Regressor's Harem Of Vengeance-Chapter 47. Making Preparations.
Everyone lowered their heads and nodded in understanding as Elaine spoke.
They could feel the urgency in her words and they instinctively knew that the monsters heading their way might be unlike any other.
Besides, since Ray had been the one who observed the beasts’ movement, they knew it had to be true even though some had initially thought that it was impossible for a monster tide to appear at a time like this.
Ray’s reputation as a hardworking young farmer in the village had made almost everyone in the village respect him, but now that he had Awakened his abilities, they regarded him with even more respect than ever before.
And so, without further delay, Elaine instructed them on what to do.
She knew that there was no way to stop the monsters from attacking the village because there were too many of them, and the forest didn’t offer the villagers any form of barrier that could protect them from the stampede.
So the only thing they could do right now was to control where the monsters could enter, and to concentrate their defenses at those points.
"I need every able-bodied man who can hold a weapon to be focused on barricading the entrance points of the village. Everyone who can’t fight will stay within the village and focus on moving supplies and they should be prepared to tend to the wounded when the fight begins later tonight." Elaine explained as she assigned villagers to different sections of the village.
Some were stationed at the northern point of the village which had the main village road leading up to the forest path.
The Eastern, Western, and Southern parts were filled with fewer men who barricaded these joints.
And so, the work began.
Trees were felled and dragged to the northern part of the village. They were positioned as barricades and sharpened stakes were driven into the ground at different angles.
Ropes were stretched between posts at varying heights and simple trip hazards were constructed as well, to entrap charging creatures.
Despite having little amount of time to prepare, everyone worked really hard to protect their friends and families.
Ray worked hard as well, driving stakes, carrying timbers easily with his strength and positioning barriers where necessary.
Sweat soaked through his clothes despite it still being very early in the morning and the cold wind caressed his body.
Mira had finished doing what she was assigned to do in the Southern gate of the village, so she went over to Ray’s location, trying to help him. But upon arriving at the northern part of the village, she found that he was still hard at work, as though he had eaten some special mushrooms.
At that point, the men who were with him were all exhausted after carrying some pretty heavy stuff, so they had all gone to take a short break, leaving Ray alone to what he was doing.
Seeing this, Mira’s cow ears pressed back. She instantly walked closer and picked up a wooden stake before quickly driving it into the ground with her Tauren strength and force.
A man who had been trying to keep up with Ray, noticed Mira’s brute strength and involuntarily took a small step back lest his foot got pinned to the ground with that stake.
Ray noticed all these and smiled softly before resuming what he was doing.
By mid-day, the Northern part of the village had substantially become a waist-high fence with gaps deliberately left at controlled entry points for the best fighters to be stationed in.
The other sections of the village had also been reinforced with whatever materials were available to create a really good barricade.
Elaine moved between points and sections despite her age and strength.
She checked on the ongoing work, and gave instructions where necessary before stopping beside Ray at the northern barricade.
"I want the children and the elderly to be placed in the village center where my house and other stone construction buildings are. What do you think?"
Ray nodded in understanding because the houses at the center were a lot stronger and sturdier than other places, so he had advised Helen and Emma to go there as well the moment the sun began to set.
"What about healing potions?" Ray asked.
"We do not have much, I’m afraid. Some families already dropped theirs while others are pretending that they do not have. But even among those who sacrificed theirs for others, the potions aren’t really in the best state right now."
In other words, those potions had already lost their potency.
Despite how expensive healing potions were in his world, they really didn’t have a long shelf life due to the high level of impurities in them.
Creating a really pure healing potion had never been done before, so the low quality healing potions were what merchants sold to earn money.
Also, considering the fact that some families were quite reluctant to spare their healing potions for those who were fighting to protect them, Ray knew he would have to do his best not to get too injured in tonight’s battle.
"What about Grandma Derry?" Ray asked about a really popular granny in the village who was used to brewing some local herbs.
"She’s been busy all morning, trying to get as many herbs as possible. A few girls accompanied her already, so they should be back very soon."
Ray nodded in understanding before looking at the horizon.
He could understand why Elaine had been reluctant to spread the news about those who were reluctant to spare their healing potions.
If the farmers who had offered to fight for the village were to hear of this, they would most definitely stand down from protecting the village.
After all, they had families that needed protection just as much as those selfish individuals who weren’t thinking about the bigger picture.
Elaine had only decided to tell this to Ray as a way of letting him know that a good amount of the little available potions would be given to him because he was the only Awakened fighter in the village, and he would need all the support he could get to help them fight against the monsters.
