Chapter 101: A shadow he saw

Amelia walked to her room and sat on the bed once she was done with her evening walk.

"So, how was your day today?" Cyrus initiated the conversation once he saw her.

Amelia furrowed her brows.

Was it just her, or did the King seem too intrigued by her day today?

"It was okay, why?" She asked.

Cyrus shook his head. He didn’t know how to approach the matter. He wanted to ask her if there was a time when she was extremely horny during the afternoon because it had affected his meeting too.

Sylas laughed at his condition.

"What are you hesitating for? Go ahead, ask the question. Were you horny, my wife? Because I don’t know about you, I was too horny," Sylas mocked Cyrus and the latter glared at his wolf.

"Nothing. You just looked extra tired today," Cyrus said, deciding to give up on the matter.

Amelia felt her heart warm at his thoughtfulness.

"Thank you," She whispered.

Cyrus, about to stand from the couch with the file and walk out to work, looked at her.

Her eyes twinkled like little stars as she looked at him with an unadulterated expression, and his heart clenched in his chest.

He hated how she was making him feel, but he didn’t want to disappoint her by acting uselessly tough around her.

"For what?" He asked.

Amelia shrugged her shoulders.

"For caring." Her words made Cyrus realize that, like him, she had never received parental love or support.

She was as lonely as he was in this world.

Everything he found about her, her desperation for love, and the reason why she turned to Killian... everything he read in those files started flashing before his eyes.

"I need to work hard for the King trials," he said, almost as if he was giving an excuse to himself, a coaxing statement to snap out of this situation and go to work.

But he couldn’t.

No matter how much he tried, he couldn’t move.

"I know. Go ahead," Amelia said.

He sighed after some time.

"I’ll leave once you sleep," He said.

Amelia didn’t understand his weird statement until he walked to her and picked her up bridal style.

As if nature was with them, a thunder echoed and made her flinch. She clenched her fist on his shirt.

"Would you like to come to the terrace with me?" Cyrus asked, and she nodded.

Cyrus walked out of the door and chose the back stairs to the terrace rather than using the front ones, not wanting anyone to see their princess.

Once on the terrace, Amelia thought he would put her down, but he didn’t.

He sat on one of the chairs, with her still in his arms, now resting on his lap.

He pulled her head to his chest, caressing her hair like a doting husband.

Amelia wanted to tell him that he didn’t need to waste his time with her, but at the same time, she wanted to act selfish for once. Thus, she didn’t say anything and just closed her eyes, wanting to enjoy the cold winds wrapped in the warm embrace of her husband.

She felt protected. The same thunder and rain she hated because the sound used to scare her, suddenly started feeling romantic and comforting in his arms.

After hearing Amelia’s soft breathing, Cyrus knew that the girl had fallen asleep and sighed.

He looked at the girl, tucking her hair behind her ears, before he bent and kissed her forehead.

"I don’t know what you have gone through or what kind of pain it was living in that kind of fake family, but I promise you I will respect that mark with my last breath," Cyrus said.

He sat there, asking Fabian to bring his laptop to the terrace.

Since he was sitting under the shade, he didn’t need to worry about getting wet, so he could work there, too.

"Sir, we have found something that you–" Fabian stopped talking when he saw the scene before him.

Cyrus raised his head and put a finger to his lips to tell his subordinate that he should speak whatever he wanted through the mind link so they wouldn’t wake up their princess.

Fabian understood the signal and even stopped Trevor and Gregory from coming to the terrace, where they wanted to discuss a few things with their King.

"Sir, we found a little bit more about the vampire Sparrow had seen near the Sin Banned pack," Fabian said through the mind link.

"What is it?" Cyrus asked.

Fabian sighed and walked to them, ensuring his gaze didn’t drift to the princess even for a second.

"It’s not just one vampire, sir. Around three more vampires have been reported in the area. Many hospitals are reporting missing blood bags. According to what we have found, they are looking for someone," Fabian said.

His words made Cyrus even more confused.

Not planning any attack or ambush, but looking for someone? And that to be in the werewolf Kingdom? Who was this person that was so important to the vampires that they’ve been looking for them here?

"Looking for whom?" Cyrus asked.

"A man," Fabian said.

"What kind of man?" Cyrus asked, irritated that Fabian wasn’t answering everything in a single go.

"We don’t know that yet. They have been looking for a man, we don’t know what he looks like or any specifications. However, they have been heard talking about some kind of destination," Fabian said.

A destination? What kind of destination? And was it going to affect the werewolves?

If not, why would these people act sneaky and not seek permission to search for that man?

Was there something that these people knew and he didn’t know?

Cyrus pressed his lips into a thin line.

"Around three vampires have been roaming around and asking for a man, yet our people can’t find them? Is this some kind of joke? With King Trials announced like this, do you think we can afford that mistake?" Cyrus asked.

Fabian looked at his foot, apologetic.

He assured Cyrus that they have been looking into the matter.

Fabian left shortly.

As Cyrus was caressing Amelia’s head, he suddenly felt someone’s gaze on him and turned to look into the dark and deep forest.

He saw someone. He knew someone was there.

However, he looked straight in that direction rather than panicking or calling the guards.

Kyle, observing all the interactions through the binoculars from quite a distance, smirked when Cyrus started looking at him.

"He has sharp senses. I have to give that," Kyle murmured.

He looked at the girl who was sleeping peacefully in Cyrus’s arms and remembered the kind of disgusted expression she had even when her body wanted him.

He chuckled at it.

Her heart wanted him, too. The only thing stopping her was her conscience. And he needed to do something about it.

Would finding Cyrus alone and asking him if he was ready to share his wife with her suffice?

No. The kind of alpha king he was, he wouldn’t agree to it.

Besides, he didn’t want to comfort the man for some reason. Just looking at him made his heart clench, like he wanted to pity him, and that was the reason he never tried anything against him, even when other rogues urged him to do so.

After all, he has the strongest army of rogues working for him.

"Hmm, there has to be a way. It’s not like I can stay away from Amelia. If she agrees, I am ready to keep her for the day, and he can keep her for the night. But if I mentioned that, she would get angry and slap me. Uhhh... why is this so complicated?!" Kyle pulled his hair in frustration before he sighed and jumped down from the tree.

Cyrus kept looking in the same direction until he felt no one was there anymore.

It could be a tree moving or a shadow. That was what he wanted to tell himself, but it wasn’t true.

There was someone there.

He immediately contacted his team.

"The forest, I want someone to check it from now on. Find any loopholes, if there are any. Can anyone just come and go from there?" Cyrus asked Trevor.

Trevor, who was about to watch an anime, jerked when he received King’s order.

"No, sir. We check it from time to time. Did something happen? Should we go and check now?" Trevor asked.

Cyrus sighed and shook his head.

"Do it in the morning. Given how she has been getting attacked so frequently, I don’t want to take any chances with the princess around. That’s why I denied taking her to the Palace when Grandma showed up," Cyrus said.

He remembered how persistent his grandmother was about taking Amelia to the palace and keeping her there for some time.

He would’ve allowed that in usual times, but after what happened to the Lunar Ball, he didn’t want to do it anymore.

He looked at the girl in his arms, who was sleeping like a baby, and shook his head before doing his work on the laptop, his gaze flickering to the forest in between.
