Chapter 122: Vampire Reagent

The cold wind was fierce on the broken bridge of Seaside Road.

It was well into deep autumn, and the scorching temperatures of Hong Kong Island were not constant. The dim view could not penetrate the densely packed burlap sacks, and the rising dust rolled at the tip of her nose, leaving behind a trace of grey.

Xu Si sat quietly, suddenly feeling someone forcefully dragging her to another car. She struggled with all her might a couple of times, raising her hand to knock twice against the hard car door. KNOCK. KNOCK.

The next second, a black gun barrel was pressed against the small of her back.

"Miss Xu, don’t move carelessly. Be careful of an accidental discharge."

Xu Si’s rose-colored lips parted slightly, then she went completely limp, as if resigning herself to be taken away.

These dangerous individuals. They just loved to point guns at people’s heads.

...

A newly arrived Triad Society member, smoothing down his prickly crew cut, said, "Notify the Boss. We’ve found people from Organization X. The Big Sister-in-law has been kidnapped."

"Why not just go rescue her?"

The spiky-haired man tugged at his tie, his domineering gaze hidden behind sunglasses. "You’re too stupid. The Big Sister-in-law wants to find their base. Besides, the Boss would definitely prefer to save her himself."

...

The car drove for a long time, traversing many cramped and steep wild paths that nearly made Xu Si’s clear mind reel. A faint, strange medicinal odor permeated the car, mixing with a putrid stench and dust that clogged her lungs and nostrils.

The car finally made a sudden stop. Xu Si’s body lurched uncontrollably forward, her rounded forehead hitting the driver’s seat. She was then lifted from the shaky car and, in a blink, thrown onto a boat like a sack of rice. Occasionally, when the sea breeze lifted the edge of the burlap sack over her head, she could see her guards wearing shiny black leather shoes and holding long guns.

The pain in her back told her the gun she carried was still there. That gun was special; it had a tracking device she had installed, fearing it might get lost on Hong Kong Island or be stolen. She had always kept it hidden in the car.

Anshi can pinpoint my exact location. Members of the Triad Society are also following close behind. All things considered, this isn’t overly dangerous.

Because of the drug’s effects, she couldn’t speak, and the gloomy voices beside her had fallen silent. If not for the occasional sound of soft, shuffling footsteps, she would have thought the boat was empty.

Who knows how long the boat has been moving?

By the time they arrived, the sky had completely darkened. Even when the wind lifted a corner of the burlap sack, she couldn’t make out any scenery.

All I know is that I’ve been packaged up and taken away again.

She was thrown into a very spacious environment. Her skirt felt a bit damp, and a chilling coldness from the ground crept up her legs. Xu Si huddled in a corner.

Suddenly, someone roughly ripped the burlap sack from her face, speaking with a mocking intonation, "Miss Xu, just stay put here. When we need you, we’ll naturally let you out. And don’t even think about running. No one outside will let you leave. If you escape and lose your life, Fei Yi, that madman, will probably come looking for trouble."

After saying this, the iron bars slammed shut, and the figure disappeared with surprising speed, leaving her truly alone in the space.

HUFF.

Xu Si let out a light sigh. Her lustrous, peach-blossom eyes were coated with grime. As soon as she opened them, an instinctive pain and itchiness forced her to keep blinking, washing away the dust on her eyeballs with the tears that welled up.

After the tears had cleansed them, her gaze, still slightly hazy, lifted to survey her surroundings once again. It appeared to be some sort of solitary confinement cell within a building. All she could see were four tall concrete walls. Perhaps due to the dampness, they bore many twisted cracks. An electric light bulb rested against one wall, serving as the room’s only light source, and in a corner lay a row of rusty drains. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

Apart from that, there was nothing. Not even a window.

What kind of hellish place is this?

Xu Si looked around. Finding no imminent danger and still tightly bound, she simply averted her gaze and calmly leaned against the wall to rest.

It doesn’t matter what place this is. Someone will come to rescue me soon. I guessed these people went to great lengths to bring me here for a reason; they surely wouldn’t easily take my life. Before I was taken, I told Anshi that if the tracker started moving, he should lead the police to follow its signal to find me. Even if my gun was confiscated, at least the person who took it would be with me. Not completely assured, I also left clues for the Triad Society members to follow. It’s just a matter of who arrives first and when. As long as they arrive quickly enough to launch a night raid and disrupt their plans, then no one will be able to use me as bait to threaten Pei Zhen.

Xu Si had predicted that risking herself would come at a cost. After being injected with that strange reagent, she caught her breath for a moment, but her limbs remained weak and unresponsive. Her throat, already sore, was particularly parched, as if it were packed with water-absorbing sand, completely devoid of moisture. Trapped uncomfortably in the cramped corner, she did not panic, nor did she lose her rationality. She managed to force words through her dry throat, squeezing out brokenly, "Weren’t you... going to... tell me... COUGH COUGH COUGH... what Fei Yi’s lifesaving medication... is?"

"Damn, you scared me! I thought some ghostly experimental subject had gotten loose," a voice came from outside.

There were indeed people outside the door. They tossed in a flimsy piece of paper that fluttered down right in front of Xu Si.

"Miss Xu, you’d better not talk. Has your voice always been that grating? How tragic. Listening to you is sheer torture."

The scoundrels mocked her current raspy voice.

Xu Si’s lips twitched, her expression grim. She moved her fingers slightly, focusing her attention on the tiny script on the paper.

It seemed to be some kind of report, emblazoned with a glaring, bright red X. The title itself was eye-catching:

[Defective Product—Deity Reagent Experiment Record]

Continuing downward, there were blocks of tables marked with technical jargon.

Unintelligible.

Xu Si skimmed through it quickly, her gaze settling on the latter half, which recorded the side effects:

[1. Subject 0001, after injection of the reagent, exhibited peak mental force development, resulting in a propensity for violent and uncontrollable rage.]

[2. Intermittent poisoning will occur, with a craving to consume blood. Requires immediate intake of the antidote specially formulated by Organization X, or injection of freshly produced toxins from the Underground City to maintain clarity. Both the antidote and the toxin are addictive.]

[3. ...]

There was a long list of entries; it seemed there were as many side effects as there were Special Abilities granted.

In the final corner, there was a concluding title:

[The reagent is declared a failure and is to be immediately destroyed. The test subject is substandard but cannot be destroyed.]

After reading each point, Xu Si’s breathing became rapid and somewhat pained.

This wasn’t any God-making Reagent. This was a Devil-making Reagent! So... Pei Zhen can’t stay away from the Underground City for long. He needs the antidote. Otherwise, when the poisoning acts up... he’ll crave blood.

Xu Si blinked, as if there was still dust she hadn’t cleared from her eyes.

Another tear fell.
