Chapter 703: Chapter 703 Returning Home For a Funeral 1

Tong Yao lightly chuckled, "This question, let Wenwen answer for you!"

Gu Hongwei nodded in agreement, sharing Tong Yao’s sentiment. This was Deng Wenwen’s private matter, whether or not she divulged it was entirely up to her.

Given that they were all familiar with each other, Wenwen didn’t feel shy, she straightforwardly said: "Zhou Lei was Brother Hongwei’s university classmate. He also worked at sister Yaoyao’s tea shop. I was secretly in love with him and almost became his girlfriend. We had a ambiguous relationship for some time. This time, during the blind date, he recognised me and asked me out for a meal tomorrow."

Upon hearing this, Guo Jinnian immediately replied, "This is good news, isn’t it? You were secretly in love with him before and since then, you haven’t been seeing anyone. Are you still harboring feelings for him? I think it’s fate that allows you to meet him again. I believe you two can give it a chance."

Someone must have thought highly enough of Zhou Lei to introduce him to Wenwen, meaning Zhou Lei must be doing pretty well for himself currently. Since both are single and Wenwen had a past affection for Zhou Lei, they could certainly try to date again.

Deng Wenwen huffed, "Why would I want to have anything to do with him? Back then, he switched to another girl who fit his social status better. Their relationship was very good. Why should I have to be with him now that he is struggling?"

Guo Jinnian got angry, "He turns out to be a fickle man, then you should never be with him. Did you refuse him directly?"

Deng Wenwen, seemingly embarrassed and struggling to reply, eventually said, "I wanted to refuse him, but then I thought I could initially use him to stop my parents from bothering me about blind dates. So, I didn’t refuse and decided to use him as my shield for a while."

As she said this, Deng Wenwen had a guilty look on her face. She was in a state of confusion and didn’t know what she was thinking, but in the heat of the moment, she accepted Zhou Lei’s invitation.

Guo Jinnian warned, "Wenwen, make sure you don’t get deceived by him. You must not accept a fickle man. What if you fall deep for him again?"

Deng Wenwen replied, "I didn’t tell him that I’m about to join Brother Hongwei’s company. I only told him that I’m unemployed right now. He didn’t seem to mind. I plan to test him for a while."

Initially, Zhou Lei chose not to date her since she didn’t go to college and couldn’t aid his advancements. Wenwen wondered whether Zhou Lei would agree to be with her now if she remained like before, unable to provide any assistance or even be a burden to him.

"It’s fine to test him out, but make sure you don’t take things to heart." Guo Jinnian once again cautioned.

Wenwen nodded, "Cousin, don’t worry! I have my heart set. I won’t be easily fooled."

Both Tong Yao and Gu Hongwei looked at each other, seemingly seeing through everything but remaining silent.

For all these years, Deng Wenwen had not been with anyone. They thought it was because she had not met a suitable one, but they realised only at that moment that she had Zhou Lei in her heart all along.

They didn’t know if their reencounter was right or wrong.

Seeing that the adults stopped talking, Tong Yue quietly tugged at Deng Wenwen’s fingertip, "Aunt Wenwen, can you take me to see what Zhou Lei looks like next time?"

Deng Wenwen bent down and flicked her nose, "Alright, I’ll bring you next time."

Then, she looked at Si Yang, "Yangyang, do you want to see him too?"

Si Yang shook his head, "I’m not as curious as Yueyue."

He didn’t understand why such a young girl would love gossip so much. Si Yang rarely gossiped with his classmates at school. He thought their talks were childish. However, Yueyue was on very good terms with her classmates.

She could effortlessly strike conversations with anyone. She talked incessantly all day without feeling tired, making her a true social butterfly.

Everyone was entertained by the conversations of the two children. Gu Hongwei got up and announced, "You’ve been sitting long enough, lie down and rest for a while."

Guo Jinnian obediently laid down as instructed without any retort. Seeing the hint, Deng Wenwen fixed her gaze on them, "What’s going on between you two?"

The usually thick-skinned Guo Jinnian was slightly embarrassed by that stare. Gu Hongwei spoke before she could respond.

"Jinnian and I are together. I was planning to confess to her after a busy period with a proper ceremony, but due to her sudden illness, there was no fitting opportunity. Even though it was abrupt, we are together now. However, I promise to put my heart and soul into planning the wedding."

Hearing that they just got together and they’re preparing for their wedding already, Deng Wenwen couldn’t hide her envy, "Cousin, you’re finally with Brother Hongwei. I was getting worried for you guys. If you had waited any longer, Miaomiao would have gotten married first."

Last night, Guo Miaomiao had called Deng Wenwen, so she already knew about Wenwen and Jiang Jun’s relationship.

"Of course, I’ll get married before Miaomiao does. Once I’m discharged from the hospital, let’s go house hunting together." Now that she and Gu Hongwei were finally together, she wouldn’t let him slip away.

Upon hearing that the wedding was on the horizon, both Guo Miaomiao and Deng Wenwen were thrilled. They chatted for a while in the ward before Cheng Feng drove Tong Yao and the others home.

On the way, he asked Tong Yao about Wang Chun’s current condition. After finding out which hospital Wang Chun’s mother was at, he didn’t say much else, but made up his mind.

When they reached the foot of the Tong family’s building, Cheng Feng left immediately. Watching Cheng Feng’s car disappear, Si Yang looked up at Tong Yao, "Mommy, I think Uncle Cheng wants to see Wang Auntie."

Before Tong Yao could reply, Tong Yue nodded and added, "I also noticed that. He must be thinking of getting married because he saw Uncle Gu and godmother are about to tie the knot."

Tong Yao, while holding both children by their hands, laughed, "Little youngsters with mature minds."

After they returned upstairs, Tong Yao received a call from Si Boyi. Lin Fengying had fallen from a building and was in critical condition. She was in the hospital and likely wouldn’t make it.

After hanging up the phone, Tong Yao called Si Chen. Si Chen, after a moment of silence on the phone, asked Tong Yao to prepare herself for their return home that night.

Tong Yaohui and Wen Yun looked stunned upon hearing the news. Tong Yaohui said, "I’ll arrange for a car. As soon as Xiaochen gets everything settled, we’ll head back. I didn’t expect this to happen so suddenly. Xiaochen must be feeling terrible. Try to console him more."

Tong Yao nodded. For the last five years, they hadn’t returned to Li City. Si Boyi had visited several times without bringing along Lin Fengying. Their old house had been renovated. Though it was in the countryside, Lin Fengying had been living a decent life.

Compared to others, she was quite lucky.

Tong Yao didn’t feel guilty about Lin Fengying. They hadn’t neglected anything that they should have provided her other than accompanying her.

As for not accompanying Lin Fengying, it was primarily due to her own actions. Now that she was dying, there was no point discussing it further. They just had to return for the funeral.
