Chapter 126: Your turn to protect me

The top of the wall seemed to have been blasted open, creating a gap.

Faint light filtered in. It stretched through the fog like ribbons, illuminating the cascading dust from the wall—a scene that was like an absurd yet beautiful miracle amidst the ruins.

Pei Zhen was half-kneeling, his hands shackled by thick iron chains. Yet, this didn’t stop him from bending low, curling her entire body seamlessly beneath his. His silver-white hair fanned out with the movement, covering his back—tattooed with demonic faces—and his clearly defined muscles. Together, these shielded her from the dust and falling tile fragments.

Xu Si was momentarily dazed.

She was forced to take shelter beneath his body.

Not a single speck of the swirling dust could reach her.

In truth, she wasn’t afraid and quietly opened her eyes.

She looked up through the net-like strands of his silver hair.

Another tile fragment swayed precariously, about to fall. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Her limpid eyes suddenly widened. With an effort, she reached out, wrapped an arm around Pei Zhen’s head, and used her bent forearm to shield him from the sharp tile fragment.

There was a sharp crack.

It struck her arm, turning the skin red but drawing no blood.

Pei Zhen’s gaze quivered. He looked up at her, his eyes silently asking why.

A beam of light illuminated Xu Si’s coolly captivating face. Like a spark igniting a wildfire, it highlighted her red lips and her mist-swirled eyes.

She noticed his gaze. For the first time, Xu Si gently stroked his silver hair before extricating herself with delicate movements, her expression the same as when they had first met.

"The smoke is too thick, so don’t talk. I’m not hurt," she said, her voice soft and clear, with a gentle resonance. "Azhen, you don’t be afraid either. I’ll watch out for you; no bricks or stones will hit you."

The gap in the wall widened, and more light began to seep into his gray eyes.

Speckles of light blurred his eyes.

He remained dazed for a long moment. His lips curled unwittingly into a smile as he recklessly loosened his grip, pressing them against Xu Si’s cheek, frantically drinking in her scent.

"Good. Then it’s your turn to protect me, just like before."

Xu Si was taken aback.

Even in such a situation, he was still flirting.

She sighed softly and looked up again, wondering if he had calculated this perfectly, or if he truly possessed some kind of unseen eyes in his mind.

The tiles overhead had become remarkably stable; the pieces that had been teetering had already fallen.

No further danger seemed imminent.

...

Outside, the sounds of explosions were now mixed with gunshots. The cacophony continued unabated for a long time before gradually subsiding.

By the time Xu Si emerged from the confinement room again, the sky was already bright.

Her legs were weak from the drugs she had inhaled.

She could only be carried out in his arm once more, in that familiar, shameful position.

At times, Pei Zhen’s physical resilience was shockingly impressive.

Even while carrying her, with heavy metal chains still shackling his wrists, his steps remained as steady as ever.

Xu Si bit her lip and asked softly, "Aren’t you tired?"

Pei Zhen flexed his wrists and chuckled lightly. "I’m fine. Don’t move, or the chains might chafe you."

Outside the confinement room lay a pitch-black corridor.

She had no idea what had become of the people outside.

They walked a considerable distance down it, and still, no one jumped out to stop them.

However, as they neared a bend, Xu Si heard a third person’s breathing. She quickly scanned their surroundings and spotted a deeply hidden figure in a pitch-dark corner.

She tapped Pei Zhen’s shoulder. "There’s someone in the corner."

"Yes, there is." Pei Zhen tilted his head, his eyes veiled in shadow, his expression unreadable. "Still not coming out, Manager No. 26? Your entire territory is about to be razed by me."
