Chapter 80: A gift from Nathaniel
Zara turned, and her eyes landed on the vibrant red roses. A flicker of surprise mixed with disbelief passed over her face. It was the first time he had ever brought her flowers, though they weren’t her favorite.
Red roses had always been Nora’s favorite. She had loved them so much that nearly every vase in the house had been filled with them. Sometimes she had allowed Zara to place daisies around the house, but never without adding her signature roses to the arrangement.
As those memories stirred, Zara’s lips curved into a faint, unreadable smile.
Nathaniel’s heart sank a little, his smile fading. That wasn’t the reaction he had hoped for. He had imagined her smiling brightly, maybe thanking him. But instead, her response was subdued, almost distant.
"Don’t you like them?" he asked hesitantly, bracing himself for disappointment.
"I love them," she said softly, finally taking the bouquet from his hand. "Thank you."
Relief settled over Nathaniel, loosening the tension in his chest. "Wait, have something else for you."
Something else?
Zara blinked in surprise. She hadn’t expected more. Flowers alone had caught her off guard, but he had bought her a gift too! Her curiosity piqued. She was to find out what he had brought for her.
Nathaniel reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small jewelry box. With a flick, he opened it.
A pair of diamond studs peeked out from the box, sparkling under the light.
"This is for you," he said. "If you don’t like them... you can exchange them."
Zara stared at the earrings, still dazed. ’He really bought me a gift.’
Setting the bouquet on the table beside her, she took the box from his hand. "They are beautiful," she whispered, her mind caught between awe and disbelief.
"You like them?" he asked, watching her reaction closely.
A genuine smile bloomed across her face as she nodded. "Yes."
Nathaniel took out the studs from the box. "Let me put them on for you."
He stepped closer. His fingers brushed her earlobes as he fastened the earrings. The lightest touch of his fingers against her skin sent a current through her. She stood still, fingers unconsciously curling around the sides of her skirt.
His familiar cologne lingered in the space between them, almost intoxicating. He didn’t step back. Instead, his hand hovered near her cheek, his gaze locked on her as if searching for something. Then, gently, he tilted her chin upward, guiding her eyes to his.
Their gazes met, and a spark flew between them.
Zara gripped her skirt tighter, her pulse hammering in her chest, thoughts dissolving into a mess of flutters and nerves. When she felt his thumb brushing across her lips, she shuddered, a wave of sensation rushing through her.
All she could do was stand there, heart racing, as if the air around them had charged.
"It’s been a while," Nathaniel murmured hoarsely, his gaze darkening with unmistakable hunger. "I don’t think I can hold back any longer. And I don’t want to." He leaned in closer, his breath warm against her skin. "Can we..."
His lips brushed hers, tentative but aching with desire. He didn’t kiss her. Instead, he waited for a sign – maybe for her permission.
Zara didn’t move away, nor did she push him back. And that was all the signal he needed.
His mouth claimed hers in a kiss that was deep, desperate, and full of everything he had kept buried for all those days. He pushed her against the cold glass of the window, one hand cradling the back of her head while the other pressed at her lower back, holding her close.
He hadn’t realized just how much he had needed this until now. He poured every ache, every unspoken longing into the kiss.
Zara didn’t resist. She didn’t hesitate. Instead, she melted into him. Her lips moved against his with equal urgency, her arms sliding up his chest. The jewelry box slipped from her hand and hit the floor with a soft clatter.
He deepened the kiss, his hand traveling down to grip her waist as he tasted her, devoured her, his tongue slipping into her mouth with desperate intent.
"You smell like medicine," he breathed between kisses, tugging his tie loose and tossing it aside without breaking their connection.
Zara’s fingers found the buttons of his shirt, fumbling in her haste. She slipped her hands beneath the fabric, touching him, and let herself melt into his warmth. Her fingertips traced over the contours of his chest, feeling the thunderous rhythm of his heartbeat.
Her touch added to his burning desire. His control slipped further as heat flared through his body.
He pulled back slightly, his breathing ragged, eyes locked onto hers. He cupped her face, his thumbs stroking her cheeks. "I want you," he rasped. "Now."
Zara reached up and looped her arms around his neck, rising onto her toes to kiss him. She wasn’t holding back. Since she had decided to give this marriage a chance, she would try it seriously.
That single gesture thrilled him, and at the same time, aroused him.
He pulled her flush to his chest, hands exploring her back as their kiss turned more urgent, breathless, consumed by rising passion. Their breaths mingled, hearts pounding in sync.
His fingers slid beneath her top, tracing every curve, until they found the clasp of her bra. With one swift motion, he undid it, freeing her breasts.
His lips dragged to her neck, leaving warm, lingering kisses, while his thumbs brushed against her nipples, teasing her, making her surrender to him completely.
Zara arched into him, biting her lip to stifle the moan that threatened to escape. Her head tilted back, exposing the smooth column of her neck.
He didn’t ignore. He couldn’t. Just as he dipped his head to her chest, Zane’s voice shattered the moment.
"Mommy... Daddy?"
Everything came to a sudden, jarring halt.
Zara froze, her body tensing against his. Nathaniel pulled back instantly, still breathless and dazed. He turned toward the voice.
Zane stood at the doorway, stunned and speechless. His eyes were round as saucers, his little mouth parted in confusion. His presence was like a bucket of cold water poured over their heat.
Nathaniel’s heart dropped. His thoughts raced as he realized the door had been left wide open.
’Shit,’ he cursed under his breath. ’I should have locked the door.’
He cleared his throat, trying to sound composed. "Zane... what are you doing here?"
The boy fidgeted. "I was... bored. I came to find Mommy but..." He tilted his head slightly, his eyes flicking from Nathaniel to Zara. "Were you kissing Mommy?"
