Reborn: The Return of the Villainous Mr. Liu-Chapter 1090: Clashing days
The day of Junxi's celebration get-together was filled with a festive spirit. Liu Hai, being Liu Hai, had grabbed this occasion as the perfect excuse to start stuffing his stomach with food and only food.
"Hai! The celebration is in the evening! Why is your mouth already ballooned like a squirrel?"
"Gshsdjsj…"
"Speak clearly!"
Liu Hai swallowed the food with satisfaction. "It's a happy day today!"
"Everyday is a happy day for you!"
"Today is an extra happy day!" He defended himself.
"Pathetic," Jing sneered.
"I will be glad to eat your portion of the food unless you shut up!" He glared.
"I dare you to try!" He then saw Jun and Ai coming and his eyes brightened. "Look who is here!"
He zapped towards Ai at lightning speed and lost himself in his grand-niece's cuteness.
"Aish, she is just becoming cuter and cuter. My heart cannot handle it anymore," he sniffled.
Liu Hai joined in the sniffling. "She's looking more and more like her dashing great-grandpa!"
"You are the last person she would resemble," Jun threw him a dirty look.
"Why do you hate me so much!" He sobbed. "Chunhua, look at how he is treating my delicate heart!"
The great-grandmother wasn't interested in her husband's sob story but the little dumpling's cuteness. She tickled Junxi under her chin, making the angel's eyes shine brightly. The blatant ignorance struck Liu Hai's heart mercilessly.
He plopped on the chair with a huff and grabbed some chips from Jin's plate. A vein popped on his forehead but he held it in.
Today is a happy day. Today is a happy day, he reminded himself.
"Jini-boy, at least you make me happy."
"Ew. I don't want to make you happy," the scorn on his face was unmistakable.
"Why not!?" frёeωebɳovel.com
"You are already a needlessly happy man. Too much for anybody's peace of mind. You know what happens when we give you an inch?"
He innocently blinked. "I only grab that inch?"
"You fucking grab the entire cake," he added more disdain to his voice and distanced his plate from him.
He simply waved his hand in dismissal. "What I am asking is…" he leaned closer, "Will Alix be joining tonight?"
Jin immediately felt the gazes of the twins, who also shared his questioning look.
"Well…it will take her some time to get comfortable. I don't want to force her if she really doesn't want to."
Nian gasped. "Hey! Alix better come, pretty please! Or my dearest daughter will start a protest!"
"No kidding," Leina sweated. "You should see Aang and Taio. They follow her like ducklings everywhere! The kids would be very very displeased if she wouldn't be there."
Xing Bi gravely nodded. She then asked, "How about we talk to her?"
Leina was onboard with that idea but Jin wasn't.
"I would have agreed but Zhou Ai had already talked to her a few days ago. I want her to be there but I also don't want her to feel pressured into attending…" he rubbed the back of his neck and sighed.
Liu Hai pouted. "Should I just drag her anyway? She is just assuming it will be uncomfortable but how can that be when I will be there!"
"You be the farthest from her," he grimaced. "The concept of space and consent doesn't exist in your dictionary."
"How rude!"
"Whatever. You keep stuffing the chips. I'll take her breakfast for her."
—
Jin noiselessly opened the door and saw Alix hiding under the blanket again. At this point, he came to realize that she wasn't really a morning person. She would stay awake till late night reading books and wake up late in the morning.
"Hey."
He didn't hear a response, which was by far, her standard first response and that was to give no response.
"I have brought your breakfast."
No response.
"All things are your favorite."
By the third time, Alix would most probably slide down the blanket, revealing her squinted eyes but she didn't. Not this time. But she did respond.
"I'm not hungry."
Jin frowned, feeling something off about her voice. He kept the tray aside and sat beside her.
"Are you feeling sick?"
"No."
"Your voice sounds a little weak."
"I'm fine."
Jin didn't feel that same confidence. He tried to lift the blanket but was pushed away.
"I'm really fine. I just want to sleep more."
She was huddled inside like a hermit and her voice sounded more detached than earlier. Jin wondered what was wrong.
Maybe she is missing Uncle and Aunt Ren?
But then again, the Ren family was invited to today's get-together so reunion wasn't a problem even if Alix didn't come down.
Jin exited the room in deep thought. He couldn't shake off the feeling that something was wrong but how would he know if Alix didn't tell him?
"Jin."
He turned and found Jun standing behind at a distance. He slowly approached him with his hands in his pockets and a gaze that held somberness.
"Bro," he smiled and then held an awkward look. "Alix is…"
"You don't have to give that look. Actually…" he released a sigh and brushed his fingers through his hair. "I guess it was easy to forget in the festive atmosphere."
"Forget what?" He blinked, puzzled.
"When…Zhan Yahui had…" he left the words unsaid and continued, "I had arranged for her funeral. It was then that I got to know that today is actually…her mother's death anniversary."
Jin froze.
"I don't think it's because she feels uncomfortable with everyone that she chose not to come for the get-together," he pressed his lips. "It's my fault too for forgetting that. We shouldn't have organized it today. Now even if we cancel it, she will blame it on herself. Ai didn't want that, neither me."
Jin felt as if a bunch of thorny vines were clasping tightly around his neck, pricking him and bleeding him.
Jun patted his shoulder. "You should be with her today. She might not show it but she needs your company today more than any other day."
