Chapter 294: Renee’s Reason

Adam and Renee go back on the couch and take their seat.

Renee twists open the water bottle and takes a carefree drink, not minding the silence between her and Adam.

Adam waits patiently while he wonders what could have brought Renee here if not the kidnapping.

While thinking, he can hear Renee chug down the water with ease, her throat moving back and forth. Adam looks at her lips, soft, plump, without any lipstick pressed against the bottle’s mouth.

’She doesn’t pretend, does she...’ Adam thinks as Renee hasn’t put on any facade or a mask to portray herself as someone else; her every action is of her genuine self.

She is the type of woman who doesn’t care about what the world and its people think about her. A refreshing find for Adam, but nothing drastic enough to warrant his care.

After taking her sweet time with the water, Renee looks back at Adam again.

"So... Can you now tell me why you are here?" Adam asks again.

He is certain by now that this attempt to drag this silence is an attempt from Renee to put him under some kind of pressure, making him overthink about his situation and unnecessarily contradict himself.

Of course, Adam’s never going to fall for such simple tricks.

Since Renee wants to take her time, he is going to let her. He watches her slowly gulp the remaining of the water out of the bottle before placing it down on the coffee table with a relaxed sigh.

"Thanks for the water," She says, smiling with care.

"No problem, from the looks of it, you really needed that, huh?" Adam says, pointing at the way she drank that water.

"Well, it’s a tough job out there, catching criminals is one thing, but most of it is paper work, it’s exhausting, and then you have those criminals who cause havoc around the city, but since their crime is not severe we can’t even punish them properly," She says as she goes off on how hard and unforgiving her work is.

Adam listens to her patiently, and for some reason, his tone feels a little off to him, as if her words were directly aimed at him.

"I am sorry to hear that, but I am sure you can toughen it out," Adam says, not bothering to show any pity. After all, this is the job she chose to do. Why would he have any sympathy for someone who chose to do what they want? 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

If Renee’s gripes are real, then she will quit. Adam doesn’t owe her anything other than a stranger’s pity.

Hearing his words, Renee takes a look at him, surprised by his bluntness. After all, most people would show much more concern even if it’s fake.

"Ahem~" Clearing her throat, she meets Adam’s gaze, getting a little serious.

Noticing the shift in her, Adam also straightens his back a little, ready to listen.

"The reason why I am here is because of something you did," Renee says.

"Something I did? Is it about the kidnapping? Did I hit them too hard? Are they trying to sue me?" Adam asks, because that could be a possibility. After all, he didn’t go easy on those goons.

Some of them are permanently damaged for life because of him.

"No, it’s not related to that. In fact, I am very glad that you went as hard as you possibly could on them. Being police officers, who don’t have that luxury," Renee says.

’If only you knew,’ Adam thinks. He is not going to tell Renee that he could have gone way harder. Killing every one of them if he wanted to, but he held back because he was not ready to deal with the consequences of murder. Even if he was within his rights to do so to save Lana and others

"If it’s not that, then why are you here?" Adam asks.

"It’s because of this," Renee says, pulling out her phone and playing a video for Adam to watch.

It’s a dash cam footage of a black sports car sweeping through the traffic at incredible speed, while the car with the dash cam tries its hardest to keep up, only for it to lose the black car within a minute.

The video then shifts to a different perspective. A highway camera that is placed on top of the towers to keep an eye on traffic, it shows the black car maneuvering through the heavy traffic at high speed. A dangerous stunt to pull off. Something everyone will agree upon.

Seeing the video, Adam’s eyes widen a little while a small smirk forms on his face. He, of course, recognized the black car; it’s his. He was the one driving it while he had Isla with him.

"That was quite a scene. I must say, the driver is very skilled," Adam says, praising himself.

Renee takes a good look at Adam’s face, noticing that he doesn’t seem to be panicking. But this was expected by her. After all, this young man managed to take on a group of dangerous gangsters all alone; getting caught speeding is not going to intimidate him much.

"He indeed is. What do you think the minimum punishment for speeding and reckless driving is?" Renee asks.

"I don’t know, please enlighten me," Adam says, smiling.

"A thousand dollar fine, and one year of jail time," Renee says, smiling back.

"Wow, that’s... harsh," Adam says. He didn’t know this.

"Well, the city is very strict when it comes to the safety of its people," Renee says.

"So, what now?" Adam asks, as he leans in a little towards Renee, meeting her gaze, challenging her authority a little, poking at her for a reaction to see what she wants to do, but mainly to find out why she is here.

The given reason for her to come here was his little speeding and reckless driving, but Adam doesn’t believe it’s why she is here.

If the given reason was really the case, Renee herself wouldn’t come here as these matters are way below her paygrade. It would be a lower-ranking officer.

"I could arrest you," Renee says, not taking her eyes off Adam as she wants to see how he will react to her threat.

"But you won’t," Adam answers back.

Renee’s eyes flash with surprise as Adam calls her bluff.

"And why would you think I won’t arrest you?" She asks, reaching for her handcuffs.

Adam sees her actions and smirks before locking eyes with her again.

"Because you aren’t here for the reason you said you are. If you wanted me arrested for speeding, a lower-ranking officer would have been enough. There is no reason for someone like you to personally come, and that too, all alone without a partner.

I don’t think you ever intended to arrest me.

So, Officer Calder, I would like to know why you are really here?" Adam asks.

Hearing his explanation, the smile on Renee’s face grows.

"You are really smart for your age," She says.

"I don’t think you. I am just a little decent at reading my environment," Adam says, and he believes it to be true. After all, it’s a skill he developed to survive his previous life.

"And humble as well," She says. This time, Adam doesn’t say anything back.

"Well, since you already figured me out, let me be straight with you. I came here to ask for your help," Renee says.

This time it’s Adam’s turn to be surprised because how could he ever be of any help to Renee, it’s not like he has any connections of power in this city that Renee knows of.

"You want my help? With what?" Adam asks curiously.

"Well, as shown in the video, you are quite a skilled driver," Renee says.

"That I am," Adam says.

"But how good a driver are you, really?" She asks.

Adam’s curiosity piques, wondering why Renee is so interested in his driving skills.

"I am very, very good," Adam says, and he is not lying. Not because he has tons of experience, but because he is built differently.

His motor skills are better than any human’s, his perception of time is better than any human’s, his reflexes are better than any human’s, and his five senses are far more enhanced than any human’s, his brain can calculate distance, time, speed faster than any human, so of course, he is going to be better than any human when it comes to anything racing.

"That’s what I like to hear because you are going to help me take down a notorious criminal who organizes the biggest illegal racing in the city," Renee says.

Hearing her words, Adam’s head goes blank for a second.

"Wait... What?" Adam asks.

"You are going to enter illegal races that go around the city, win, figure out who the man behind it all is, and help me catch him," Renee says.

Hearing her words, Adam starts staring at Renee as if she’s gone mad.

’This was her plan?’ Adam asks, wondering if she hit her head on her way here. Because why would she trust him with such an important thing?

"Are you being serious?" Adam asks.

"As serious as I can get," Renee says.

"And you think involving me in this is the best way to do it?" Adam asks.

"I can’t think of a better idea," Renee says, smiling.

"This is crazy," Adam says.

"It’s the only way," Renee says.

Adam stares at Renee speechlessly. ’Why have the women in my life suddenly gotten a lot crazier?’ Adam wonders
