Chapter 955: Chapter 955: This is a Deadly Problem

Alfred Scott shrunk back slightly after speaking, "Then, sis, you two should head out early and return early."

Mary Scott finally slowly withdrew her gaze.

David Locke walked toward the car with Mary Scott pushing him. Just before Alfred closed the door, David suddenly asked, "I forgot to ask you last night—since Alfred isn’t the man you love most, then who is?"

"Huh?" Mary Scott couldn’t grasp why David Locke would ask her something so random and stared at him in confusion.

Alfred, still standing behind them, immediately perked up his ears.

David Locke saw Mary Scott’s confusion and turned around, shooting her a warning glare that seemed to say that if she dared to give an answer outside his expectations, he’d immediately give her another round of trouble.

Mary Scott was speechless and could only reluctantly nod, "It’s you, okay?"

Satisfied, David Locke turned to glance smugly at Alfred Scott, his expression an obvious flaunt.

Alfred Scott: "..." Fuck, what a scheming guy!

Mary Scott also caught on: "..." Childish bastard!

At the hospital, it was Doctor Felix who attended to David Locke.

After completing a series of examinations, Doctor Felix glanced at Mary Scott and then focused his gaze on David Locke, "The issue isn’t serious, but if you keep overexerting yourself, it might not stay that way."

Mary Scott stood to the side, and even though the doctor was clearly addressing David Locke, her cheeks uncontrollably flushed as scenes from the previous night replayed in her mind. Feeling guilty, she lowered her head.

Once Doctor Felix left, David Locke tilted his head to observe Mary Scott, amused. "Why are you blushing?"

"I... I’m not blushing! It’s just that the hospital’s heating is way too high." As she spoke, Mary Scott waved her hand as if actually flushed from the heat.

David Locke gazed at her act that clearly betrayed her guilt, the smile at the corners of his lips deepening. He reached out to her.

Mary Scott bent down, puzzled, only to hear David Locke whisper close to her ear, "Don’t feel guilty. Doctor Felix is single and has never dated—it’s not like he’s thinking what you’re thinking."

"Cough, cough, cough..." Caught off guard, Mary Scott choked on her own saliva, coughing to the point her eyes turned red. She glared at David Locke angrily, "I wasn’t!"

"Oh." David Locke responded lazily, clearly unimpressed by her feeble defense.

Mary Scott was infuriated, her doe-like eyes glaring at him unhappily.

David Locke, seeing her expression, felt his heart melt. His teasing tone softened, and he said seriously, "You’re right; Moll was correct. It’s not you blushing—it’s the heating here. Honestly, this hospital’s ludicrous. Cranking up the heat this high—trying to roast the patients, are they?"

Mary Scott: "..."

How could this man’s lies sound so half-baked yet still manage to make her kind of happy?

"Can we go home now?" David Locke saw her standing there distracted and reached out to hold her hand, asking softly.

Mary Scott snapped out of it and realized he was casually playing with her hand. Instantly, memories of where his large hands had roamed last night flooded her mind, causing her cheeks to burn even hotter. She pulled her hand back, awkwardly avoiding the topic, "Aren’t you going to get treated? Didn’t the doctor say if you don’t take care of yourself, there could be long-term complications?"

David Locke, hearing her words, looked intently at her.

Mary Scott felt uneasy under his gaze, and her mind cleared. She remembered that the doctor had already taken care of his injuries and advised him to go home and rest.

For a moment, Mary Scott stood there, painfully embarrassed by her distracted state and wandering thoughts. She totally resented herself for losing her focus like this.

David Locke, afraid of upsetting her, stifled his smile. "Let’s go home."

But his suppressed amusement made Mary Scott feel even more awkward. She hastily walked toward the exit, wanting no part of him; however, in her rush, she bumped into someone at the door. The other person yelped, and Mary Scott quickly apologized.

But before she could finish her apology, Mary Scott felt an unsettling, piercing gaze land on her. It made her whole body tense up uncomfortably. She looked up at the person she bumped into. The other woman was draped in a luxurious fur coat, wearing a Burberry scarf that partially concealed her face. Oversized sunglasses sat on her nose, and a fisherman hat obscured her features even further. An almost faceless figure... Did she know this person?

Mary Scott’s puzzled expression instantly infuriated the woman. "Mary Scott, you’re utterly vicious!"

As soon as the voice sounded, the confusion vanished from Mary Scott’s eyes, replaced by genuine exasperation. She truly experienced the meaning of "enemies always meet."

Forcing a fake smile, Mary Scott looked at the fully armored Charlotte Leigh. "Thanks for the compliment."

Charlotte Leigh was no stranger to losing out to Mary Scott. Hearing this so-called thank-you, Charlotte’s breath caught mid-sentence. Was she actually complimenting her? Get some dignity!

"Only someone as shameless as you would take being called vicious as praise!" Charlotte said venomously. She hadn’t expected to run into Mary Scott at the hospital today, and the fresh animosity stacked atop longstanding grudges made her lose control.

"Oh, is that so?" Mary Scott pretended not to notice the hatred in her words. Despite her recent busy schedule, she hadn’t missed Charlotte’s "exciting" news headlines. Coupled with Jocelyn Spencer’s call from Starlight Entertainment, she knew Charlotte had been abandoned by the company. Over the years at Starlight Entertainment, Charlotte had done plenty to make things tough for Mary. Seeing her like this didn’t evoke a sense of vengeance-fueled satisfaction; instead, Mary felt a sense of pity.

She had spent four years navigating the entertainment industry, becoming familiar with both the glittering front and grimy underbelly of the circle. She had long since come to terms with the challenges she’d faced when starting out—they weren’t anything extraordinary. If she refused to give in to the company’s unspoken rules, there would always be someone else like Charlotte Leigh to make things difficult for her. What Mary couldn’t understand, however, was why Charlotte Leigh, who had initially come out on top, seemed to harbor such genuine, deep-seated hatred against her. This time she even partnered with Duke Blue to try to end Mary’s life?!

"You..." Charlotte Leigh was pushed over the edge by Mary Scott’s condescending attitude. She raised her hand, aiming a slap squarely at Mary’s face.

But Mary Scott was no longer the timid version of herself who had returned to the country four years ago. With a swift move, she grasped Charlotte’s wrist and, with a skillful counter, made Charlotte slap herself instead.

Mary Scott’s grip wasn’t weak. She applied just the right amount of leverage, ensuring that Charlotte’s slap landed with full force on her own face. The sunglasses were knocked askew, and her meticulously manicured nails left scratches on her cheek. Charlotte stared at Mary in disbelief as if she couldn’t fathom that Mary would dare retaliate like this.

After delivering the blow, Mary Scott released Charlotte’s wrist and turned toward the man in the wheelchair who was enjoying the scene. "Tissues."

The moment she spoke, David Locke had already handed her a wet wipe. Mary carefully rubbed her hand clean after touching Charlotte Leigh, then handed the dirty tissue back to him.

David Locke, like a loyal servant, took it, folded it neatly, and threw it into the designated trash bin.

Charlotte Leigh, who had witnessed the entire process, was stunned. She couldn’t decide whether to be outraged over Mary’s humiliating tissue-cleaning gesture or shocked by David Locke’s attitude toward Mary...

Charlotte had always believed that David Locke didn’t have feelings for Mary Scott. Their unexpected marriage was, to her, just dumb luck on Mary’s part—capitalizing on being David’s first love and showing up at the right moment. She assumed Brandon’s scandal was the catalyst and that marrying Mary provided David a convenient distraction.

When rumors of their divorce flooded the web, Charlotte felt even more vindicated in her assumption. That prompted her to get Duke Blue to go after Mary, sabotage her career trajectory, and ultimately make her someone David Locke would discard entirely. Even after Duke ran into trouble and "Wilderness" co-stars covertly worked to clear Mary and David’s name, proving the two actually loved one another, Charlotte still believed it was all Mary’s machinations behind the scenes. She couldn’t have imagined the reality could be so different.

Judging by David Locke’s demeanor toward Mary just now, he wasn’t at the level of a "bootlicker," but he certainly wasn’t indifferent either.

Charlotte couldn’t figure it out. Her gaze toward Mary became tinged with envy and resentment. Why, as women, did Mary Scott, whose conditions were far inferior to hers, always seem to be blessed with fortune? Just like back then!

At the thought of the past, the hatred in Charlotte Leigh’s eyes intensified. If not for what happened back then, her career wouldn’t have sunk into the mud. She wouldn’t have been destroyed.

She was also certain it was Mary Scott who orchestrated the revelations about her past. Emotions flitted across Charlotte’s face, but they eventually settled into cold calculation. "Mary Scott, do you know what disgusts me most about you? You’re filthy as hell but act all high and mighty. What was that just now? Showing off David Locke’s affection for you? Tsk tsk, turns out you’re just another woman who uses men as tools. I know all those media releases were his handiwork. But honestly, do you think men like him are truly loyal? He might love you now, but what about the future?"

Charlotte spat out the last line with venom, her tone manic with fury. Mary Scott, however, was distracted by Charlotte’s mention that the media coverage had been arranged by David Locke. When Charlotte’s scandals first surfaced, Mary had entertained the possibility but found herself too busy to investigate further. Hearing it confirmed now stirred a quiet warmth in her—David, who seemed so detached on the surface, had been secretly protecting her all along.

Unbeknownst to Charlotte, her warning fell on distracted ears. Mary had completely overlooked her final words because, honestly, who could predict the future?

Charlotte originally aimed to caution Mary but realized her words had only made an impact on her rival’s emotions—leaving Mary touched instead of alarmed. This drove Charlotte into a rage; she almost wanted to claw at Mary’s face but stopped herself in favor of sticking to her plan. Rubbing her swollen cheek, she spat a cold threat at Mary, "Let’s see how long you stay smug."

With that, Charlotte cast a meaningful look at Mary before turning to leave.

Mary Scott watched her retreating figure, her brow furrowing slightly. At that moment, David Locke returned from throwing out the trash and followed Mary’s gaze. "She probably has something planned against you."

"I know," Mary Scott lowly murmured. "With Charlotte Leigh’s personality, after suffering such a huge loss—losing her most prized career—not going for a final confrontation already shows she’s calm and calculating."

David Locke frowned and warned her sincerely, "You’re not worried? Don’t forget what happened at West Mountain last time."

"Don’t worry; I’ll be careful," Mary replied briefly but then suddenly remembered Charlotte’s earlier comment. "Was it you who got her scandals exposed?"

David Locke hadn’t expected her to ask and cleared his throat awkwardly, "Uh... I..."

"Thank you." Afraid David Locke would misunderstand her as being upset about his interference, Mary cut him off softly with gratitude.

Her thanks caught David Locke completely off guard. "Hmm?"

"Relax, I’m not someone who won’t recognize kindness. You did it for me, so why would I blame you? Besides, I find her unbearable—having to stay in the same industry always being targeted. Even the most forgiving person would start to feel annoyed, especially when her actions go far beyond simple targeting," Mary said gently, her eyes sparkling as she looked at him.

David Locke couldn’t handle her looking at him like that, his voice growing low in warning, "Don’t look at me like that."

Mary blinked, confused. "Why?"

"Because it makes me want to... lose control," David murmured deeply.

Mary Scott: "..." What on earth was this man thinking all day long?

Mary had no idea that her own thoughts before this weren’t exactly pure either.

"Anyway, hey, I just realized—why didn’t I think to ask Charlotte what she was doing at the hospital?" To turn the conversation away from its current trajectory, Mary awkwardly changed the subject.

David Locke cast her a cold glance. "As if she’d tell you if you asked."

His blunt response left Mary a little embarrassed but also irritated. She shot him an annoyed look, only for him to add, "If you want to know, I can have someone look into it."

"No need for that," Mary said quickly. Despite her reconciliation with David Locke, she still felt reluctant to always rely on him for everything.

But David ignored her, typing a text message on his phone and then taking her hand. "Charlotte suffered a massive loss this time. With her vengeful nature, she won’t let it slide. Knowing more about her situation might help in defending yourself."

Mary understood his logic and didn’t protest further.

After leaving the hospital and getting into the car, it wasn’t long before David received a reply. Reading the message, his brows furrowed slightly. Curious, Mary leaned closer. "What is it?"

"She went to OB-GYN." David handed his phone to her.

Reading the message, Mary’s expression turned odd. "She’s pregnant? Whose child?"

David Locke shot her a look as if saying, "How would I know?"

Realizing her mistake, Mary smiled sheepishly and speculated aloud, "This could actually be good news. With Charlotte pregnant, she shouldn’t have much energy left to come after me."

"Don’t be so sure," David disagreed with her optimistic view.

Mary argued, "She didn’t say she wanted to terminate the pregnancy, which suggests she plans to keep it. Given her current situation, how could she still have time and energy to target me? Let’s not worry so much."

David didn’t respond but reached out to ruffle her hair. In his experience, he’d seen the industry’s ruthlessness firsthand—pregnancy might not deter Charlotte from pursuing some ulterior motive. He chose to keep his thoughts to himself, though, instead thinking of something else. Last night’s wild acts between him and Mary had still ended with precautions taken. Listening to news of another’s pregnancy now got him wondering... what if Mary were to be pregnant?

David’s gaze unconsciously drifted to Mary’s stomach. When would this silly woman carry his child?
