Chapter 61: Chapter 61 Did I hurt you?

On hearing this, Si Chen looked at Tong Yao calmly and nodded, "If you enjoy doing it, then continue. Don’t overexert yourself, and stop if your health suffers."

Seeing his faith in her words, Tong Yao sighed with relief, "I’m not exactly overworked, as long as you don’t mind me neglecting the house." ƒrēenovelkiss.com

Although they were nominally husband and wife, since their marriage, Si Chen had contributed more to the family. Over time, even the best of temperaments could start to grumble.

After all, being a doctor is a gruelling profession. Performing major surgeries could take several hours, she wondered when he managed to develop his abdominal muscles.

Si Chen pressed his lips together, "No, I won’t."

Tong Yao was born into a well-off family, was beautiful, and cultured. Under these circumstances, she could have closed her eyes in Kyoto and found a better match than his own family status. Her marriage to him was a downgrade, and she had been wronged.

After moving to the family quarters, she never complained about his poverty, so why would he nitpick about household chores?

Both were working, and Tong Yao was a woman. He should be the one doing more of the caretaking.

"If you say so, I’m hungry. Let’s cook together!" Tong Yao was so hungry that her stomach wouldn’t stop rumbling. The two had grown more comfortable around each other, so she wasn’t as reserved in Si Chen’s presence. Like a child, she playfully pushed Si Chen towards the kitchen.

Tong Yao was in charge of washing the vegetables while Si Chen took care of the cutting and frying. They worked together seamlessly, and soon the aroma of cooking food filled the kitchen, intensifying Tong Yao’s hunger. She stood behind Si Chen, eyes focused on the Stir-fried Egg with Chili in the pan.

"I heard that the canteen at Yi Zhong School makes delicious Chili Scrambled Eggs," Si Chen suddenly mentioned out of the blue.

"Delicious, my foot!" Without a second thought, Tong Yao blurted out, "The canteen uncle likes to fry the eggs directly on the chili, if it’s not too salty then it’s too bland. The salt often doesn’t dissolve properly. Apparently, he’s a relative of a school leader, otherwise, he would have been fired long ago."

In this era, coarse salt was used and its grains were as big as rice grains. In large pot dishes, unevenly stirred salt can sometimes result in a mouthful of salt when eaten.

Tong Yao did not notice that as she spoke, the confusion in Si Chen’s eyes dissipated, and he chuckled, "After all these years, it seems the school still hasn’t changed the canteen lady."

Tong Yao feigned surprise, "Oh, so you were a student at Yi Zhong too?"

"Yes," Si Chen responded with a nod. Smoke was billowing from the pan, making his eyes squint a bit. This unintentional movement made Tong Yao’s heart skip a beat.

What a charmer, he managed to look appealing even while cooking, his aura was like coming off a walking hormone.

Once she was ensured that she had moral integrity and extraordinary self-restraint, otherwise, she would have thrown herself at Si Chen a long time ago.

Such a handsome face, bound to be successful in the future. Decades from now, there would probably be an army of keyboard warriors online calling her a fool for not taking advantage of such an opportunity.

In reality, there was no correlation between Tong Yao, possessing the purity of six senses, and the iconic beauty who remains untempted amid male company.

At night, she was as sleepy as a pig and fell asleep as soon as she hit the bed. Si Chen was also quite formal and never made any inappropriate moves on her. So the two of them tacitly pretended ignorance and became good roommates.

Oh, the guilt!

Noticing Tong Yao’s gaze, Si Chen turned his head and asked, "What are you looking at?"

Tong Yao snapped back to reality, and quickly responded with a forced laugh, "Nothing, I was just thinking that you’re a good student, no wonder you got accepted to Kyoto University."

No sooner had she spoken than Si Chen turned off the stove. The food was ready to be served, so she quickly grabbed her bowl and chopsticks and left the kitchen, the corners of her mouth curling into an almost imperceptible smile.

Well, well, Si Chen had been waiting for her here.

It’s a good thing she ate at Yi Zhong’s canteen every day, otherwise, she would have slipped up this time.

She had spent quite some time researching Yi Zhong in order to fend off any potential questioning from Si Chen. As for Si Chen having attended Yi Zhong, she had guessed that long ago.

Of course, those who get into Kyoto Medical University would have come from Yi Zhong.

Si Chen knew that Tong Yao liked spicy food, and seeing her arm pretty much healed, he didn’t skimp on the chili this time. Tong Yao was delighted with the meal, and she practically ate the entire plate of Stir-fried Egg with Chili.

After dinner, as usual, Si Chen cleaned up the dining area and kitchen. Tong Yao wasn’t idle either, she tidied up the room and neatly folded the clothes she had brought in from outside. By the time Si Chen went to take a shower with his change of clothes, she sat on the bed and quietly counted her money.

She got home early that day but made a good amount of money, a full seventy-five yuan. Business had been steady these past few days, with around seventy yuan coming in every day. At this rate, in just over half a month, she would be able to afford a refrigerator.

Lost in her thoughts, she was startled by the sound of a mosquito buzzing in her ear.

"Si Chen is back, Si Chen is back."

Tong Yao quickly hid her money and had barely finished when Si Chen entered the room. Pretending nonchalance, she held up a mirror, examining herself for a moment before muttering, "I’ve been getting quite tanned recently."

Glancing at herself again, she spoke with a hint of vanity, "Good thing my looks haven’t faltered."

Si Chen responded with a faint smile, "There’s no one downstairs, you can go take a shower now."

"Alright then!" Tong Yao put down her mirror and took a change of clothes from her suitcase. Accidentally, she knocked over the money hidden in the corner of her suitcase, scattering it all over the floor.

All of this money had been earned from selling milk tea and because it was mostly small change, she didn’t have time to exchange it for larger bills, and instead bundled it into rolls with rubber bands and stored it in a corner of her suitcase. Now, it was all rolling around on the floor for all to see.

Once she realised what had happened, Tong Yao quickly picked up the money and put it back in her suitcase. When she turned around, she saw Si Chen watching her with a questioning look. Feeling a bit guilty, she stuttered out an explanation, "Um... this is my personal stash of money."

She thought Si Chen would inquire about why it was all in small change, but he just calmly nodded and said, "Go take your shower now," before looking away.

Tong Yao: Gave me quite the scare.

Her arm was completely healed and Tong Yao wasn’t lazy either. After her shower, she washed her clothes and hung them out to dry. When she came back to the room, Si Chen was propped up against the headboard reading a book as usual.

This was his routine, always waiting for Tong Yao to return before sleeping. They spoke little and if not tired, both would flip through medical books. They didn’t have much to chat about, they were like an old married couple.

As usually, Tong Yao sat on the edge of the bed and casually took off her shoes before climbing into bed. For some reason, she was extra clumsy that day and accidentally bumped into Si Chen’s leg. Her hand slipped and she fell straight into his arms. It was their first time having physical contact up close, she was so close she could smell the faint scent of laundry detergent on his clothes. They usually lay apart when sleeping, but this sudden close proximity made her heart beat uncontrollably.

Si Chen seemed to want to help her but was unsure where to put his hands. In the end, he simply asked, "Are you okay?"

"I’m fine." Tong Yao hurriedly sat up, trying to muster a dry smile, "Did I press down on you?"

"No."

Si Chen shook his head.

An awkward silence suddenly shrouded the room.
