Chapter 7: The Old Baby Spider

A lot of spiders were around him like earlier, but this time, they had this specifically characteristic aura which Pebbles could never forget.

Ding!

[The system has detected a large amount of killing intent!]

[Killing intent detected!]

[Killing intent detected!]

[Killing intent...]

The notifications popped up nonstop, all while Pebbles could see a faint red glow on the spiders’ bodies.

Half of them had launched themselves directly at him. The rest were running and crawling towards him.

Pebbles didnt have a lot of time to react but had enough to do something.

Ding!

[You have used the skill Run.]

It barely increased his speed, but that was the pinnacle of what he could achieve at the moment.

The barrages of spiders came right at him, but all Pebbles did was a simple thing: run, jump, roll on the ground, jump, and run again.

It is not uncommon to dodge a barrage of arrows. A skilled swordsman can easily do that. A mage can put up a barrier and chill within it. A tank can simply take them head-on and remain unscathed.

What can a dragon do?

While not arrows, the Stone spiders were like blunt rocks that were thrown at Pebbles.

Thanks to the velocity gained by the threads, they possessed a great amount of destructive energy.

If Pebbles was to make even the slightest contact, he might end up severely injured or perhaps even die, considering the little HP he had.

That is precisely what he too was thinking at the moment, and hence he’d used everything he had up his sleeve.

Run it was. His eyes could barely follow the movements of the spiders, so he had to rely on sound.

In a cave such as this, and with how many they were, Pebbles couldnt help but struggle even at that.

So he haphazardly jumped.

Miracle!

He dodged the direct charge from one of the Stone spiders.

Pebbles didnt have the time to be happy or sad. Heck, he didnt even realize he’d dodged an attack.

All he could do was keep jumping and dance like a dancer threatened to die when their legs stop.

Pebbles’ breath was already in shambles. Very unsteady and too deep. The rhythm had long been lost.

Worse were his eyes, which could barely stay open. And finally, his tongue, which kept dropping out of his mouth.

Since his mouth remained open most of the time, he felt an immense dryness in his throat.

As air passed before entering his windpipe, the area became even drier.

Cough-

He’d even coughed twice, but had no more time to cough.

One gulp of saliva was all he had managed before numerous strikes seemingly fell frkm the sky.

Bam! Bam! Bam! Boom!

Rocks crumbled and blasted, becoming dust and sand that created a small dust cloud.

"Aaarghhhh!"

And amidst that echoed a scream of agony and pain.

The cloud of dust had barely settled, yet shadows of Pebbles staggering and rolling kn the ground were clearly visible to most, if not all.

The baby Stone spider, who had been on a high platform, had only watched this in complete disbelief and shock.

If anything, she thought that she was helping Pebbles.

But the situation that she’d caused only made her legs tremble.

All four of her eyes flickered, and drops of tears beaded down.

Her body quivered with slight movement, thinking she was the reason Pebbles was going to die.

"Stop!!!"

She screamed using all of her energy, but her voice reached none.

"You bwastards! Stop! You can’t be..."

She was scared and terrified.

...

I didnt know since when I’d been roaming the dungeon, trapped from escaping it and only finding stronger beasts as I tried to leave towards the entrance.

I never had any siblings. I’d only ever seen eggs and eggs alone, and that had been our food.

When I felt hungry, I noticed my race eating the eggs that had been laid by the female spiders. I did so too.

I’d been told stories about how new baby spiders would hatch and that I could become a sister someday, but the same eggs were now fed to thr bulky spiders!!!

Our numbers had greatly reduced since the start.

I’d heard my grandma say that at first, about 300 years ago, we occupied all ten floors of the dungeon.

Now, we’re left only on Floor 1, the lowest and weakest floor out of all.

I’d only seen my race die, and all the talks about being born were a lie!

The plants here had decreased. The seeds never germinated. No beings multiplied!

This made food scarce and survival a competition!

Only I knew how I’d survived this long! Despite living so long, for a hundred years, I was still a baby!

I hadn’t evolved. Hadn’t passed the adolescent stage and never grew bigger than a tiny Orp Fruit.

I was just a storyteller like my grandma, who had passed long ago.

When the red moon came and it was time for my evolution, I forced myself not to!

I had to remain young!

I believed evolution caused faster death by ageing, and my theory seemingly stood true up to date!

I was strong!

But... I still couldn’t bear to see the deaths of countless of my people, especially when none were being born.

It was called the Womb of Endings, and I finally knew what it exactly meant...

"A womb where only one ends. Nothing begins..."

I lived in fear.

Someday, I’d be hunted. If not, I’d be left alone, completely alone, in this lonely, desolate place, only to go extinct with none remaining to remember me... none remaining to mourn for my death...

I truly believed that...

Until...

The mysterious egg hatched, and a lizard walked out.

"A beginning was created in the ending..."

"And I can’t let him DIE LIKE THIS!" I screamed at the top of my lungs.

"STOPPPPPP YOU SWON OF BWITCHES!!!"

...

Ding!

[The baby spider has used the skill Aggro]
