lost his temper again. He turned and called a maidservant to tidy up the room.

Shao He followed into the room, and the sudden gloom made her struggle to acclimate, accidentally bumping into a stool and nearly falling, but a large hand timely stabilized her.

Pei Huaian asked with concern, “Are you alright?”

“No, no problem…” Shao He quickly waved her hand, straightening herself.

Pei Huaian let go and said with a hint of reproach, “Be more careful when walking.”

Hearing Pei Huaian’s concern, Shao He was momentarily stunned, then nodded. She asked in a low voice, “Why did you seal all the windows around here?”

Pei Huaian sighed lightly and said, “Because my older brother dislikes the sunlight coming in, he ordered all the windows be sealed shut. And he forbade anyone in the mansion from making noise or causing trouble, otherwise they would be expelled.”

Shao He nodded, glancing around the simple layout of the room, where even the desk lacked books, writing materials, and paper, and the whole mansion felt deathly still.

While taking Pei Siyang’s pulse, she discovered his apathy towards everything, which furrowed her brows.

“Crown Prince, aren’t you curious about how I’m going to get you standing again?” Shao He couldn’t help but ask.

“What’s there to be curious about,” Pei Siyang replied in a tone of despair. Although he agreed to see a doctor, he held no hope.

Shao He realized his apathy towards everything was likely due to his disability, leading to depressive tendencies.

After examining him and finding no problems, she stood up and said, “I’ll send the items over tomorrow.”

As she was leaving, Shao He couldn’t restrain herself from saying, “Actually, the illness in your heart is the most important.”

Pei Siyang looked up at her a little longer but said nothing more, closing the door again, sealing himself in the darkness.
